Heat like that? That's a beautiful cool Texas day! I'm normally running/riding in 95+ weather with a heat index of 100+. So far, gatorade, gels, and bananas have done me well. I'm currently researching the electrolytes for longer distances but haven't needed them yet.

I dont mind running in the heat, but my sweat rate is over 6lbs of water above 80 degrees, so makes self supported stuff tough.  Thats my huge achilles heel it seems.  I would rather run in -10 if its long stuff.

Are you to the point where the bike to run doesnt really bother your legs? I think I can actually run faster off the bike now than from a cold on start.


I'm not there yet. I need to start doing a short run after every ride. I think it will help the muscle memory.

My legs are still jelloy for a little while during the run but I have found that pushing the turnover on my run a little faster than my norm helps get the muscle memory working again within a short distance (.1-.2 mile). The couple of bricks that I did in the beginning of the month/end of Aug. at Oly distance really proved this for me.

The main concern is that I have not done much interval training nor hill repeats. It is one of the things, like the run after rides, that are noted for next year. And with having a 200-500 or more extra feet of climbing I wonder how it will effect the sticks. Make sense?

Never did electo tabs or salt tabs. I always worry about putting to much in the system and getting ill or having my touchy GI system start to revolt.

I definately do not sweat like you. My sweat rate over a 8mi/1hr run was 2-2.5 lbs. So I guess I really don't sweat that much comparitively.

It is something that I am definately going to look into since my plans for a HIM next year seem more and more realistic.

And I think you deserved that stout... If I ever see/meet you the next one is on me.

What kind of cadence are you riding at?  I found that in the early days I was a grinder but having become much more of a spinner with high cadence (prob around 95-100 most of the time), my legs started getting under me quicker and now there is very little if any real transition it seems.  If a gear feels tough, have no hesitation in shifting to one that feels comfy and spin away.  There is a time and place for doing hills and pushing bigger gears to build strength, but if you can get it to where you are able to spin away in a race, your run legs will thank you.

If you dont need em, ya dont need em but generally in hotter conditions or if cramps are an issue, then they are a godsend.  I think I finally found my solution to cramps but still gotta find the magic amount of hydration after hitting the port o let 7 times on the mary Sunday.  Still, better than the other end of the spectrum in dehydration which I know all too well.

I ride in the mid 90's and shift down/up depending on cadence. I just really have not worked on my running cadence but noticed if I increase my turnover from my normal running stride the muscles respond/recover faster.

I also wonder if the legs are fussy since I don't ride aero or have a tri bike (geometry helps you come off the bike ready to run a lot better than road specific set up).

I will definitely be back.  I am naive enough to think that I can race that distance someday.  I am taking next year off of IM cuz there may be some changes outside of tri life.  Plan is to do two halfs next year and fill in with some other races, maybe a bike tour or two, maybe a mary or 50k.  Off season plans are rehabbing my shoulder, finally taking swim lessons to refine some things and strapping myself to the computrainer.  I also hope this winter and next year to help my wife progress in the lifestyle.  She is doing her first du this weekend.  I have also thought about getting into coaching, but not sure about that.

I had a good ride last night with the new cassette on my bike. Same loop as last month but this time 1.2 mph faster on average with my heart rate lower by 3 bpm (I think it was lower than that as my HR monitor went to 240 a couple of times). The new cassette allows me to stay in the big ring more and still save my legs in the hills. No soreness in my legs today; a little fatigue but not much. It's nice to see progress. I just don't know if it's due to an increase in fitness or the cassette. Or both.

My bike is originally set up with 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, & 21 (8 speed). I was getting worried about the initial climb from the lake for the Oly (900 ft in the first 3 miles). The rolling hills were killing me with what I had. I took the 12T sprocket from the old, added it to the new and now have 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 & 26. Two new gears in the low end. $18 total with shipping from Ebay.

Yep, those last two gears will definitely help.  I switched to an 11-26 from 11-23 in prep for the hills of MOO and helps tons.  I tried to keep the 23 in my pocket in training so that race day it was a nice little treat.  Worked like a charm and smoked the climbs.

Uh-oh.... She's catching the bug eh?

My wife has actually started talking about maybe picking up recreational cycling... Hybrid/MTB stuff. She still thinks my workouts are completely nutso... but she likes the end results. I hate to think what she is going to say next year with images of a HIM dancing in my head.

No change yet, maybe if Santa was delivering a new carbon K-factor to P3C would the change be waranted.

We have a race company in Ohio that does a series as well. It is 9-10 sprint and oly races from May to September... June, July, August and September is 2 per month. So who knows. Maybe I do the series as a build and hit a HIM two years from now.

The question I'm pondering now:

In June, I won a Giro Advantage 2 Aero Helmet. It should be delivered shortly (long story, don't ask). My training ride average speed is 17.5 mph. My last sprint (9/16) average speed for 18 miles was 19.8 mph. I have an Olympic distance tri coming up. This will be my longest Open Water race to date and should be wetsuit legal. I do not have a wetsuit.

Should I:
a. Keep the helmet and use it.
b. If my local shop will let me, "return" the helmet to them and make up the difference for a wetsuit.
c. ?

My thoughts are to sell the helmet and use it to get something else... be it more gear or a wetsuit.

Wetsuits are f'ing expensive so that is what I am saving my pennys for next

Sorry, post IM funk settling in.  I have read an aero helmet can be as effective as aero wheels *if* you hold the position all the time.  A wetsuit can help tons especially for weaker swimmers.  If you are not comfy in OWS, I would suggest the wetsuit option if you can get a credit.

Sorry to hear about the funk, but it seems to be pretty understandable. You've been training for a while now with one goal out there and now 'poof' you've accomplished that goal. How do you beat the funk?

Congratulations on the b-day. No kids in my world yet. Still kinda freaks me out to think of myself that way (ie. grown up/DAD).

You decide what you are going to do with the helmet yet?

Oh, and I'm freaking sick. I think/pretty sure caught the bug from my wife. She's a teacher (7th grade) and harbinger of that is kiddie funk. Does she get sick at the beginning of the school year?? No, because she has the immune system that would be the envy of the CDC. Anyway end to my rant. Now I am off to finish submitting my sick day to work, popping some cold medicine and going back to bed.

Enjoy the weekend gents (and kanders, but I don't think she's been on for weeks now)

I am sure it just needs some more fun workouts to remedy it- group rides, trail runs, spin class here and there.  Gonna get the ipod working again too.  Its just hard to turn off some intense azz focus like that.  I am getting over it a bit but still will be sleeping in more a few days a week

Hope you feel better soon.  I am dreading the winter as it means who's sick with what today pretty much.  With four kids, they bring home everything and pass it on.
