Oh, also, I have my strength coach helping me design a new routine to work around my injured arm. I can't wait to get back into the weights!

Tranndee--Hang in there. Being sick sucks, but you'll be back at it in no time.

Fred--Have you done the "Big Fish" tri? Another guy on the Michigan forum reccomended it.

Sara,

Not sure I understand the question regarding chains on my bike. At the moment I'm using spiked tires for the snowy conditions. Not sure if that helps, doesn't keep out the cold though, brrrrrrr.

George,

Haven't done Big Fish but have heard good things about it. In the last cople of years I have done Ann Arbor, Clarkston, Clark Lake, Novi, Stony Creek and Holly. Would recommend them all, well organized and great fun.

well I ran without cramps yesterday.  I did a lot of stretching and massage.   Hopefully I'll be able to keep this up.

Laura,

Great news, glad you were able to run pain free. Psychologicaly it's difficult to focus on running if you feel on the verge of getting an injury. Keep up the stretching and massage, always very tempting to stop once the cramp stops.

For everyone it's importantt to increase the running miles progressively, don't suddenly jump to a much higher distance. For example if you regularly run 3 miles don't suddenly go out and try 6. It's amazing how many people get injured by increasing the mileage too quickly; me included.

Regarding Fred's running comment--When I started running I took it real slow and progressed nicely, then I got cocky/stupid around the time 4 miles seemed easy. One day I decided I would try 8 thinking this would be a challenge-8 miles I didi, but suffered horrible Achilles Tendonitis. Had to take a few weeks off completely, and now still have to do 2x as much strectching as prevention.

Yes, I was stupid!

At last it's the weekend, been a long week at work with no time or energy to train. Went to the pool this morning and swam 1000yds in set of 200yds. Trying to work on keeping good technique (for me) rather than justswimming the distance. Definitely my worst discipline and still don't enjoy it.

May go for a run this afternoon if I can brave the cold; currently thermometer outside shows 9 degrees. Don't feel like spending an hour on the treadmill going nowhere when sun is shining outside.

What are the rest of you up to? Good time to start keeping a record of your progress in the training log. To use training logs you click on the "Training Log" button on the top of the screen and it directs you to the log. There you can record biking, running and swims along with other stuff. I know some of you are already doing it. Makes it easy to keep track of each others progress and “Inspire” each other along the triathlon road.

Can also add someone to your friends list by clicking on the “Control Panel" below the Beginner Triathlete.com logo, next click on "edit your training settings" to the right of the screen. Halfway down you will find an area to add people's screen name. Then click on apply at the bottom of the screen and you’re done. Can also use control panel to add picture, as Tranndee has done.

Enjoy the superbowl weekend.

Fred-I just started swimming, but it is my favorite--although I recognize that I am horrible. For me it is more relaxing than the pounding of running or the leg fatigue/pain I get from the bike. I guess everyone is different. I got the Total Immersion DVD and Swimming for Triathletes book and have found them very helpful. I am thinking of going to a TI coach in Ohio since there are NONE in Michigan.

BTW, I can't belive you can even THINK about running outside in this BS weather!

Small ride/run brick tomorrow morning.

Happy SuperBowl everyone!

GDOG - Run was great only 11 degres of cold, as long as you wear the right gear it keeps out most of the chill. Biggest problem was ice forming on the outside of my sunglasses. You know it's cold when you get icicles at the end of your nostrils!

Fred you are crazy about running in this cold.  I have trouble getting out the barn to ride my horse when it's this cold.

Anyhow, yesterday I had a great run on the treadmill.  I did .2 miles warm up walk and then ran 2 miles at 5.2 mph, then did a 5 minute cool down and lots of stretching.  My calf felt good, but in the middle of the run it started to get just a bit tight, so I tried to keep it relaxed and was able to complete my run.

I'll continue stretching to try and keep it loose.

I rode my horse today and what a rock star he was.  We were able to do everything right.  His training is coming along very nicely.

i drove from petoskey to flint today. it took me an hour to get to the express way, and 200 miles on I-75 took me four hours. It was a horrible, but I got here safely, even if miserable. I guess petoskey's going to get 2-4 FEET of snow tonight. Glad i'm not there!

GDOG - The TI DVD is really good and clearly illustrates proper technique. I used it last year and can comfortably swim freestyle and breath easily, biggest challenge currently is to get faster. I'm stuck at 2:20 / 2:30 per 100 yards and don't seem able to improve beyond this point. Thinking about joining a masters class and getting some tuition. Good luck with the DVDS and book, let the group know how you progress.

Laura - Glad to hear your calf is improving. If the stretching alone doesn't help enough you can try applying heat (hot water bottle) before starting your warm up and then icing after the run and after stretching. Not sure how often you are running but if while it's still sore alllow a rest day in between runs to aid recovery.

Sunday is usually my day off, but w/ the Super Bowl today i am taking Monday off. So, i Biked 30 minutes for 10 miles and ran 20mins for 2.5 miles. it felt good after i was done, knowing i can enjoy the Super Bowl w/ a day off (from training, not work). My wife is from chicago, so she is a bears fan and i am a Green bay packer fan.....I guess i will root for the same division.

A positive attitude is contagious!

GMac-Nice workout! Sounds exactly like mine today. Felt good. Now if I can be reasonable about my SuperBowl food intake, I might be OK.

As a fellow NFC guy(Detroit), I hope it rains.

GO BEARS!

Thanks for the advice Fred.  Hopefully I won't have to resort to those measures and the stretching and massage will continue to work.  I'm running twice a week right now, but only because I seem to have been having a bit of trouble getting up in the mornings.  I used to never have this problem, but the past two weeks I can't seem to get my butt out of bed.

My routine has changed cause I got a new job in December and I think it's messing with my sleep schedule.  I used to get up at 6:30, drive 30 min to the gym that was near my work, work out, shower, and go to work.  Now I have a new job which is up in Boulder where the parking sucks, so I've been taking the bus.  So I get up, drive 15 minutes to the nearest gym, workout, usually have to cut it short because I'm running behind cause I got up too late, drive 15 minutes home, shower, drive 10 min to the bus stop, takes 40 min to get to work if the bus is on time, then 5 min walk from the bus stop.  So if I don't get up by 6:15, I can't work out cause I don't have time as I really need to be into work no later then about 9 or so.

So, I have decided on a new routine.  Get up, drive up to the gym near work, work out, shower, drive to the sucky parking which takes about 15 min to get there and find a spot, then 10 min walk into work from the parking area.  This saves me about 45 minutes in the morning, though now I have to pay for gas.  I think I'll try this routine for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.I

I gotta get back into my normal workouts this week and quit sleeping in.  I feel so much better when I work out 5 days a week instead of 3.

Question for everyone.  What time do you get up in the mornings to work out and what time do you go to bed?  It seems like I can never get enough sleep during the week and I wind up sleeping until 9 or 9:30 on the weekends.  I hate getting up that late, I used to never sleep that late on the weekends, I'm not sure what's going on the last several months.  Maybe I'm just starting to get old and I'm in denial?  haha.  I'll be 39 in April (yikes!).

Your diet can have lot to do with how sleep you are too.

I usually stay up until about 11pm. I will get up at 1:45 to get my husband up for work. When he leaves for work at 2:45 I will go back to sleep until 8:30 when myd aughter will wake me up to play. I go to the gym around 2pm when my husband gets home from work.

I do not suggest this sleep schedual to anyone! lol

That doesn't sound fun.  Why do you get up when your husband gets up?  I assume that he goes to bed much earlier then you.
