For me, the answer to that last question is always lungs. The biggest limiting factor is always oxygen... lungs ramp up to max effort way before any muscle group.

Going on past performance I'd say the same thing. My lungs always seems to tire before my legs. I'll give it a go though and report back when I've done it.

Good call Kate. You too Chad, but how about you go ahead and do the test and let me know what happens at each stage.

Well I started the test yesterday, the 10 minutes easy spinning was just that, the 135 was nothing too. However, one minute into the 150bpm my bike chain broke . So I'm going to get it fixed today and try again

De Cracker's Gettin' Mo Better tips

Weight loss is good for those of us who need it but also don't overlook the need for the reduction of body fat. This isn't weight loss as I was reminded just yesterday. Yesterday I was weighed and had my body fat checked. I had only lost 1.9 lbs but I had lost 3.7 lbs of body fat. I had gained 1.6 lbs of muscle weight. So my %BF was down more than my weight loss would indicate. So let's lose the fat but keep the muscle. Keep the good but get out there and burn off the bad.

btw ..remember fat cells never go away (unless they are lipo'ed). So as you reduce remember they are still there waiting to come back to haunt you if given the chance.

For the time being I'll have to wait because it is 10 degrees outside. I can see my cardio base improving dramatically already, though, so I know I'm on the right track.

Heh. The cold doesn't bother me, I'm from Canada... but you can't bike any distance when there is ice on the ground.

DeCracker's Gettin' Mo Better tips

Want to put a whole new slant on your motivation and training? Look into participating in Team n Training, which is a great way to prepare for your first tri and also raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Soc. Check out their website or chat with the many folks here on BT who have paved the way to tri success while also helping find a cure for these terrible diseases. TNT offers help with training as well as paying for your tri. But you have to reach your fundraising goal. But imagine how great it would feel to know you helped others while reaching your personal goal. One of the great things TNT does for the beginner triathlete is that on the day before the race they have experienced Triathletes walk you through every aspect of the course to include a practice swim. On race day some even have "swim buddies" who accompany those who feel a little shaky about an OWS. Now how cool is that!

Hope I'll get to try the test this weekend. Got another question, though.

What do you think about riding a stationary recumbent bike on the days I'm not running? Since I'm not starting the actual triathlon training until I get through this couch to 5k thing, do you think it would mess me up to do that kind of biking? I'm only asking 'cause we've got one in the basement and it's too #&*@# cold outside to go for a ride.

It's fine to use any type of fitness equipment you may have. Recumbents do not require any core effort since the back is the anchor point but you are still pedaling and getting an aerobic/anerobic workout. I say go for it. Get some music and get a good high cadence going with sufficient resistance. It has been my observation that if you can read a book while working out then you're probably not working hard enough. So icksnay on the books and magazines. Go with good fast tunes and have your sweat towel and fan ready and close by.

Do what I do... get an old TV and VCR or DVD player... I find I can totally lose track of 20 minutes of 130bpm with a good movie.

O.K. Did it - when I said it was my lungs that was a total lie - as I found out. I do actually think it is my lungs or definitely my breathing for swimming but the bike was a different matter!

Pedal easy for 10 minutes and take note of your HR - about 121
OK now lets take it to 135 for 2 mins. What does your legs feel? How are you breathing?
legs starting to hurt breathing not too bad
OK let's take it to 150 for 2 mins. How are your legs? How are you breathing?
Really tough, feels like it's unsustainable, breathing heavy, legs hurt
OK let's change to a harder gear and get the HR up to 175-180 with a cadence of 80-90. After 30 seconds how do you legs feel? How are you breathing?
I tried but this was too much at this stage so slowed my efforts down to complete the rest of my workout. I'm afaird there was no way I was going to be able to complete the finale!

So what does that tell you - apart from the fact that I'm currently rubbish!? That said this is on'y week 5 of my new 'life' so I think I am seeing a progressive increase in my ability.

Whatever you do, don't give up. My point was to give you a demonstration of the relationships between aerobic fitness, strength, and endurance. We need all three.

O.K. I get you about the not giving up but I have a question - you suggest 135 for 2', then 150 for 2' then 175-80 for 30s then 90-100% of Max HR
But given the heart rate zones suggested on the BT site 175-180 _is_ 90-100%! So what should I do?

Recalcuate the proper ranges. Those numbers were probably given based on his age, not yours, so if you work backwards from the numbers he gave using his age, you can derive the percentages. Then take those percentages and apply them to your own age.

Kate I was giving some average numbers and you will probably need to adjust but I'm 52 and have no problems getting into the 185-190 bpm. You may have to use the RPE method but you did the test and you did well. I hope you have a better perspective on base training. You are on the right track. Weight loss, cardio, strength, endurance= better life and a triathlete.

Train hard......race easy.

Russ,

I'd like your opinion. What do you think is better...I ended up not having time to do my workout until after 8:00. However, that would put me getting to bed late and not nearly enough sleep. If I have a crazy day like today...what is better...fit in the workout, but get bad sleep and pay for it tomorrow, or skip the workout and get a full night's sleep?

Just wondering what you thought...

Thanks!

Sleep vs training. For me it's two issues. I will rarely if ever delay bed time for training. Sleep is too important for me at my age and like all of you I need to be ready to be my best when I go to work each day. So I need my rack time. However I will hit the rack early and get up early to train. Now this is also hard for me because I like my morning sleep. But it's the hours rested that's important.

So if you've had a bad day...well hit the rack. Now should the day come when Nike is writing you the million dollar checks, well just do it! But until then.....sleep tight.

On the other hand, I always put off the sleep in favor of the training, when necessary. A less than stellar workout is still a workout, right?

Of course, I suffer from pretty bad sleep apnea, so I live my whole life on 3 hours' sleep. I'm just used to it.

Hey group, I was just wondering if it takes a while to get used to bike seats? On both my bikes the seat seems to be uncomfortable after a few minutes is this something I just need to get used to again, or should I be looking for different seat?
