First of all, Jeff and Ken, you guys are machines!   My volume through March is about 6:20/week - which I'm realizing is a lot for me.  Then it kicks up for the Steelhead HIM (Aug 4).  My Apr-Jul volume averages 7:40 per week, with max of 10:20.

I first thought that the swim would be my biggest challenge, but I'm making way better progress than expected.  Now, I'm concerned with my bike.  I'll have to set that trainer up soon.

Core strength will not be a problem, as we continue to get pounded with snow and I'm too cheap to buy a snow-blower.

 Jasugar - good news with your daughter.  Hope all continues well.  Also I hope to see you at Steelhead!

Thanks, though I wouldn't mind trading my body in for a newer model sometimes... And get that trainer going for sure -- remember, you'll be on your bike for around 3 hours during the 1/2-IM -- every bit of time you can get in the saddle is sure to pay off.

And happy for the good news from Jasugar, for sure!

Jasugar that is great news about your daughter. Hope everything works out for her and your family. Good Luck with your training too.

Thought I would bring up the topic of injuries today. I have been having pain in my thigh for the past week and have a doctor's appointment on Monday just to make sure it is nothing serious. How does everyone handle injuries and trianing, do you train through the pain and when do you decided to rest it and not work a specific discipline?

Ken, how is the increased training going too?

Injuries -- seems they get everybody sooner or later.

The smart thing to do is to err on the side of caution, or course. It would be better to lose a day or two of training than a week, month, or longer. The hard thing is knowing when to be cautious.

As a rule, I take time off if the problem is functional -- i.e., I can't run, swim, or bike properly because of it. Otherwise I just keep plugging away, and use ice or advil as necessary.

I had knee surgery 9 months ago, so I'm constantly keeping tabs on my knee -- trying to be sure it doesn't get overused or re-injured as I increase training. About once a month I start thinking that I've overdone it, but it's always come back stronger after my scheduled rest days.

As far as increased training volume -- that's been going well. I chalk that up to my coach. She seems to know how much to increase the load without breaking down the body. Knock on wood!

Veteran - thanks for your thoughts.

My training is ... going. Am aiming for 1 hr/day during the week, with longer on weekends, usually one day off per week. Today was a 2000 yd swim - which was a challenge, as I have been radically changing my stroke after spending 5 hrs in a total immersion workshop. I'm finding the front quadrant swimming not too hard, but getting a reasonable not-fighting-the-water kick in along with breathing is a challenge. Anyhow, I averaged 1:47 - 1:51/100 yds. Don't feel like the TI dolphin, that's for sure.

Re: injuries k- surprisingly - my injury "rate" has decreased dramatically once I started training for endurance events. Now, I'm not doing running - because of a hip replacement - so I avoid the high impact stuff, which makes a big difference (pretty hard to hurt yourself swimming laps - scept for rotator cuff stuff). BUT I've also focused on core strength and balance for the past 2-3 years, and I think it has really paid off. I was most aware of it about 2 yrs ago, while on a "service trip" to Costa Rica, where I shoveled MUD for about 5 - 6 hours/day on several days, and had no back or other muscle pain. Made me a true believer in core strengthening.

Advil/Ibuprofen can be a great friend, too.

February was rough for me. Fought a minor cold, and bummed out about the cold weather we've been having. Hope is returning however -- today I did a six mile run in the warm sun at sub 10 min/mile pace, I've got a day off tomorrow, and the weather forecast for my bike ride on Saturday is in the 50s.

February started out great, but ended with that chest cold which impacted some of my goals.  Overall, some positives:

  • dropped about two pounds
  • avg 6.6hrs/nt vs. Jan 6.2 hrs/nt of sleep
  • avg swim pace improved from 3:19 to 3:06 per 100m - less rest between laps
  • although total swimming fell from 14.9km to 10.8km, I did a 1000yd continuous freestyle swim
  • ran 41 miles in Feb compared to 28.5 in Jan
  • kept with the strength program from AA to MT phases
  • no Coke on weekends

For March I need to work on the following:

  • swim at least 3x per week - make some technique/efficiency gains
  • get trainer set-up and register time in the saddle
  • do more zone 1 running to build aerobic endurance - been rushing too much
  • get 7 hours of sleep per night consistently
  • stay injury-free through MS phase of strength training
  • do more abs/obliques work
  • see if I can drop Coke althoghter

February - well, it sort of sucked. mostly cuz of stress about my daughter's illness. She had surgery this week - is now at home hurting and healing (most hopefully)

This week was mostly off - did about 1000 yds yesterday in the pool - back on the bike today for an hour with 5 intervals at 200+ watts. Hoping to get back in swing next week.

I've sort of altered, with help, the TI approach to my swimming, focusing on body position, increasing the stroke rate. the changes have allowed me to pursue a 1:35 - 1:50 pace/100 yds.

Am hoping to run, just a bit, despite my hip - maybe just enough to finish a sprint or olympic tri - I did one oly tri last year. There's an indoor tri in about 3 weeks I hope to participate in.

Have worked, dietwise, to limit my animal product intake. In general, I feel better with LESS milk and meat. I don't seem to miss the animal protein - use a fair amount of soy stuff.... My weight is probably up a bit from all the nervous eating and decreased activity these past few weeks.

Veteran - enjoy! vacation mode is great - but can be even better with working out. Needless to say, here especially, sometimes our bodies just tell us to STOP for a day or two. Motivation for me always comes in a negative reinforcement kind of way - when I have more than a day or two off I just feel thick and sloggy. Always better as I return to activity.

MBMoran - Thanks for your thoughts about Leigh. And I hope to see/meet you at Steelhead, too. Boy, am I impressed with the progress you've made. A testament to your work.. The swimming improvements are especially impressive. Keep at it! I've been stuck around the same time for months now, would love to see a 10 second improvement in my time!

Weather's great here. Running a 10 mile road race on Saturday, then my first tri of the season on April 22nd.

Can't complain -- staying healthy, getting in lots of training!

Hello to all! Weather's finally changed here, too - sunny - hit 79 earlier this week, but on a workday. Now about 50 - supposed to get into the 60s over the w/e - time tomove the bike outside!

Did the Lifetime Fitness Indoor Tri last Sunday - In general a pretty well run event involving a 10 minute swim, 10 minute transition, 30 minute indoor bike, 5 minute transition, 20 minute run on a treadmill. Ranking was by distance covered. All the bikes were supposed to have the same resistance, but that got changed by the staff, so the bike rankings really weren't valid.

Anyhow, I'm pretty pleased with my results - 3rd in the masters cohort (age 40 +) in the swim, about mid pack in the bike and run. The run surprised me - because of my hip, I've been running a minute, then walking, etc. I ended up covering 1.9 miles in 20 minutes, which put me in the middle of the pack - walking at 4.5 mph for a minute, then running at 5.5 - 6 - 6.5 - 7 mph for increasing amounts of time during the 20 minutes. All in all, the hip felt good, and I'm gonna try to complete the sprint triathlons this year, and maybe do relay or just quit after the swim and bike in the others I'm doing (one or two Olympic tris, and Steelhead 70.3...)

Anyone else doing events now?

March has gone well for me.

  • Got a work-out in 26/31 days, including a stretch of 14 in a row.
  • Ran a 1/2 marathon (1:52)on 2 days notice and actually felt great afterwards!?
  • Met goal of 1,200m continuous free-style swim - really amazed myself here.
  • Got through MS phase of strength training without injury and leg-pressed 500lb for three sets of 6 reps.

Areas that need improvement...

  • Sleep - need to get 7+ hours consistently.  Current avg 6:40/night isn't going to cut it in April when I ramp up to 7+ hrs/week of training.
  • Nutrition - again, needs to improve as I put more demand on my body.  Got to cut the Coke out of my weekday lunch routine.

April plans:

  • Ramping up to 7+ hr/week training volume (maintaining swim/run while adding bike volume)
  • Going for a 1,600m continuous free-style swim
  • Backing-off weight loads as I move to maint. phase of strength training.
  • 14 mile long run planned

How was everybody's April?  For me, this is how I'd summarize April:

  • trained 20 of 30 days, not stellar, but decent considering work lately
  • started to get some quality bike rides in
  • swam 1,600m continuous
  • GAVE UP COKE - not a drop the whole month
  • sleep habits still suck - averaging <6.5 hr/night
  • missed lots of strength work-outs, but power not a limiter, so this is what was dropped when life interfered with my training

May goals:

  • go to sleep before midnight every night
  • breakfast every morning
  • bike 2x per week
  • get back to more swim technique drills
  • complete a 2,000m continuous swim
  • begin incorporating light, running speed work

I had a good April. Here's my highlights:

-- Over 300 miles on the bike
-- Weekly speed workouts at the track for my running
-- First tri of the year, with my best-ever placement and times
-- Kept my weight in the 165-170 range
-- Completed my first "triple brick" workout (see April 28)

I'm very pleased! But, there are things to concentrate on for May:

-- Be more consistent with strength and core workouts
-- Watch my diet as I start to taper for Eagleman
-- Keep sticking to the plan as Eagleman approaches

I'm pretty optimistic I'll have a solid race in June.

I had a pretty good April in terms of Training, Highlights

-Only missed two days
- Swam over 17miles in the pool
- Biked almost 200
- Ran almost 80
- Did a lot of bricks and had some solid run times

Need to get some OWS practice and get use to the water.

May goals:
- Sub 22min 5k on May 5th
- Sub 20min swim during Tri on May 12th
- Finish FL 70.3

Going to cut back training this month with an event every weekend. I know I will finish FL 70.3 but i really want to not have a OWS freak out during it, good thing is I swam this course in Sept for my 1st ever tri and I know I can do it.

First and foremost, CONGRATS to Teddy for finishing the HIM and nailing the swim!

OK, how was everyone's May?

For me here are the positives:

  • Month 2 without Coke.  I tried caffine-free diet, but decided "Whats the point?"
  • Dropped 3 pounds, down to 172.
  • Got some good time in the saddle, including longest bike ride ever of 51 miles.
  • Big run month (for me) - 80 miles
  • Completed 20mi bike in 57:45 beating goal of one hour.
  • Completed 2,000m continuous free-style swim.
  • Overall increased intensity level.

...and areas that need work:

  • Poor sleep habits.  Averaged 6.6hr/nt.  Better than April, but still poor.
  • Need to get at least two rides in per week from now through July.

While, there are other "nice to do" things, getting 7hr/nt of sleep and two rides per week in June would be great.  I've got two races coming up.   A half-marathon on 6/2 and my first olympic distance triathlon on 6/16.  After that it will be all about training for the 70.3 event on 8/4.

Thanks you Brian! You and Ken continued to give me support and encouragement throught my training up to this point that really helped me out. I am very happy that I was able to join this group and gain the support of both of you.

May Highlights:

1. Was Able to conquire fear of OWS.
2. Fl 70.3
3. PR for 5k on May 5th (21:25)

Had Three races in May (Sprint Tri, 70.3, and 5k) so my training numbers were low to do a lot of rest time.

Goals for June:
1. Switch Training from Tri specific to run specific
2. Sub 45 minute 10K on June 17th
3. Swim 3 Times weekly

Looking forward to reading everyone's training logs and race reports.

Good Luck to Ken on Eagle Man June 10th and to Brian on his Olympic June 16th. Both you guys have been doing a great job in training and will rock your races.

Thanks -- remember that you're the one who did the work!

Highlights for May:

Good cycling month -- 365 miles, including some nice long rides (several of over the race distance).
Stayed injury free.
Kept my weight right around 165-167.

Only 9 days to Eagleman! I keep fluctuating between confidence and a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. In retrospect though, the smartest thing I did in preparation was to use a coach -- it kept me totally on line and working consistently throughout my training.

Now it's just a matter of execution.
