It is a matter of personal opinion and what you are used to.
But the ideal range is between 45-55 F and calm winds.

Let see, it’s currently 16 degrees, wind is 10mph, feel like 3 degrees (according to online weather) and I’m contemplating running home (5.5 miles) at lunch to walk the dog, then drive back to work.

 

 

 

 Not optimal running temp, and not sure if I want to find out if it’s tolerable.

Mike - you might want to clarify.  Are you asking people what temp they like to run in?  What temp they perform their best in?  Or if there are any theories or statistics out there on what THE best temp to run in is?  In other words, is there a temp at which you have the ultimate combination of best temp for the body to cool itself, take in oxygen, etc?  I THINK you are asking the last kind of question, but I'm not sure. 

 

Good point. I was actually thinking maybe there was a temperature that was empirically the ideal temperature for running but it is interesting to read the wide range of preferences. I 'spect running speed/effort/physical condition are factors.
