Crystal Lake, IL
Subject: Crystal Lake OWS in July

I'm posting this in WI and IL forums to gauge interest.

I know there aren't a lot of open water swims around so I'm promoting the one here in my town.  I did it last year and think it is a good race (really what do I know?) and the lake is pretty clean.  Whizzz and Coredump do it too and this year Schmize is jumping in.  You can do 1 mi or 2 mi distances.  I THINK it is on July 14 this year and the cost is usually pretty cheap.  I'll provide more details and a link when I find one.

I want to get together a list of people interested in this.  Because it is a relatively short event, compared to a tri, I thought it might be a good chance to have a summer BT get together.  I am thinking about inviting everyone over for a little grub and suds afterwards.  My house is a couple miles from the lake.  Last year I noticed a lot of people going for group rides after the swim.  That's another possibility.  We could possibly do both.  Bull Valley is a GREAT hilly area to ride and it is just a few miles north from the lake.

So help me gauge interest here - gimme your interest level.

Um, and this is all still unofficial as I have yet to run this past my lovely, adoring and supportive wife who sometimes lurks on BT!

Only 16 bucks? I'm in. I'll be tapering for Racine, so I'd also be up for a short ride afterwards (1hr).

I am totally in. I am planning on doing Big Shoulders so any OWS swims I can get in before that is good. Since I am taperbing for Racine also I might not be too interesting in group ride. Mostly because I do not think I could keep up. .

oh yeah I almost forgot as for the ride I have to see where I am at in June. Who knows I might be the bike master.

They also said wetsuit optional. It would be good pratice to use one for Racine but Looks like Big shoulders is basicly non wetsuit so not sure which way to go there.

Did this last year.  It was lots of fun.  Will most likely be doing it again this year, and probably riding afterwards too.  Bull Valley is lots of fun.

Wetsuits allowed so I'm in 8)

I would also be willing to do a ride after as long as there is somewhere to stash my bike during the event.

There is.  Like I said, lots of people bring their bikes so I don't think it's a big worry.  It's a private-gated town beach, and I'll probably have family there.  We can make a big cluster of BT stuff and they can probably keep an eye out for poachers.  You should still bring a lock, of course.

Hmmm... this is the same morning that I'd be heading up to PP for Danskin (I'm jockstrapping for some of my friends).... I wonder if I could talk them into doing the swim first and THEN heading up to Cheesehead Land?

I'm in! Smile

Last year I went sans wetsuit. I was just too warm. This year, I'll use the wetsuit. (!!)

And, as always, a little ride afterward sounds simply delightful.

i'm in for the swim and the bike, i live in Lakemoor (at least for now) and i ride in Bull Valley all the time, it really is a great area for riding. and as with everyone else i'm doing Racine, but will not be doing any tapering due to IMWI, so if others are looking to go for a bit long distance i would be more then happy to help with maping the area.

Wow, sounds like we're going to have a nice big group!  When it gets a little closer to July I'll post something to firm up plans.  I think I'll talk to the wife about having kind of an open house type thing that day.  That way those of us who are going to be at Racine (and all BT'ers, of course) can put faces with names.  And anyone who brings kids with to the swim can bring em by to play in the backyard too.

Well this should be fun.  2 mile swim in the morning.  Then a ride with you folks afterwards.  Then I'm scheduled for the annual late ride downtown at midnight till 6am Sat-Sunday.

Should be interesting hehe.

All you real swimmers skip the wetsuit for this anyway.  It's a pretty placid lake and temps are borderline for if you'd want to wear it.  I wore it and was not too hot last year but plenty did fine without them.

I think the same girl from the St Charles area has won it the last 3-4 years in a row.  Something to shoot for, Grant!

I swam without a wetsuit last year.  If I'd had it on, I think I would have overheated.  It's not a super deep lake, so it warms up pretty nicely during the summer.

Nice to see the IL thread is getting use, I haven't checked in a while.  I definitely need to do an event like this one and this is a most gracious offer from Hangloose.  I will have to see what I can do to fit it into the plans.
