How do you rank yourself, if "1" is as flaming liberal as you can get, and "10" is as staunchly conservative as you can get?

Once I get a bunch of responses, I'll apply some fancy statistics and we can really see exactly how BT leans.

This is tough, because it depends on the issue...I think there are many that are liberal in some areas of their life, but quite concervative in others....

Yeah, I agree with RW.

I am fiscally pretty conservative but socially very liberal. My views do not fit neatly into the old left/right paradigm.

Note: Being fiscally conservative does not mean I buy into the Economic policies of an administration that has labeled itself as "Conservative".

I echo what woof said.

To be honest I agree more with the Libertarian ideals than anything else.

Most people will say this. That is why our current political paradigm is flawed.  It also explains why fringe groups are so powerful in influencing elections as the true majority gets divided on non issues.

Same here. I used to vote Republican and was actually registered as one because I agreed with their economic policies, but I've become totally fed up with the party being taken over by those who would take away personal freedom and push religion. I am now registered as an independent and I call myself an independent/libertarian. I guess some would call us moderates.

I agree with this, too.  I don't think it's very easy to give myself a number.  All of the online political quizzes tend to put me in the Libertarian bucket.

I put 2, because I read The Socialist Worker years ago and thought it was bullshit. I thought that if I had to believe their crap to be considered a socialist, then I am clearly not one.

Also, I think unions can go too far, government should think more carefully about taxation and not everybody needs a government department to help them through whatever problems they may be having.

OTOH, I believe the entitlement of the corporation over individuals is the single worst thing that society could allow. I think we as humans waste our resources and often use rationalizations to justify it. I think we, as a society, have forgotten that society is made up of people, so we love things more than we love ourselves and each other.

I really wanted 5.5 right in the middle, so I had to make a decision and picked 5.  I lean more liberal, whatever that means anymore.

I know...I thought about making it 1-9, or 0-10. But I thought it be more fun to force people not to completely fence sit.

I rated myself a 4.

I am quite socially liberal.

Tending to be a bit more conservative in regard to financial issues. Money mouth

Not to hijack or anything, but can someone please explain how someone can be a social liberal and a fiscal conservative? The two wouldn't seem to be able to coexist. Can't say we want social programs, yet have not spend the $$ to support them. Help!

Jim I think this is a bias poll since the thread was created by a liberal.  Did George Soros fund the project?

I subscribe to that philosophy.  I consider myself liberal on social issues but my approach to budgeting and fiscal policy is conservative.  But I don't equate being a social liberal to we should expand social program.  For me, it isn't necessarily spending on social programs, it is spending efficiently on social programs and other aspects of government that make me conservative.  Too many people think politics/government is a cut and dry or black and white issue.  I think a lot of grey exists.

Just because you believe there should be some sort of safety net doesn't mean you think every government program is a good idea or that the govm't shouldn't be responsible with the way it spends our $.

Your confusion is based on the definition of "social." I define "social" as "personal freedoms and choices." This includes free speech, religion, stuff like that. What you call social programs I call "entitlement" programs (welfare, Social Security, etc.) and I place those under fiscal policies because they require an expenditure of taxpayer funds. Hope that clears things up.

Social liberal + fiscal conservative = libertarian (using the above definition)
