Subject: RE: Bike Training

Many cyclists and triathletes incorporate spin classes heavily into their training routines.

Most bike training is not about just riding for 45 mins etc - it is about mixing up the way that you train - sometimes working just one leg to improve technique, sometimes riding at one set Heart Rate but in different gears with different pedal rate, sometimes doing long steady rides etc.

Spin work is an excellent way to get a great workout and also build up endurance and time on the bike.

Thanks! I uploaded the pic of me finishing my first and only tri last August. I really appreciate all of the help! I love the spin class it was very difficult and I have no problem with distance riding, but the class was tough!

Now I have to figure out my training log.

Thanks again!!!

Nice,

I've decided that anyone who has completed a Tri is automatically a hero in my book.

I purchased a bike over the weekend. The bikeshop that sponsored me the past three years for BMX helped me out, and saved me a few hundred dollars and a custom fitting.

06 Cervelo P2SL Limited Red w/ Dura Ace

it is very sharp. i dont have any gear or pedals yet, so its still at the shop. we will fit it all when i pick up the pedals and shoes.

Man that is the bike I want but way out of my price range.  I will have to scrimp on some things, but pretty much anything will be an improvement over what I am riding now.

Congrats on the new bike.

My bike is an 80's Specialized Allex with a completely worn out 105 group and some banged up mavic wheels.  About the only thing salvageable on the bike would be the Profile Air Styke clip on aerobars and the Bontrager Seat.  I bought it used like 10 years ago and some of the components were about ready to be replaced then.  I sold it to my Brother in law who wrecked it a bunch and realized he should stick to running, so he gave it back to me.  I raced last season on it and I will be damned if I do it again.  I was having trouble keeping up with said hybrid/mtbers even on the downhill.  No more bandaids for me.  I wantneed something that was at least made in this century.

I'm going to get myself a real bike in March - I've given myself a budget of £500 (what's that - about $950?) but that's got to include shoes and a helmet.  A mate of mine works in a bike shop so I think I'll be looked after.

Spin classes better count - that's all I've been able to do since I don't own one!

Anyone familiar with KHS brand of triathlon bike? Model is Flite 320. I have an opp'y to purchase last years model for $599, which is $400 off regular price. I'm thinking it will be sufficient given that I'm riding a mountain bike that I purchased at Toys R Us--ten years ago. If I'm going to spend anything of significance, I want to be sure it's worth going after.

I'm just piping in here to explain my lack of contribution!! You folks are all way over my head. Never heard of a spin class / didn't know that bike parts are called components! I just get on my 15 year old bike and ride. My battle ( and my motivation) is the extra 100 pounds I'm carrying around and the damage I believe it caused to my knee.

I just wanted you all to know that while I don't have alot to say, I am taking in all the conversations and I really appreciate the encouragement. (Which I haven't figured out how to do yet!) That would be a time issue. Three young children all of which had 2 days of flu this week - Im afraid it may be getting me also.

Thanks everyone! Best of luck with your training.

Hey Lori, great to hear from you.

Best tip for using the site is click on everything and look for buttons to press, you can't break anything and if you have a question on how the sites components work there are plenty of guys who can around and I think the site has a number of useful articles about it too.

Keep up the training anyway - no-one here is that far ahead of anyone - we're all trying to figure stuff out, work on getting fit, and give each other encouragement to keep up with it.

Keep it up!!!

Luke

Hey Lori, while I might know what a spin class is, I am no accomplished athlete. I just keep trying and I don't get involved in all the conversation, becuase I have a hard time following all of the intellectual bike talk. I rode a mountain bike in my first and only tri. I rode fast on my heavy bike and went on to the run. for me the most important thing was that I finished it and they didn't close the course, there were still people crossing the finish line and the photographer was still there and so were the crowds. That was the best. Just keep on trying and you'll tri. I promise.

Nice run Spokes.  We are under 1 1/2 inches of ice here in central Missouri.  But school is cancelled for tomorrow so at best I am looking at a 3 day week.  I am trapped inside because of all the fukin ice, but at least I am not at work.  Maybe I will do one of those pushups I put in my goals........probably not.

Lori, as silly as it sounds, just keep plugging away a day at a time, stay on on track, you'll drop the weight and you'll get better every day.

And as a parent of a boy that will 7 on Wed and a little girl that will be 5 next month, I truly appreciate your time-management issues.

Couldn't agree with Scott more.

I know I'm training like a man possessed, but being fair it's only just over 18 months ago I was playing 1st XV rugby and training 3-5 times a week so I'm not a particularly good yardstick.

It is literally just a matter of getting out there and doing it, string a couple of workouts together and before too long you'll be wondering how you ever managed without them.

Glenn.

Thank you all! I am continuing to plug away at it! Walk was shortened a bit last night, wind chill was in the teens, and the wind was blowing about 30 mph. I WAS FROZEN!! But felt good that I went out there and did it! I will contiunue to look for options and anticipate Spring in Southern Illinois. I WILL complete a tri in July.

I find that signing up for the race early gives one extra reason to complete it - 6 months of hard work not to waste $100 may seem like crazy reasoning but it works for me.
