For a sprint of olympic distances do you carry a repair kit of tire patches on race day or chance it and take nothing. Is it just fix it and finish for the fun of it or forget about it and get a ride back? Just curious. I haven't carried anything in my races but wonder if I should.

I used to race Oly's "un-equipped" in the repair department. I figured if I flatted or had any other mechanical, my race was over. Now, I carry a mini pump, spare tube and levers (the tube and levers are under/in the saddle). My race will still basically be over, but at least I can make it back.

I don't carry anything because it takes me so long to fix a flat.  Something I probably need to practice more.  I'm thinking about carrying an extra tube and a mini pump this year because I think I've tried my luck too much.

Now matter the distance, I've always put in the training time to finish. Aint gonna let a flat  make all that training for naught.

Plan to fix the flat. It's tough walking along the road and watching everyone ride by when in just a few minutes you could be back up and going on your way.

I always carry my flat kit with me.  Although a flat might ruin my race, I still want to get home again.  Most of the local races I do don't have much in the way of SAG support and I'd rather not carry my bike back or wait for an hour or more hoping someone's going to stop by and help.

For any race I always have with me a small bag (like 3x4 inches) with a tube a lever and a CO2. For a sprint I am not too concern on finishing after a flat, but for a HIM and 'maybe' a OLY there is always a chance to catch up!

I'd rather finish than DNF because of a simple flat, way to much time invested in training!  I always carry two spare tubes, three levers, three 12oz CO2 cartridges and when training a small pump.  I can change a flat pretty quickly, had lots of practice on the old RB that always seemed to get flats.   Tire patches take longer, save those for repairing the flats when you at home.

I alway carry a tube/CO2/tire lever. I have flatted in sprint races before. It probably cost me 3-4 minutes ( I can change a flat pretty fast). A compromised time no doubt, but it saves a long, lonely, depressing walk or a humiliating ride in the SAG wagon. Why would you not carry at least a minimal kit?

I carry a kit on all my races.  I've used it before too, and still managed to finish in the top half of my age group.  Am I going to place if I flat?  Not likely.  But I'll be damned if I'm so prissy as to think that everything has to be absolutely perfect and that if I can't be the winner (metaphorically speaking, of course) I'm just gonna quit.

I flatted in my first sprint and I'm glad I had the stuff to repair it.  It would have sucked to have to walk the bike in at my first race.

anything i start i will darn sure finish.  there's no point in going out there if you plan 'B' is a DNF.  as a lot of people on here will say:

DLF > DNF > DNS

Dead F---ing Last is greater than Did Not Finish is greater than Did Not Start

I plan on contending for a top 10 in a sprint or oly one day but i could never concede total defeat for a flat tire that i can change in under 5 minutes.  BTW ditch the pump and get a CO2 inflater.   It saves scads of time over the pump.  and don't worry about patches on the race course bring another entire tube and swap them, patch the old one later.  there isn't too much time to look for the puncture.  DO take the time to look for a thorn in the tire.  if your ride is just jinxed and you get a second flat you can take the time to look for and patch that one, no since in rushing the second as your time for the bike is completely blown.

my two pennies...

Raced only twice - no tools - have never had or changed a flat.  Hey, I'm a beginner.  I recently got a tool kit and plan to learn how to properly use it.

I always carry an extra tube and cartridge on my bike, including during races.

I wouldn't place if I had to change a flat, but I'd rather finish a couple of minutes behind my goal rather than walk my bike back to the transition area and not finish at all.

I can't even fathom in the darkest corners of my mind quitting just because of a flat tire.  I also have no plans going in to races (yet) of winning.  I always carry 2 tubes, tire levers and this year I am replacing a pump with co2 cartridges.  I participated in 4 triathlons last year and in two of them I had flats I had to deal with.  One from a staple in the road and the other the tire was worn down from being on the trainer (my fault for not replacing).

I always carry a tube (or two depending on the length of the race) levers and a CO2 (or two). I rarely have ever repaired a tire with a kit on the road, that is for home when I have more time. I have never flatted during a shorter race, but did on the first IM I did. Sure it is much different losing 5 minutes over 112 miles than 12 miles or 40K, but you never want to DNF no matter what the excuse. Chances are if you change it quickly enough, you still won't be last. And even if you are, so what. Don't let a flat tire get in the way of a great run. Odds are, that slower bike time will only make you run even faster! Remember the main reason why we do races, for the challenge. A flat only adds to it, and to recover, makes the challenge that much more rewarding at the end. Even if it is a major pain in the butt!
