NAME: jldicarlo / Jennifer

STORY: I have a pretty typical story of how I got into triathlons. A runner by trade, I heard about a really fun long distance bike event that I wanted to do. So I bought a bike and trained for it. Then a few months later my grad school built a brand new Olympic size swimming pool so I started swimming. Poof...a triathlete is born. I've never been very good, but I'm very crazy! Never one to jump in hesitantly, I did my first triathlon in 2004 at the Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman, one of the hardest Half Ironmans in the US. I was undertrained, unprepared, uneducated about the sport...but I did it anyway! I was TRULY a beginner triathlete! I still remember being in T2 standing there doing my mental checklist to make sure I had everything and I was SO SLOW that the guy who came in second overall was already dismantling his transition area. He told me to make sure I carried some water. Laughing Despite these rough beginnings, I kept coming back for more! Injury has held me back in the last few seasons, but I am still very active in racing. I learn more and more every year and every race!

FAMILY STATUS: Single

CURRENT TRAINING: I work with Mike Ricci of D3 Multisport. He runs the show as far as putting together the training plan. This season I hope to do at least one half ironman, a few Oly's, a few half marathons, and a marathon...gee, a little of everything!

LAST YEAR'S RACES: The highlights:

Olymipics: St. Anthony's, Memphis In May, Boulder Peak
HIM: 5430 Half -- Nearly PR'ed the bike even with a flat!
10k Swims: Horsetooth Reservoir USMS 10k Open Water Championships (coincidentally the same weekend as the 5430 HIM...the swim was first, the HIM the next day and I still posted my second fasted HIM swim EVER)
2007 was rather injury plagued. I sprained my ankle mid-season which prevented me from running my planned half marathon. And then my season ended early after a chronic knee injury (I have a GREAT case of ITBS that just won't go away) flared up so badly at the 5430 Half that I had to stop racing.

2007 RACES: Well, I may end up having knee surgery...but if I don't, the big plans are:

St. Anthony's Olympic (2:30 or bust)
Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman (6 hours or bust)
Boulder Peak (Beat last year! This should be easy...last year the 10k part of the tri was my first run after spraining my ankle 7 weeks before!)
Horsetooth 10k Open Water Swim (3:15 or less)
Marine Corps Marathon (3:45 or bust)

WEIGHTLOSS: I am trying to drop down to 140lbs or less by St. Anthony's Triathlon. As I write this that is about a 25lb goal in four months...I guess I'd better get going, eh?

May I join? I'm not a 'cool kid', but I do have lots of questions.  This will be my second season, and I really need to get back into the swing of things.

Yeah!  I guess that means I should go out for a jog so that I'll have something to log.  Off I go!

May I join up with your group too?

I'll come back and write more or post to my logs what's been up.  The quick and dirty though is I'm recovering from a stress fracture in the right tib.  I'm finally getting my running legs back and can run without stopping for one mile.   wooo hoooo... it's the small things that count.   I used to run lots more and have run 3 marathons, done quite a few tris, the longest being an oly distance, etc.  Anyway... thanks for including me in.

Of COURSE you may join!

Stress fractures are no fun!  Coming back from injury isn't fun either!  Just be sure to take it NICE and SLOW.  I know it can be frustrating--when I run these days I do 5' run/5' walk and it drives me nuts!  But I know it will be worth it in the end!

To anyone wondering if they should join this group - DO IT!  Jennifer is an awesome athlete.  Her back to back 10k swim and HIM weekend was amazing!  She will make a great mentor.

I'd like to join your group if I may. I've been a member here for a little over a year. I started training last January and went from 260lbs to 230 by June which is when I had my first and only race of 2006. My second son was born in July and between him and my other son and a 60 hour work week including commuting I had to give something up so my training went. Now I am back and ready for the fun again. Starting in February I will become a full time stay at home Dad. So even if I just use the time I used to commute I'll have 20 extra hours a week to train. Hopefully you can help me stay focused and get me to where I know I can be with this triathlon thing.

Room for one more?

Major beginner here. No real athletic background.

I love love love love (did I say love?) swimming, I'm totally new to the bike and that other part of the trifecta—my nemisis the run (or in my case...the walk.)

I trained for 10 weeks before doing my first sprint in October, which was amazing! Now that I'm hooked, I have become a total gear junkie, lost about 30lbs and am joining a master swim group. I want to lose about 30 more lbs by May, build my legs for the bike and learn to enjoy running.

Oh and I'm sure I'll have some absurd questions... :-)

Welcome, Michael!  Of COURSE you can join!

Congrats on becoming a stay at home dad!  That's awesome!  You will DEFINITELY have more time to train.  Have you invested in a jogging stroller yet?    And the bike trainer is likely to become your friend too!

Sorry it took me so long to reply.  There is no one at work Christmas week so I took on a ton of additional duties and haven't been on BT much today.  I'm usually around all the time.   I'll be adding you to my friends list so I can check on your logs!

Welcome, Kara!   Yes, there is always room for one more!  Actually, I think you are #4, unless that person who bumped the thread for me wanted to join...it's hard to tell!

You'll fit right in.  I love love love love love swimming too (in case you couldn't tell from the 10k).  We have similar weight loss goals as well!  Cool!

This week was a bit crazy at work but I hope to spend some time online this weekend reading everyone's logs and getting to know y'all.

Hi! I was wondering if I could join this group...

NAME: Leigh

STORY: I ran recreationally for a couple years, but never with much consistancy. I get bored of one workout too easily. I started dating a guy who happened to be the president of our school's triathlon club, and he kept telling me to get a bike and give it a try. I started riding an old used Trek and loved it, so I added in swimming. About 4 months later I did my first race. I trained all year, but have had trouble with consistancy. For example, I trained 5 days a week well throughout november, and about 5 times in all of december.

Personally, I just graduated from penn state will owrk there for the next 4 months, and am applying to graduate schools in colorado. Since I know I'll be traveling a good bit this year and moving, i'm even more worried about my consistancy.

FAMILY STATUS: Boyfriend

CURRENT TRAINING: In a 'good' week, i like a couple 5-6 mile runs, a 10 miler, a coupld 25 mile bikes and a swim or two. I don't have many good weeks. Usually i end up with 1 or 2 runs, a bike, and a swim.

LAST YEAR'S RACES: clermont FL sprint (750 m/30km/5k), bethesda md supersprint (500 yd/10 mi/2.5 mi), columbia md irongirl (1 km/18 mi/3.5 mi)

2007 RACES: No idea...need to figure out where i'm going to live this summer. i'm aiming for 2 sprints and one oly.

WEIGHTLOSS: Since 2004 i've lost about 20 lbs, from 143 to near 120. I'm aiming for about 10 more by june.

Welcome, Leigh!   Of course you can join!

I will be jealous if you get to go to grad school in Colorado!  I LOVE that state!  It's a Tri-Mecca...if you go to grad school there you almost can't help BUT live the lifestyle!

You sound like you got into tri's about the same as I did...so slowly you didn't even see it coming!  I'll add you to my friends list!  More to come from me this weekend when I have some time to sit in front of the computer.  Christmas week was NUTS at work...too much to do and not enough people!

Okay, gang!  Looks like we have a full group!  I would love to take on more than seven, but we'll stay there for now so I can make sure I can give everyone enough attention!

Let's see...where to start, where to start!  Okay, I think I have everyone on my friends list.  If y'all haven't already, you should put each other on your friends lists so we can start checking on everyone.

And how about everybody works on getting some Long Term and Short Term goals in their blogs?  That way we know what everyone is working towards!

I think that's enough assignments for now.   Happy Friday!
