Pre-race routine:

Woke up at the BT beach house earlier than I had planned but folks were up and getting ready, plus there was coffee brewing and it smelled too good to go back to sleep.

I hadn't been mentally prepared for this because we were focussed on the expo etc. This was a business trip and I was focussed on that. Consequently it was kind of odd when I found myself setting up my transition area and it hit me that "I'm about to do a Quarter Iron distance" triathlon. I wasn't stressed, just kind of amused "oh, look at where I am".

My legs were hurting from standing on the concrete floor all day on Saturday, but otherwise I felt good.
Event warmup:

Short swim to loosen up and get used to the water.

Swim
  • 22m 3s
  • 1056 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started in the middle towards the back. I was confident my swim would be better than in the past but I had no idea what that would mean in race conditions.

It was my first salt water swim and my first deep water start. I think I prefer the deep water start, it's fun. It's a great place to get ready mentally before the gun. At the gun I aimed for about 10 feet to the right of the buoy and kept a good line. Didn't get hung up at the turns. I just tried to concentrate on good form, not going too hard so I wouldn't blow up on the bike (a big concern given my lack of bike training) and sighting every 4-6 strokes.

I absolutely noticed that the more I concentrated on a good stroke, my speed went up and my RPE went down.

My best swim yet by far. The work over the winter paid off. Between the TI drills and all the help from dexter and rstocks3 my swim has improved way beyond what I ever expected.

Thank you Dud and Bob. You guys have been incredibly generous with your time and advice and I had a big payoff at this race because of it.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start a bit further up. I was held back quite a bit by the pack in front of me.
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Not a bad time and 14th in my AG. More of a jog than a run to my bike from the water.

A neighbor in the TA gave me some powder for my bike shoes. That's a new 'must-have' for the bag. Much easier to put them on.
What would you do differently?:

Run instead of jog out of the water.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 38s
  • 28 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
Comments:

My expectations for this were really low. I haven't been training on the bike and had no confidence about what I could do. This was also the first time I traveled to a race and reassembled the bike myself. Turns out I didn't pay enough attention and my handlebars were off center about 15 degrees. This made staying in the aero bars pretty uncomfortable for more than 10 minutes at a time.

The headwind on the out portion was pretty strong. A steady 16mph or so I would guess. My HR was in the low 160's to start and I wanted to keep it lower than that. I backed off and got it down to the low 150's and pretty much kept it there for the rest of the ride.

At the turnaround, me and a few other guys all yelled 'YEAH' when we got the tailwind. It was that dramatic a change.

This was a lot of fun. I love cycling.

It was really odd to ride for so long with absolutely no elevation change.

There were lots of flats on this course, particularly on one 3 mile stretch of the inbound part. One of the bike support guys I spoke with afterwards said a lot of the flats were caused by industrial staples and he suspected someone had sabotaged the course.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to my bike set up.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

In and out. I got my feet out of the shoes on the bike so it was pretty easy. I put sock on here but had them rolled up so they went on quick.
Run
  • 51m 20s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

This was fun. The aid stations were great, coming in to the BT aid station was just incredible. I stopped for maybe 20 seconds to visit. I hope the picture Laurie took of me and Ron came out.

I wasn't crazy about all the concrete on some parts of the course. It's painful for me to run on, I feel it in my back pretty intensely. The course was kind of convoluted with a lot of switchbacks which allows you to see alot of people coming the other way. This was great, because I got to see a lot of BTer's.

I didn't push this like I could have. I did turn it up a bit the last mile, but I was just having a good time. I didn't even realize how much until I came into the finish and the race announcer "described me as "coming in with a huge smile on his face..."
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the booth in the expo.

Event comments:

Races just don't get better run than this.

Things actually said to me in all seriousness before the race ( I'll let the people who said them own up):

"Can you look at something for me? I think I'm hung."

"Mike, can I pee now?"

Now, to everyone who helped at the aid station and the expo booth and just did whatever you could to help out and present BT to the world:

Thank you.

It can't be said enough.

I was so floored and humbled and grateful for all the help and the sheer enthusiasm. People would come up to the booth and ask a question and before I could say anything you guys were talking about the site and how great it is. You stood in the cold rain at the aid station, you hung around the expo when you didn't have to, the list goes on and on.

My favorite thing was to hear people talking about BT and saying "we" instead of "they" or "it". What I took away most from this weekend was a deep, deep appreciation of the people here, the community. Tri training can be a very solitary thing, but this weekend brought home just how valuable and powerful the shared experience of triathlon can be and how incredibly fortunate I am to be part of this community.

Again, thank you.

Great race! You kicked my tail! It was great getting to meet you this weekend and I will surely see you again at Longhorn in a few months. Even with the rain and monsoon, working the aid station on Saturday really was a blast. Might have been nice to be indoors with you kids but we had a great time! Thanks for everything Mike!

Damn, nice running considering you stopped and mugged for a picture at the aid station.

Nice meeting you, Mike.  We'll have to do it again sometime.

Great report Mike!! It sounds like you had a blast down there. I am definitely going to head south for a race next year, tell me which one it's going to be. The one with the most BTers will do just fine!

I am glad you felt as good as you did on the swim. It's only going to get better for you through the year! The work you've put into the swim has definitely paid off! Congrats!!

Nice job.....NOW GET OUT AND RUN, WE HAVE A MARATHON TO DO IN 3 1/2 WEEKS!!!

Excellent race considering the lack of training.

It was great getting to meet you and chat for a while; at the tent and in the water.

You've heard it hundreds of times, but thanks for all that y'all have done.

Now, if we can just find that guy with the empty staple sack...

Well Mike what can I say? I remember our conversation Saturday when you were telling me about your training and expectations for this race, and I think it's really cool you surprised yourself a little bit. That's always good to exceed your own expectations! It was excellent meeting you. Even though I wasn't planning to race Longhorn, I don't think I can pass it up. I'll see you there!

Nice job Mike, it has to be tough enough to do the tri when it is still pretty much winter up here and you can't get enough outside training in.  Add in the additional responsibilities of the expo and it had to be a real challenge.

Good job and good report!

Awesome job!  Both at the race and with the Expo.

Super times with your race, and I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.  As a matter of fact, you seemed to be having a blast the entire time you were in Texas!

Great meeting you, and I look forward to seeing you again at St. A's!

BT sure is something to be proud of, thanks for helping to make it such a great site.

Mike, great to see you again this weekend.

You had a great race.  It must be a great feeling to surprise yourself with how well you did.  You looked great on the course, especially when we were not prepared for the picture of you and Ron.

Great job, Mike!  I'm glad we got a chance to meet and talk.  Hopefully all the work chatting up the site will pay off.

You said you took it easy on the run and stopped for pictures but still managed sub-8 min miles?  Dang!

That's a pretty great race you put together, considering your pre-race expectations.    Definitely a solid swim time, so the swim work definitely seems to be paying off.

It was great to meet you at last, and hopefully can bring my bike ( or at least my running shoes ) next time I'm in Fairport.

Great job on the swim!  I loved that turn around on the bike too, it almost (almost) made all that headwind worth it.  Looks like you had a very solid race, good job!

I wish I coulda met up with you guys :-(  Maybe next time.

Sounds like a great race - and a lot of fun. BT is wonderful!
Your swim sounds really good - just thinking back to the description of a previous race when you didn't even swim the right course!!! - great improvement... and not bad on the bike for lack of training - I'm dead jealous of that speed and I HAVE been training
