So for the carbo load for pre race dinner, what is your favorite?  List meals and even recipes for your best carb rich pre-race dinner.

Homewrecker from Moe's (it's a burrito). Spaghetti with meatballs is a close second.

First of all, ... the carbo loading meal doesn't seem to work for me...

After about 15 plus years of carbo loading with different foods... I made a complete turn around and started using a high protein and fat diet the evening before a race (specially IM distances). This made a huge difference in not only my performance but also with my recovery.

At any rate, most still hang on to the carbo loading pre-race meal... but, a recent research seemed to agree with my approach of protein loading (i.e. specifically red meats or foods with high iron content) as being more effective. Sooo, I guess my protein loading approach for the past 5-6 yrs may have some validity after all.

In either case... whether it works or not for some... I think a big steak dinner tastes better than a bowl of spagetti/pizza/oatmeal/etc.

I have my first race on sunday and as it kicks off at 7:30am my evening meal the night before will be important. Carbs do work for me and protein is really important as it is the building blocks for repairing damage to muscle fibres caused by exercise. So I am intending to have plenty of both, the protein to help repair for exercise up to the event and prepare for the demands of the race and then carbs for glcogen stores and engery.

So for me the ideal meal will be something like scrambled egg whites with plenty of green salad and wholemeal toast, or chicken pasta salad.

My morning breakfast at around 5:30am will either be oatmeal with sliced banana or peanut butter on wholemeal toast - depending which is easiest to get down, I'm quite small so I'll probably only need a gel between teh bike and the run (its a sprint) so other than that I shouldn't need any more fuel.

This is my theory at the moment but I will find out whether is works on sunday!!!

At our house its bow tie pasta with diced onions and tomatoes with a grilled chicken breast. No salad prerace and no heavy sauces.

For breakfast I usually go for eggo waffles with a banana.

Fazolis for lunch the day before, usually alfredo with brocolli and chicken, some sort of pasta at home the night before, and at about 4am race day, I have a toaster waffle with peanut butter and a banana, and a glass of juice. It works well, and I have tons of energy to get through a sprint and not have to worry about nutrition, only hydration.

Oh, yeah, I forgot, I eat a large Pepperoni Feast Pizza from Pizza King by myself after the race. It's a 1# of diced pepperoni and 1# of cheese on a 14" thin crust pizza. I get my grease fix for the week that way, and it is my reward for hard training/racing in the weeks prior.

pizza.  Oh wait, pizza is my favorite dinner any time.

I don't eat anything different than normal which is a "balanced" meal.  A meat, a starchy carb and a vegetable.  I just try to stay away from super spicy stuff, but other than that I just eat normal which can include pizza!

I have found a sweet and sour chicken rice box at Wal-Mart that has 480 calories, 101g of carbs, 15g of protein and 650mg of sodium. I eat that the night before and when I wake up I'm supercharged...Plus it only cost 2 bucks.

Pasta with "frankenstein" sauce -- where you take a can of a spaghetti sauce and add in extras like sauteed onions, garlic, sausage, canned tomatoes, wine, mushrooms, etc.

Lots of water and homemade sports drink.

I've got a sensitive stomach, so I error on the side of caution before races.  I avoid veggies, garlic, Mexican food, dairy, eggs, and easy on spices.

-2 days before a race I eat Spaghetti Turkey Bolognese...recipe I got out a Weight Watchers cookbook.
-Day before lunch I go with a Chicken Cheesesteak no veggies or cheese…probably not the healthiest but it’s become a tradition.
-Night before race – grilled chicken breast and instant rice pilaf

Beer.  Always have beer.  Other than that, usually some sort of pasta dish.

Different people take to pre-race meals and carbo-loading differently.  Additionally, the science behind it has been changing.  I've found that a shorter but higher intensity run the day before, followed by some sports drink works best for me.  The meal ends up being unimportant.

Complex carbohydrates; like whole wheat pasta, with veggie sausage (made from soy) for protein. Easy to digest. Fajitas are good too because you can put whatever you want in them, including some soy-based fake chicken strips to add protein (or the real deal if you prefer) -- And avoid things you don't want, like hot salsa or refried beans.

Pizza is the best post-race food; oh, and chocolate.

The experts that I have talked to recommend eating anything before your race/endurance activity 2-3 hours before you start. I have followed that advise with great results. I just bring nutrition drinks with me to sip during the event.

At this point, the entire carbo loading concept has been shown to be more myth than science. The reality is you should eat whatever it is you would normally eat on any given day. The night before the race is not a time to try somehting new, just do what you would under normal circumstances. The week leading into the race, sure, have some more carbohydrate like pasta , rice, potaoes and add a little extra sodium and lot's of water. Otherwise, just be normal.

This is one of those People Overthinking Stuff things I try and advocate against.

I've only had to carbo load my half marathon last October, and here's what I did:

Lunch the day before: chicken alfredo with broccoli

Supper the night before: steak and eggs, mashed potatoes, biscuits, green beans

I performed wonderfully at the half mary and had no loss of energy.  My race recovery meal was a HUGE bowl of chicken alfredo at Fazolli's.

Had In-n-out several days in a row before IMAZ, does that count? It really is my favorite, well, maybe behind pizza. It was literally right across the street from the best western I was staying at. I couldn't resist.

They used to have one of those 1/2 block from my work off the UW campus. Too bad it's gone, but, there are a number of other places down on State St., like Chipotle's.

Sushi and a lot of it. Have no idea if it's right or wrong for nutrition but all that rice and soy sauce has to be good for something.
