NAME: Juliapurr - real name Julia Purrington

STORY: I swam in high school and through my fresh year in college.  Then I moved to Colorado for skiing, MTbiking, rock climbing and other fun.  Got married, had 2 kids and got WAY out of shape.  Being a former athlete, I was seeking a new outlet, so my Bro in law helped me buy a road bike.  After a month I was hooked on biking and started swimming again.  I then decided to buy a pair of sneakers...  Within a week I registered for a triathlon in CA (I live in CO, but the season here was over and I'm not the type to wait around...)  and I logged on to BT and downloaded a training program.  I was HOOKED immediately- that was Nov '05.   I then registered for a 1/2 MAry (my run was the WEAK point) for the off season, hired a coach and did 21 races in '06 (which is too many for one season, but it was FUN!)  I did everything from 5K runs to a 1/2 Iron.  I recently finished my first Marathontoo (my first race of '07!).  For this season, I'm working towards USAT AG Nationals and hopefully Worlds as well as Escape from Alcatraz! I'm also long term working towards an IM in '08 or '09.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, 2 kids - Alex is 5, Max is 4 and both did their first tri last year!

CURRENT TRAINING: I use AJ Johnson with D3 for my coaching.  I'm working on the OLY distance this season.  Trying to build speed before going long, but eventually HIM and IM goals are up there.  I try to maintain 10-15 hrs/ week including strength and yoga.  I love to go fast, but I need to work on my bike this season.  My run has finally cought up!

LAST YEAR'S RACES: I did 1 sprint, 5 OLY tris, one HIM, 2 winter Du's, one 5/30/5 du, and 5 swim run biathlons, 3 1/2 mary's and 3 5k's...  That makes 21 races!  Plus an uphill snowshoe race!  What fun!!  Oly is my favorite right now.  I liked the HIM, but I need more than one season to perfect THAT!  I was able to take 17 minutes off my 1/2 Marathon time in one season, as well as take off almost a minute per mile in an OLY.  Running.  My high point of the season was racing at Scott Tinley's in SLO, CA and qualifying for Alcatraz this season!!!

2007 RACES: Mary in Jan (DONE 3:40 and Boston Qualified!)  Lake Havasu OLY in March, Wildflower OLY in May, Escape from Alcatraz, 5430 Sprint, and USAT Nationals in June, Boulder PEak in July.  Other than that I'm waiting to see if I qualify for Worlds.  If I do - Hamburg here I come!  If not, probably the 5430 Half again.

WEIGHTLOSS: I've lost about 5# (lost 10# during the season and I've put 5# back on in the off season)  I'd like to get another 10 off from where I am right now, but I don't want to freak out to do it.  I just work out and eat healthy - although I love Ice Cream and Beer....

Hey Julia!  Congrats on the Marthon Qualifying time!  Your right it was cold!  I don't know if it is possible to join more than one group, but I might get more feedback since my group I'm in is so huge!  You seem very similar to me in goals, and might offer some more feedback when I need it.  I definately need a little mental toughness.

I am training for a 1/2 IM in June, however after the 1/2 marathon at AZ I am nursing my IT band.  Last season was my first season doing tri's I did 3 sprints and 1 Olympic.  AZ was my first 1/2 marathon...so I'm plugging right along.  I am married with no kids, except those that I teach.  I will be 31 in a few months, but feeling great!  I am currently organizing a branch of the tri group I belong to in my area, so that I don't have to drive 1:20 both ways every Sat.  I am a high school physical education teacher and basketball coach.  I'm completing my Grad. degree in June...I can't wait!  I'd like to also do a marathon this fall.

hi julia and kersten,
i would love to join your group--i'm SO glad that i finally found someone who is a mom balancing training and family, because thats where i'm at right now! But i *really* want some feedback on my training and would love others to bounce ideas/workouts/questions off of.

My name is Megan and like you, i have been athletic all my life. throughout high school i waterskiied competitively and continued to do so during college off and on. i did a lot of running and weight training during the off seasons to keep in shape.
then life caught up with me... and i was in school, working two jobs. i got married and just after i graduated from college we had triplets. So, got in runs when i could, did mt. biking when i could, but really, who has the time (or will) with 3 babies to take care of?
So, fast forward--now the triplets are 4 1/2, in preschool 4 days a week and we have another baby, who just turned one. But she is a great stroller-running partner and content to hang at the gym childcare for a couple of hours now and then. My husband is in his last yr of med school and when he's around, is extremely supportive and excited for all my crazy 'goals'.

2006--Last year i picked up running again a few weeks after my baby was born and did my first 10K in march '06. then i did my first 1/2 marathon in June. I really wanted to incorporate biking into my workouts and somehow came upon a sprint tri--did my 1st one in sept and my second one in december. i was totally hooked!

2007--Ok, so now is where i really need some feedback--i'm training for my first 1/2 IM the end of June. I have moments that i feel i've bitten off more than i can chew, but so far the training is going well, and i'm following a plan i got off of here (and customized a little to fit the schedule). I'm excited, i feel like for it being only january, yes, i have a long way to go to be ready, but i still have 5 months.
i will have lots of questions for you, but i guess this novel post is long enough for now.
thanks!

Megan

Megan---Wow!  You need to contact my sister-in-law who is also a member of B.T.  I roped her into doing a race with me last year and she is now hooked, but you both have a lot in common...atleast three things for sure!  Triplets...I think hers are 5.  tripletmom01 or something like that...you can look it up, or I can get back to you with her full address.  Anyway, half marathon is definately doable!  I just got done with mine a few weeks ago..I missed some workouts over the holidays, but I did make it.  I got so hooked you can now say I am addicted to running. Make sure you do your long runs and don't bump up too fast.  My program was very easy, it was one of Hal Higdon's novice programs...check out halhigdon.com.  Also, if you don't have the Garmin watch/IPod food pod, check out the USATF website to map your route so you can find out how far you are running outside.  Ok, enough for tonight, heading to bed, I feel the flu coming on.

i actually already DID a 1/2 marathon, last june. this june i'm training for a 1/2 ironman. sorry if my post didn't make sense.
congrats on doing your 1/2 marathon! i love that distance, competitive enough, yet, a little more do-able than a full marathon.
anyway, i'd love to talk to your sis in law!
thanks for the reply.

Megan-

Looks GREAT!!!  Just so you know, I started running literally 18 months ago.  I did my first 1/2 mary last year in January and my first HIM in August last year.  Pick a good plan and stick to it - you will get there!!!  I won't say it's easy and I won't tell you that the run at the HIM will be great, but I will tell you that you can do it well if you are determined enough.

Hi Julia,

I would like to join your group Julia. I'm a complete beginner having just started swimming again after a 15 year break. I've been swimming about 4 hours a week ( 1 hour at a time)since December and absolutely love it. Biking is also something I love to do and have no problem biking for hours at a time. My problem though is running, I have bad joints, my knees and hips have hurt in the past while running. MRI results are coming in next week, if there is no injury I will start running again just a bit more slowly and cautiously. One specialist I saw believed my joint problem was due to muscle imbalance which is easily fixed with weight training. The most I ever ran was about 15km.

Each week I spend about 10 hours exercising doing various things such as yoga, biking, swimming, playing squash, and doing weights. In better weather rock climbing and rollerblading. I'm also an avid caver, caving is an awesome way to improve endurance.

I hope to enter my first triathlon in June 07, earlier if I find one. I'm going to chose a program from the list they offer here also I'll record my stats and daily exercise. I'm F 31 from Toronto by the way.

Looking forward to this

Dear Julia,
My husband and I would seriously like to be considered for your group.
We would like to participate in a local sprint coming up June 9 2007.
We are currently overweight and working really hard to correct that for our health and children. We have two active children 15 daughter and 8 son. We a gym members and have been going 6-7 days a week since the beginning of the year. I am currently a member of weight watchers, 3 years ago I joned and lost 30lbs. I had quit WW and just recently rejined because I have gained it all back over the past 2 years. My husband is into the weight training while love the elliptical machine and aerobic classes. My current execise consists of m - w 45 -50 minutes on the elliptical the after dinner brisk walk 60+ min, wed 60 min step aerobic, Thurs either 60 elliptical or 50 low impact class plus the after dinner walk, Fri ellip and walk, Sat Low impact class, Sun weight/cardio 60 min class.
In the summer we do go to the lake quite a bit, we own a boat, so it is mostly play not just swimming. We both are fairly good swimmers. Biking however would be the wekest point for us I think?
I would love some in put.
We would like to be considered for your group. We too are from CO.
Thanks in advance.

Ok so right now here's what we have -

Kersten - Married, no kids, lives where??  Main goal for the season is a Half Ironman (HIM) tri.

Megan - Married, mom of 4 including triplets!!!  Lives where??  Main goal for the season is a HIM

Francis Jade - F31 from Toronto.  Limiter is running due to some joint problems - maybe.  Wants to do her first tri in June!!!

Diane and Mike - from Colorado - married couple.  Trying to get in shape and lose some weight and do a sprint tri in June.

OK Looks good!!  Here are a few questions for everyone:

Hopefully everyone has a goal of enjoying this, and other than that, seems like we have a few sprinters and some people trying to up thier distance to the HIM.  But give me 3 goals for the next few months.  Here are mine - My A goal this season is SPEED - I want to go to NAtionals at the end of June and Place (yes, I'm a little competetive ).  My next goal is to be a little more attentive to my nutrition and rest.  I've been told that many age group athletes neglect this, so I'm going to start paying more attention to those 2 aspects throughout my base period.  And my 3rd goal is to just have fun with all of the training but maintain at least 10 hours a week.   I think it will be fun to see why so many people do this sport and to realize that everyone's goals are different.  I don't want to apply my goals to any of you.  If you just want to finish and lose a few lbs - GREAT, if you want to be competetive and step up to the next level that's great too!

What is your strength, your weakness??  My strength is swimming, and my weakness - well, it's always been the running, but I think now I've caught up there and need to work on my bike.

What's your favorite workout - least favorite??  My favorite workouts are usually long runs in the snow   Peaceful and time for thought.  (other than races of course - those are my absolute favorite workouts    My least favorite workouts are anything over an hour on my trainer...  BORING!!  And it hurts my butt.

Lastly, Where are you all from???

Hi Julia,

I would love to join your group. I am a mom of 2 little cuties in Washington. Ian is 2.5 and Kaia is 3 months.

I have always been active. Played field hockey, basketball and tennis in High School and swam competitively through our local club. In college, I ran and played basketball. When I moved to Seattle from Boston, I added golf.

I decided last month that I needed a plan if I was going to get back into shape and so I started a workout schedule that I downloaded from the New York Triathlon club. It seems having a schedule is what I needed to get my hectic days in order.

I have no races under my belt at all. My husband did the Issaquah Tri and I was there to root him on. I am thinking of starting with that one, or the Danskin a little later in the summer.

Cheers,

Caycee

this seems like a great group--nice to "meet" all of you.

First of all, I'm in Arizona, greater phoenix area.
3 goals for the next few months:
1. stick to my training schedule the best i can. so far, so good! but i need to make my workout a priority in my day and get my training in as early as possible in the day, otherwise it gradually loses priority as the day goes on.
2. improve swim technique with the result being to hopefully improve my speed and endurance in the water. (I'm scheduling a couple of private lessons in february).
3. improve my nutrition--i can tell that my increased demands on my body with training are requiring more fuel--but i want to make sure i'm eating the *right* fuel that my body needs to keep up my energy and stamina. I'm also still breastfeeding my daughter which i know takes some extra calories from me in the day. Weight loss isn't really a goal for me (i have extra belly skin--won't ever see me in a two piece but i think its just from two rigorous pregnancies). But i do want to make sure i'm eating better and eating the RIGHT things so i have enough protein and energy!

Julia, you mentioned the run being hard in the HIM. this is actually the part i'm most worried about! i'm not a stellar swimmer, but i have no doubts that i can manage the swim. same with the bike (well, i am a little worried about the bike, especially since i've heard the course is a LOT of uphill the first bit) but i just fear that after both of those events, as manageable as they may be on race day, that they will tire me out quite a bit and then to run the 13 miles has me really intimidated. everyone always seems to fear the swim, but i'm really fearing the run. i know i can walk during the run portion, but my goal is to finish in less than 8 hours (closer to 7 would be better!!) really, my goal is to finish, but i'm such a time/numbers person, i have to have a number to shoot for!

also, in my training plan it has me run for a set amount of minutes. problem is, i'm a slow runner, so i never get very high mileage. how can i effectively train for 13 miles when i don't ever go very far. should i be trying to incorporate more speed into my runs?

Hi Julia,

Do you have room for another in your group? I am a 25-year-old female living in Eastern Washington, I have no race experience other than a couple 5Ks in college. I don't really have an athletic background but since graduating and getting a job that involves sitting in front of a computer all day, I've had to make more of a dedicated effort to fit in physical activity just to avoid putting on weight and to keep in good enough shape to go backpacking in the summer without wrecking my knees. I got interested in training for a triathlon to have a goal to work towards, and once I started reading race reports I went from thinking "how do people do this?" to "wow, it would be so awesome to do this" to "hey, I think I could do this!"

I've been logging my workouts and lurking some on the boards for a while. I hope there's still room for me, this sounds like a great group!

Hi Julia,
Do you have room for one more? This sounds like a great group! I'm new to triathlon training and am hoping to train enough to be able to get a sprint race in sometime in 2007. I'm really excited about starting a training program, and I want to keep my goals realistic but challenging. Btw, this is a fabulous website! ... The best I've found in all of my hunting.

I have run quite a few 5Ks, one 10K, and last year participated in a sprint relay triathlon as the runner. It was so exciting! I am running my first marathon in March (the Los Angeles marathon) and have been training for it since August 2006 with a group called the LA Leggers. It has been such a wonderful experience training with a group of people toward a common goal. I also take cycling classes a couple of times per week, which consists of 50-60 minutes of cycling per class (I'm completely addicted to these classes!). I'm not really a swimmer yet. I took classes as a kid, but have only flopped around in the pool on occasion since. So I signed up for a swim lesson next week, and luckily my gym has a pool where I can practice until it gets warm enough and I get brave enough to try swimming in the ocean (yikes).

I have my eyes set on the 16 Week Sprint 3x Balanced workout that I found on this website. If it ends up being too aggressive, I will switch to the 16 Week Sprint 2x Balanced workout. Either way, I will be tracking my training and progress in my training log here on this website. I'm excited to get started!

Thanks!
Elizabeth

Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full

Welcome Lisa and Elizabeth!!  I think that will round us out - so with that we are full!!!  I'll take a look at each of your logs too, but it looks like we have a great group here!

Megan asked a few questions - Lets start with the half IM and 1/2 marathon issue.  In prep for my first HIM, I ran 2 half marathons.  The first one, I was just trying to finish.  I got slower every mile after about 7 or 8.  It was more like a breakthrough workout - just to prove to myself that I could actually run that distance.   I know that both of the ladies looking to do a HIM this season have already run at least one half mary - THAT's A GREAT START!  I know quite a few people who went into the HIM without ever running a half mary!  The second one I ran, I had some good 10 mile training runs under my belt and my race strategy was to do a 10m run with a 5K race at the end.  At mile 10 I felt GREAT and picked up the pace.  Believe it or not, that last 5k was a 5k PR for me - faster than ANY stand along 5k I had done before.  So for the Half Iron, I also trained with several long brick workouts.  My hope was that I was constantly building fitness and that the run would be not so bad - that I could run an easy 10 miles and then finish with a nice, fast 5k - UMMMMMM no.  I started running somewhat easy and found that it got harder each mile.  The heat, the nutrition, the EVERYTHING was just not what I had hoped.  I finished it running - I didn't have to walk (although I admittedly came close) but I felt like I had been hit by a bus.  My run was SLOWER than my very first half mary and about 8 minutes slower than what I had wanted.  I wasn't necessarily disappointed that I was off the mark, I was disappointed that I didn't enjoy it because I was hurting so badly.  And the recovery was no picnic either.  My stomache was in knots for days...  That being said, If you are in it just to finish, or with a very reasonable goal - You'll be fine.  Understand that I am very competetive and that I HATED feeling like crap and seeing gals in my AG go by me with a smile...  Just so you know, a month later I ran another half marathon and was 19 minutes faster than my run split in my HIM.   As long as yo udon't expect to run it as fast as your open half marathon - you'll be fine!!  Also, we can look at some speed training.   I'll take a look at your log and training plan.  The speed training was the single most thing that helped me run faster this year.  I went from running 9' miles to 7:30 miles in an OLY tri.

OK Nutrition - just a comment here about what you had for your nutritional goals also.  I recently went in for a consultation with a RD and I had a resting metabolic rate, as well as a fuel test (where they measure the amount of fat and carbs you burn at different heart rates).  THe consultation was great and one thing I learned was that I was NOT taking in enough calories to support all of the stuff that I am doing.  But the bottom line is you have to also time your eating appropriately.  I was always snacking before bed - usually craving cookies or ice cream...  Here's what I got from the RD - eat more EARLIER in the day - get in a good 400-500 calorie breakfast.  It can be broken up - a cup of yogurt and a banana here then a PB bagel later with some milk.  ALWAYS eat enough before a workout and ALWAYS eat (or drink a glass of chocolate milk!) immediately after you work out - DONT wait to get home and make dinner.  Eat a protien bar, a recovery drink - SOMETHING as soon as you are done.  When you add calories, add things like fresh fruits and veggies.  Be careful to avoid processed foods and especially foods with PHO's (trans fats).  Anything is fine - in moderation.  The key is, once you take in enough calories DURING the day (and enough water) you might not get that craving for something before bed - those cravings are your body's way of saying - "HEY you didn't eat enough today" and to make it easier for you to consume something you usually crave something with lots of carbs and fat - like ice cream!

Yes, Caycee you're in too!!  Sorry!  I left you a message in your 'inspire me' on your blog.

Don't know if you all know this - lots of people communicate through the inspire me on your log page.  And to see someones log page, you can click thier little 'logs' at the bottom of thier post.  If you want to look at thier log frequently, you can add them to your friends list (on your training log page, top left box, there is an icon with a folder and a gear - this is the control panel - click it and you can add friends).  I've added all of you to my log page!  Then on someone elses training log, you can click the "inspire me" button and see messages from others and leave a message yourself.  Also, you can click on PM to send them a personal message which goes in your BT inbox!

To fill in on julia's questions:

Kersten - Married, no kids, lives near Milwaukee, WI.  Main goal for the season is a Half Ironman (HIM) tri, Marathon this fall.

Short term goal #1:  Get healthy.....get rid of this IT band issue, without losing my aerobic running base, and my 8:30 pace time.

Short term goal #2:  Although I'd like to say speed and decrease my run to an 8:00 mile pace, with #1, not thinking possible right now so I will go with increase my bike time to a 20mph pace?  Ugh.  Last season I was at an 18 maybe?  I don't remember, but I'd like to do 20 or better.  Nice round number.

Short term goal #3:  How short term?  3 months still, I'd like to be able to comfortably do 1.5 mile swim without stopping?  To get there I guess increase my swim time to 3x/wk.  Really I just started so I don't know. Plus, I'd like to find out more on nutrition.

Long term:  HIM end of June....being competitive...top 10 in my age group.  Don't know if that will be possible since I am hoping I just finish and I know a few people that I am competing against.

Strength:  Athletic....but I don't excel at any sport.  I have done well in my bike, but I wouldn't consider it anything great, my run is better than it was at an 8:30 half mary pace, some races swim I did great, my last race not so good.  I'm very competitive when it comes to race time....but not quite physically there.

Weakness: Definately mental.  Mental, mental, mental and then pushing myself hard enough.

What's your favorite workout:  I really enjoy swimming, but I also just became addicted to my long runs when the sun is out to light my face in the crisp air.  It makes me smile just thinking about it.  Least favorite...definatley the bike.

Alright, I couldn't sleep thinking about the ache in my hip and my class tonight.  I can't wait for Grad school to be done, I'll have so much more time!

Hi Julia,

Mike and I are from the Western Slope of Colorado. We have 2 kids 15 year old daughter and 8 yr old son. I am 5'7 he is 5'10, we areboth currently 45 lbs over weight. We have both started diet programs and exercise regularly. We have struggle with our weight ever since we have been married 15 yrs ago. We have a strong love for our family and each other. We do not want to be the "fat" parents. We want our kids to know determination and pride. You can talk to you are blue in the face, it will be your actions that get the point across.
Our goals :
1) Compete to complete a sprint Triathalon in June.
2) Lose weight/Tone up
3) Be Healthy
Our Strengths and weakness:
Mine would be my stubborness as a strength. When I want something I do what it takes to get it. As for my weakness besides Cake, I would say my inabilty to breathe correctly during exercise. I would be able to jog further if I could breathe. Favorite workout would be walks or equally aerobics classes. My least favorite has got to be any core work, anything o do with abs.
Mikes strength would be his will and weakness would be knowlege of proper exercise. Favorite work out would be upper body weights and least would have to be aerobic classes (uncoordinated)

Please consider us for your group we could use the advise and support.
Thanks,
Diane and Mike

I did not know about the 'Inspire me' button. How cool is that. I responded to your questions there.

I am originally from the Boston, MA area. Live just north of Seattle now. Married with 2 children ages 3 months (Kaia) and 2.5 years (Ian).

As far as goals and weaknesses, here are mine:

Goal #1:

To be able to:
Swim a half mile in 14 minutes,
Bike 12 miles in 34 minutes and
Run 5 k in 30 minutes

Goal #2:

Fit back into my clothes that have been gathering dust since the birth of my oldest who is going on 3.

Goal #3:

Get healthy and be a good role model for my kids. I want them to excercise regularly (and not be afraid of a little healthy competition) and eat healthy as the norm instead of the exception.

Weaknesses:

BOREDOM!!! I get so bored when I run. I can't seem to find good music and poop out after about a mile.

Hi everyone,

Julia I can't tell you how excited I am that I might get good at running/swimming/cycling. I'm very competitive but have had to let go of my competitiveness for 5ks and other races cause I never was good enough. The thought that I actually might be able to get fit enough to be pretty good is so exciting.

Goal #1 learn proper techniques

Goal #2 get fit enough to be fast

Goal #3 eat properly, fix my sugar addiction

Strength: biking
Weakness: running

Favorite Workout: anything with friends, I'm finding I love swimming
Least Favorite Workout: running

I hope to do the 1.5 IM program and have started week one as a prep. I'm entering my diet in the log as well. I have a heart rate monitor and would love to start using it to help me get super fit! I'd like to learn what times and distances i should be aiming for.

Instead of running, I've been walking on a treadmill with a steep incline. just for now

Thanks so much for mentoring Julia

I find I crave chocolate at night and end up eating several cookies. Thanks for passing on the RD's advice to us. I usually don't eat before or right after working out. I'll start planning my food better so I have something in my gym bag to eat.

francisjade - 2007-01-23 12:42 PM I find I crave chocolate at night....
I do too....afraid it isn't the same reason!  Mmmm chocolate!

On a different note, my chocolate binges need to be limited as I went for my first run since my race Jan. 14th....I wouldn't exactly call it a run, it was more like 3 steps ouch, can't run through the pain.  I wanted to throw a fit right then and there as I was looking forward to the fresh crisp air, and the addiction of running that I had been accostomed to over the last few months.  Instead I chokd back the tears, seriously, and headed back to make the call I didn't want to make for an appt. to a physical therapist.  I know people have been tellng me ART, but I couldn't give up 2 hours of driving to go to one in "my area".  The therapist I am seeing is suppose to be really good and I actually had talked to him earlier in the day to figure out what his approach might be.  He is nice enough to wave anything above what my insurance pays.  Thank goodness!  I guess I'll try it, it is close, convenient and i've heard good things about him.  Nonetheless, it doesn't make me feel much better about where that puts me right now.  I might just crawl under the covers and take a nap instead....maybe a hot cocoa too.

trYgrl - I am so sorry to hear about your bad run! That sounds so frustrating, knee injuries are a major fear of mine. Did you have IT band issues before your 1/2 marathon? I hope the physical therapist works out for you.

To give more of an introduction of myself: I am originally from Utah, but I moved to Washington about 3 years ago. No kids, boyfriend of 3.5 years who I try (usually unsuccessfully) to get to ride bikes or go to the gym with me.

My three goals for the next few months are:
1) Improve my swimming. I have really poor endurance in swimming, as in I could only swim 25m before stopping to catch my breath. I've been working on my form and swimming 3x a week, and I am up to 100m, hoping to build to at least 200m by the end of January, and 400m by the end of February.

2) For running and biking, follow my training plan and build volume. My plan is to start the 2x a week balanced sprint training plan in February, but I keep looking at the logs of all these crazy people training for HIM and IM and thinking I need to spend more time training!

3) Run a 5K on March 10th.

Strengths: eek, I don't know if I can call any of the three tri-sports a strength? It was running at one point. I am however extremely stubborn, so that can be my strength.

Weaknesses: Swimming is my weakest area. Also mental, as someone mentioned above - I tend to psyche myself out and not push myself out of my comfort zone.

Favorite workout: Strangely I have been loving the swimming! I love doing the drills, and feeling the improvement in my stroke, and being able to go further and take shorter breaks. Riding my bike outside is another favorite, but that was last fall when I was just doing fun easy cruises around the neighborhood, not really hard training rides.

Least favorite workout: Riding the stationary bike at the gym. I'm tall and they are only adjustable on the seat (not the handlebars), so I feel like my arms aren't far enough forward and I end up hunched over when resting my forearms. Also, definitely boring!

I'm glad to see most people are starting to log thier workouts and also putting avatar pics up!!

So it looks like we have a great, varied group here.  I've looked at all of your logs and blogged most of you about some of your specific issues.  Also, feel free to ask questions here any time or in my blog.  If I missed anyone's questions, let me know - sometimes I get side tracked... I'm sure everyon has figured this out, but balance is tough when you train, work, try to keep your family fed and happy...  Oh yeah, and obsess constantly on BT website

It's great to see that everyone has different motivations and different goals, but we are all enjoying some of the same things!

Julia

hey julia,
thanks for the input--i'm posting this here too, i'm not sure the best way to reply to your 'inspire' posts on my log since i don't know if you see that or not. yes, i was very happy with my swim yesterday. i will keep that in mind that it was my t-pace and will work off of that. i see a lot of people posting swim workouts and since i'm not a "swimmer" i have NO idea what they all mean!! i ddi get a book at the lib. called "the triath. guide to swimming" and it talks about some of those things in there. but i still don't really understand when i see someone's swim workout log with all those drills. can you explain some of them? or how to break up the workout timewise?
i do wear a HR monitor and that has helped a lot with my running. last year my goal at the 1/2 mar was under 3 hours. i did it in 2:49. I probably could have finished it 10-15 min. faster but i ran into an old friend of mine 1/2 way through and we jogged really slow and caught up on our lives! anyway, but i reached my goal of under 3 hrs. For the HIM, i believe too that 8 hrs is a very generous time frame... I went to the results of last year's pacific crest HIM and looked at my age group. I think the last place person in my AG finished in 8:32:35. being my competitive self, i decided i definitely wanted to finish before THAT!! Anyway, i kind of think as my training goes on (it is only january) i will be able to better gauge my time goal more realistically.

Ok, another question for you-- my husband is in a schedule right now that really prohibits me from being able to bike so i have been doing my bike trainings at the gym. my question though, is should i be doing my workouts on the stationary bike (has a nice computer, so i can see distance and time) or should i be using a spin bike, which i'm told simulates more of a road bike. i just don't know if those have computers that say your distance adn time, etc. (see, i told you i'm a #s person!! ha ha!)
ok, better go, thanks again for your input!!
