Pre-race routine:

Ate tuna sandwich at 4:30, changed clothes at work and drove to race site.
Event warmup:

11.65 miles in 37 minutes (18.9mph)
Bike
  • 24m 20s
  • 10 miles
  • 24.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty demoralizing to average 24.5mph and have the guy who started a minute behind you pass before the turnaround. Equally demoralizing to see your average drop from 24.5 to 24.2 in the 20 feet it takes you to turn around.

Still, not a bad ride. There was some wind out there but it was hard to tell where it was coming from, guess it was predominantly a crosswind. Averaged 24.2 through the turnaround, then 24.8 the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It's still early in the season, I'm still carrying Christmas baggage, but lost only 20 seconds from last July, when I was in peak condition. My goal is to average 25 on one of these later this year.
Post race
Warm down:

Rode about two miles, made sure I wasn't going to spew, then waited for results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Little hill, crosswind, fat behind. Only two that beat me were a 25-yo Cat 2 racer (26.6mph avg.) and a 15-yo who has real potential to be Cat 1 or better (25.75mph avg.). Add their ages together and you still come up ten years short of where I am.

Event comments:

Low-key, informal monthly event put on by the LBS. Fun, good way to test yourself.

Nice ride!  I did one last Wed. night also; there's nothing to compare with that eyes crossing, lungs burning feeling when you cross the line.
