I know it is hard to believe with it with freezing temperatures and snow on the ground, but summer is just around the corner.  Once the kids are out of school, I will be able to ride my bike to work.

I will bike to and from work at least 50 days between May 1st and September 1st. Anybody else want to join?

I'll join this challenge!

I plan to bike commute for the first time tomorrow as long as I don't chicken out so this is perfect. I am starting at twice a week and hope to work up to three times a week (can't the other two days because of other activities).

I'm shooting for at least 40 times. I might wuss out some days if the weather is bad.

I love to ride my bicycle, and it'll be so much fun to be able to ride into work.

Of course, I'll have to hold off 'til I get a new bike, since my current one is totaled and won't be operational anymore

I'm IN. I've even already made a few practice runs I really try to commute from March through October, but the early DLS and really screwy work hours have not allowed me to get into a groove.

Put me down for 48 with the disclaimer that I may change jobs this summer which might take away my commute.

Thanks, Tim for doing this again.

Sounds like fun. I'm in. I rode my bike to work last summer, but only (on average) once a week. This will definitely encourage me to ride in more often. I'll try for at least 50 days, as well.

Oh, I have an idea for people wanting to participate in this challenge, but feel that work is too far to commute to by bicycle alone. I hope that this doesn't violate the rules or spirit of the challenge, though, tim_edwards.

This is the idea:

if you live so far away that you can't possibly ride to work (like say if you lived 30 miles away from work...) then how about loading your bike on your car, driving about halfway, and then unloading your bike to ride the rest of the way?

You still get your exercise (bicycle riding workout) and you also still save on gas compared to people that drive the entire way to work (but not as much as the people able to do the entire distance on bike, I admit).

Alternatively, if the buses in your area have bicycle racks, you can take the bus instead of the car for that halfway ride

Good ideas, Bopper & DBear.

Any variations that make this work for you are welcome.  Just set a goal for a number of rides (round trip, one way, park & ride, whatever)

The point of the challenge is to substitute biking for driving as much as is practical given your situation.  Use a little less gas, get a little more exercise.

PS - A friend here in town was running to work last summer. If that's feasible for you, feel free to join in. (Heck, if you can swim to work, welcome aboard!)

I want in for 50 days as well.  My work is 16  miles one way, so round trip that is a pretty good day of riding.  If I am feeling tired, I reserve the right to count a few days of riding 3 miles to catch the bus, or 6 miles to catch the train.  I might also run to the bus a few days as well.   Swimming to work, would involve a fair amount of sewage, so that is out

I love this challenge. I have a 6-7 mile commute depending of the time of day. At my last job, I only had a 3 mile commute and rarely ever drove. I may even try running to work. I'm all for more cyclist on the roads both for the environmental and health benefits and for the increased awareness of motorist.

If I had a 3 mile commute, I'd run it. 3 miles is way too low for a bike ride into work

I have a 15-18 mi commute each way. My cars are gas pigs and I always go somewhere for lunch when I drive. I figure I save $5 (about 2 gal of gas) a day that I commute. The money I save in gas goes to race entry fees

DBear - 2007-04-17 11:35 PM If I had a 3 mile commute, I'd run it. 3 miles is way too low for a bike ride into work

Too low for a ride?!  It's perfect for a ride.  No sweat, nice breeze, and no need to shower when it's said and done.  For me, a 3 mile run necessitates a shower, and that's not an option where I work, just 2 miles from home.

I'll ride 50 days with you Tim, and thanks for re-instating the challenge.  I enjoyed it in 2006!

As for the log, I put it under bike miles/time but usually note "commuter miles" since I ride an older, heavier SS bike for it.  I also note the ride # __ of 50 planned, so I don't have to tally it all up at the end.  Last year I recall making my goal, but just barely, and it was fun to see ride #40 of 50, #41 of 50 etc. count it down for me.

I just want to remind everyone to make sure and leave a little early to allow time for bike problems.  Make sure you have a way to get to work if things go wrong, i.e. money for a bus/train or a spouse that could pick you up.  You don't want to get in a lot of heat at work for a flat tire because you didn't have a spare tube.

I plan on starting my commutes next week.  This week it dropped back to winter weather.  I thought it was supposed to be april showers, not april snow and freezing rain!

I'm completely paranoid about flatting. I keep 2 spare tubes AND a patch kit. I also keep 2 spare tires at work so if I flat going to work, I'll still have 2 tubes ready.

Finally, I'm sure you all know this, use a hand pump and save the CO2 for race day.

I had one misty morning, but I did manage to commute 3 days this week.

Heh - a few hard learned lessons:

 - If you use CO2 cartridges, practice with a couple before you need them on the road. It's worth the expense.

-  Gas station air pumps don't fit on presta valves. (duh, should have figured that out before carrying my bike a mile.)

-  Your toolkit is not complete without a cell phone.

Luckily, this experience was gained on the ride home, and my brother happened to be in the neighborhood.

Challenge starts in 9 days!
