What?  Her priorities are backwards.  If her priorities were right, cutting into BT time would be FIRST!

1) The work space was a cube

Sometime's there is a corporate culture of cubes.  My company (a Fortune 20 company) has everyone except the CEO in a cube...granted the cubes vary in size, but they're still open air cubes...

Now, if the prospective company was going to be cutting into BT, you know we can't allow that.

At a previous job, a very large company at the time, everyone, including the CEO was in cubes.  The CEO wanted it this way.  Granted his cube was huge and he had a private conference rooms for those top secret company meetings, but his computer and all his work stuff was in his cube.

I just turned down a job as the General Accounting Manager for a decent size company because 1) The work space was a cube  2) it told me that any company that would put their general accounting manager in a cube doesn't take position seriously and only views it as a clerk level job 3) being in a cube really would cut into my BT time.....

I commend your decision. Screw the mice maze cube. Just thinking of sitting in a cube doing accounting (which I did for many years as an official Cut Paste and Attacher) gives me anxiety attacks.

The split is about 60/40 with 60% being offices...  funny thing is it's a telecommunications company and ALL the sales reps have offices..  the sales reps are never even supposed to be IN the office..

the cubes are inhabited by IT techs and switch techs..

it does truly concern me that they don't take their general accounting manager position seriously enough to think the person would need a private office..

In this situation, you made the right choice...I am curious, did you tell the company why you were not taking the job...the cube reason, not the BT reason.

Out of curiosity, why does having an office mean status?  Is it because that's the culture that you're used to?  Is there perhaps a different reason that they wouldn't provide an office?

I'm not trying to be an a$$, I'm asking a legitimate question.  You said the sales people all have offices.  Maybe in this company, offices aren't a status thing.  Where I currently work, the vast majority of people are in "cubes".  However, they're very short.  Even sitting, I can see across the entire dept.  This creates an atmosphere of increased camaraderie and communication, neither of which are bad things.  Maybe they feel that, as a manager in a non-sales role, you should be viewed as being available, and being out in the open creates that impression.  Perhaps they just don't currently have the space for an office, but you could've gotten one later....

Sounds to me that the cube thing was only one of several reasons.  I'm not faulting your decision at all, by the way.  I was just asking questions.

I'm also not denying that there are conversations that should be kept in private, especially in terms of dealing with financial info.  But you'd be surprised how much privacy a cube can actually have, so long as you're not a yeller.

You sure you're not working in IT?  Most people feel that I only do busy work, too.  Besides, it's just math, right? (kidding, kidding).

I completely agree you made an excellent decision.  Personally, I think I person should always move forward in their career, not backward.  That being said, I will never take a job where I make less (or the same) money, sit in a cube, or have to log my time.  The only possible exception is, I will surely make less money when I quit this job, but that is only because I won't be working...and I can live with that.

Best of luck in your continued search, I'm sure you'll find something excellent!

sure.. if it's just math.. you don't mind if i make a mathmatical error and cut your salary in half...

Assuming you still have rights to get into the system......
