Back to the electrolyte thing. Why is it that I can drink Gatorade all day on the bike but when I run, the gatorade bloats me. But I can drink water with no problems.

I'm guessing it's the sugar. But I can do clif shot bloks and water and I'm fine. Weird.

I'm also the type to not hydrate enough. I took a cup of water and one gel during mile 4 of my half mary in Feb and that was it because it caused me to cramp. Ran the whole thing without anything else.

Drinking too much of a diluted energy substance can cause me to bloat as well.  That's why I like the concentrated structure of my current nutrition plan.

The only time that I ever tend to hydrate enough is when I have an aero-bottle in front of me.  Then, I can sip and sip and sip all day long.  If I have to change position or reach for it, I tend not to drink enough.

I have learned that setting myself with a specific interval to drink helps with the discipline.  On my long rides, I found that taking a squirt of nutrition on the 10' mark is good for me.  I get enough fluids, but don't feel like I'm bloated.

How's training going for everyone?

My hip flexors and hammies are sore. I'm trying to get a massage scheduled now....

My coach gave me today, wed, and friday off with easy workouts on thursday and saturday, but cranks it back up with a long ride on Sunday with 2 X 30 min tempo intervals.

My neck is sore too for some reason. Weird. How are you feeling Shaun?

The hamstrings are fine, but the quads still feel like someone broke a bunch of 2x4s across them.

Guess I know now that riding on a tri-bike really can stress the quads.  I pushed quite a bit on the bike but it felt really good at the time.

Suzanne:  How do your legs feel today?

Once again, nice job Suzanne and Shaun!  As for me... kind of stuck in a rut.  I am 8 weeks in and 4 weeks to go.  I feel like I need to start getting a some high intensity workouts in the next two weeks so that I can taper off the last week.  I just don't feel like I have it in me.

I am liking my runnersworld plan.  I have used it before and enjoy it because it paces me and gives me milage.  I have a tempo run tonight that I am excited to do... its been a while.  short run- 5 miles with 1 warmup, 3 at 8:00 min and 1 cool down.  I also got a pair of Newton running shoes yesterday.  They were a b-day present to myself.  I like them a lot!!

Anyway, I just need to stay forucsed and remember that its my first tri and I am well prepared for it as is.  Just need to stay healthy

I can't wait to hear how those Newtons feel when you run. Theoreticlly, they sound like a great idea, I just wonder if in real life they FEEL good.

Does anyone use these during the swim?  I'm contemplating trying them but I don't know if they would make things more difficult for me than they already are.  I find that as I concetrate to blow out through my mouth, there still seems to be more air in my sinuses that need to be expelled.  Right now, I try to give one forceful blow out through the nose just before I turn up for air.  I was wondering if a  nose clip would releave that issue for me.  Thoughts??  Anyone??  Bueller??

I'll focus on it and see what I do tomorrow while I'm swimming, but normally, I inhale by opening my mouth and then exhale through my nose.  If all of the air is not expelled before i'm about to roll up for the next breath, I'll blow the rest of it out through my mouth.

Whenever I don't blow out through my nose, I get water in my sinuses and end up sneezing for half a day.

I, too, blow the majority of my air out through my nose and the last little bit through my mouth before taking a breath.  If I feel like water is getting in my nose as I swim I just exhale lightly.  I find that this keeps it out.

Swimmingly...I must say  (had to use that).  I'm feeling desperate to kick it up.  I feel like I should be doing more.  However, need to ease up until my sciatic (disk) issues calm a bit.  Looks life weekend plans are changing so I won't be getting on that 5k on the Cape.  However, I'll be traveling north where the water is still around 55 degrees for an OWS and some serious sea kayaking.  Only issue with swim is that I left my brand spanking new QR Quick John on the Cape last weekend. I'm really psyched to get in the water with it (however unflattering it is). Also hope to get in a good bike this weekend.  Aside from that...status quo.

BTW...love the doobie doobie doo...a close buddy of mine and I use that when referencing the biscuits!

Doing good after a sort of off week.  Can't believe my first tri is coming up soon.  I am still stressing a little about the swimming but just keep telling myself that if I stay calm and go at my pace I will make up the time in the bike and run.  contemplating doing my first one in a wetsuit (bibjohn not full) for added 'security' but I know it will eat into a lot of my T1 time while I get out of it.  watcha ya'll think?

I wouldn't. If the water temp is below 78 the race is wetsuit legal. 78-83 you can wear a wesuit but you aren't eligble for awards (and I don't think you get ranked, either). 84 and above no one can wear one. At my last tri the temp was 84, so no one got to wear one. What's the water temp where you are racing? It may not even be allowed.

I would say that if the race is 750m or less and you feel like you can swim that distance without much trouble (based on your workouts), I would say go without it.  Even if the water is technically wetsuit-legal, you'll be able to make up your slower swim time by not having to struggle to get out of a wetsuit for a minute in T1.

I wore one on my first race (400m ocean swim) and realized afterwards that I could have done without it.  Since then, I've only worn one in olympic or longer distances.

thanks.  Water temp was in the mid 70's for last weekend's race.  I see from the race photos that there were quite a few people sporting wetsuits.   I guess its just a nervous thing for me since I am not a strong swimmer.

OK... I feel better now.  I swam my first 550 yards (0.3 mile) which is the distance in my first tri.  I actually felt really good and knew I could go further.  Time was slow (11:22) but I focused on an easy stroke and easy kick.  I think I have been wearing myself out too fast by kicking too hard.  This is definitely a milestone for me considering I couldn't even swim 25 yards when I started 2.5 months ago.

I know exactly what you're talking about.  About a month before my first tri, I couldn't swim more than 75yds without having a panic attack.  I was staring at a 400m swim and was completely freaked until one day when I just pushed myself to swim and swim and swim.  After that, I knew it was simply mental and I had the physical capabilities.

At the end of the day its all mental.

it is amazing how much of this is mental.  Even though the body is physically capable it still doesn't like to get out of its comfort zone.  You always have to force it with either a spur or a carrot to get it out of that zone and acheive something greater.
