Subject: Optimal Running Temperature?

What is the optimal running temperature?  I used to think "the colder the better" for running as your body needs to get rid of excess heat but this morning I ran 10 miles at 34 degrees and it occurred to me that body was having to spend energy to maintain my core body temp.

From my experience, temps in the 40s are very comfortable and it seems I can run forever.

Thoughts/opinions/facts/data?

Somewere around 55-60 degrees, compensating for the wind chill factor.

50's and overcast for my best races.

75-ish. I can run comfortably at 90 as long as the sun is down. Anything below 60 is too cold. Anything over 100 is too hot.

I like the cooler Temperatures. I have no problem tossin on some running pants and some gloves and enjoying the temperatures in the teens but I'm prefer somewhere in the mid 30's to mid 40's especially if its sunny. I hate the heat and the humidity.

i don't think there is one answer.  Everyone has their own comfort zone.  I think the cold would start affecting your skin long before dropping your core temp while running.

personally I prefer 40's to 50's.

I also enjoy the cooler temperatures.  Anything below 30 is too cold and anything above 85 is just miserable.  But that is with Oklahoma humidity...

Personally, 40-50 degrees is perfect.

I think that 40F is the sweet spot.

I ran this weekend while it was 13F, not to mention that wind that put the temps below zero according to the radio.  I stayed really warm, maybe too warm, and sweated quite a bit.  Needless to say, it was not ideal.

I have really enjoyed the past few weeks of upper 40's low 50's this is perfect for me.  But I also enjoy upper 60s because of the added warmth.

I don't like the in-between...when you aren't certain what to wear.  Either layer up or take stuff off.  I just need to know so that I am comfortable running.

But who am I kidding?  I live in Georgia and trained for HIM this summer.  I postponed runs until after 8:30 because that was the first time it would dip below 90 and was 'manageable.'

Um, -25 C is not it (so the colder the better theory is definitely shot). I have noticed a definite reduction in performance/heart rate when temps start to get this low. As suggested I assume that the body is expending a lot of energy keeping warm. I do really like running in temperatures right around the freezing point though. Then I can wear just shorts and a t-shirt

I think it's best in the 40 - 60 range.  Once it gets around 90 (or 80s with humidity), it starts to get pretty unpleasant.  Cooler than 40 can also get unpleasant - I don't like having to wear so many clothes to be warm enough.

Depends on the times of the year acclimation wise.  In the summer here in FL a rare front brings what I'd call ideal temps & humidity to do long runs.  This time of year I'd say the 50-55 range is ideal.

I think the 30s are a decent temperature to run in provided your dressed appropriately. They aren't bad to ride in either. Each person has different tolerances and what may seem cold to you living farther south may be comfortable to me up north here.

Mike - you might want to clarify.  Are you asking people what temp they like to run in?  What temp they perform their best in?  Or if there are any theories or statistics out there on what THE best temp to run in is?  In other words, is there a temp at which you have the ultimate combination of best temp for the body to cool itself, take in oxygen, etc?  I THINK you are asking the last kind of question, but I'm not sure.

I run best when it's in the mid 60s...just warm enough that I can run without a shirt, but cool enough that I'm chilly when I step outside.

I ran 6 miles last Friday AM and it was 15 here. That is a touch chilly for my tastes, and I grew up in Michigan.

wow its amazing what living in different parts of the country can do to your ideal runnning temp. I think 70-75 is the best and anything below 55 feels very cold to me...

Just set a PR in the Half Marathon - 20 degrees F.

I like warm weather for shorter races...cold for longer.

I would say something above -8 F after wind chill factor. Apparently sports drinks become slush rather than liquid at that point. I think lungs also freeze around that temp judging by the wheezing sound that began around 1hr 45min into my workout Sunday morning. I'm going to retest this theory in -10F RealFeel this coming weekend though, just to make sure. Winter is so lovely.

70s. I'll put on the gear and run when it's snowing, but I love a good hard, sweaty run. Excessive humidity or temperatures make you feel as if you're battling the elements rather than your body's limits.

A perfect workout is to go down to Lake Michigan, run out and back along the beach, and swim afterwards: not a workout, just swim.

50-60 is good, 'cause I can still run in shorts and light shirt then.  But I like the upper 30's-40's a lot too and then when it's in the 10-15F range is good too because you're usually running on snow...nice and cushy!  Anything over 85-90 and I get grumpy!

It really is interesting to see all the answers....I see people here running in short sleeves and shorts when it is in the 40's......I am dressed like a polar bear when it is less than 60.......I love between 75-80......do fine in the heat even the humidity...run in the 90's all the time during the summer and love it. I much prefer warm weather!!!

Just read an online article last week about marathons (can't remember where at the moment) that listed the 45-55 degree range as the fastest.  It actually listed the expected increase in times for temps above 60 degrees.  If I recall the link, I'll post.

Personally, I find 50-55 to be the fastest and most comfortable.
