I like to think that I'm the luckiest commuter ever, or just on a rock solid set of wheels. My commuter bike has never flatted while en route. I've had a few "low pressure" mornings where I need to do a little floor pump topping off before I ride, but even on horrible Boston area roads, I've never had an issue once I'm underway.

Best tips I have are to, yes, carry a cell phone, a transit pass (just in case), have a headlight recharger and spare blinky batteries at work, and ride defensively. Mike's bikes gives some good tips here http://mikesbikes.com/page.cfm?pageid=22&tipid=61but instead of eye contact with the driver, I'm always looking at their front wheels. Where they go, the car follows.

Be safe out there!

I did my second bike commute today, and I was much less tired when I reached work. I was kinda surprised because I haven't done a lot of biking lately because I'm focusing on jogging. We'll see how I feel on the way home.

I have been carrying two tubes, three co2 catridges, 2 sets of tire levers and a hand pump. Can you say "paranoid?"

Unfortunately I also forgot I can't bike to work when I'm on call, so that's going to take a few weeks out for me during the summer. I might not hit 40 times, but I'm gonna try.

Oops, I forgot to ask: Does anyone use a laptop sleeve/jacket? I don't want a full-fledged laptop bag -- just something to keep water out in case I get caught in the rain. (I don't plan to ride to work when it's raining heavily.)

I've looked at a few online, but I can't tell from the picture if they'd really be waterproof. I carry the laptop in a backpack for now.

ok i know i said id bike to work fifty times during this challenge, but after reviewing my schedule, 4 days on 4 days off and with 3 weeks of vacation in there im only going to work 52 days during the challenge . so im going to set my goal at 40 days. i will still try to ride everyday but there are those days when you are ill you know. i have no desire to ride to work with the flu or something.

Stupid question.... Don't you get all sweaty and mess up your clothes & stuff? My work doesn't have a shower and I wouldn't want to be all sticky and stinky all day. On the other hand I have a bike path that cuts straight through the city to my work about 13km.

I'm lucky in this regard. There is a shower at work and a gym across the street for days when the shower is in demand. We also wear hospital provided scrubs, so I don't have to worry about the logistics of bringing clothes.

I've commuted in places I didn't have these luxuriates, and it is more difficult to have to bring clothes and wash up in a sink, but I agree with Bopper - It's worth it.

I normally ride 24miles r/t, 12 miles each way. First ride is at 4AM, the great thing about this, is the ride home. I get to choose either a coast ride from York to Wells(Maine) or I can head up into the hills. This can increase my ride by what ever distance I choose. I am comfortable dealing with flats and minor mechanical problems, and as I ride in the early AM, I have adaquate lighting, headlight and a red flashing "amarda" on my back, if I happened to choose a longer than normal ride. I like to ride when all else is shut down, safer. I also wear a "RoadId"( RoadId.com )
I ride a road bike, and am 54 and have just entered my first Sprint Tri. I have run 5/10K's, but it has been a while.
I will be riding, hopefully 5 days, some will be just comute rides, others may be training, and intense.
I look fwd. to the next couple of months.

Luckily for me, there are showers at work. I haven't really thought about how I'd manage if they weren't there.

Could you ride the bike path at an easy pace that doesn't get you all sweaty? Find a gym close by to clean up in?

Any other ideas?

Day #1 of 50 -- who else rode in today?  Use your notes in the bike log section to keep track if you like, or count back through at the end of Sept...

And wait, don't we want to check in here on this thread every few weeks?

Or maybe Tim will be searching through our logs every once in a while?

Happy riding in any case, -Sunny

Monday I didn't have to go into base, no commuting. Today was a standard 8-5 day with great weather for riding. I think my head nurse is getting use to me biking. This is the first day I didn't get the safety lecture when she dismissed me for the day.

Interesting way to think of it, comet!  Only xx number of work days till Sept makes the summer seem short and sweet.  Today it rained in the AM, but is clearing a little now, so it makes me wish that I'd ridden in...drats.

I'd love to join this challenge, my commute is 6.5 miles each way. Definitely can extend the distance on the way home. My goal is 50. I commuted twice this week(26 miles total) , so 48 to go. Thanks for starting this challenge
