Just remember to swim hard, bike hard and run hard and you'll do fine! Good luck and can't wait to hear your race report.

Graycat.. can you post a link to the Triathlon you are doing? Good luck this weekend. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Post your July totals:

July's totals:

Bike:

20h 44m 16s  - 351.6 Mi

Run:

17h 17m 43s  - 111.2 Mi

Swim:

5h 46m 32s  - 17790.42 Yd

assesment: A good month. If you take mid July.. say July 20 through Aug 20th, that will probably be my core peak in terms of totals. Still, July was no slouch. I am feeling some fatigue, but overall I am well on course for Moo.

Had my Metabolic testing done..

results per tester:

Anarobic Threshold: 121

Lactate Threshold: 154

Vo2: 60    ml/kg/min

Vo2Max HR: 181.

Predicted HR 206.

Was told I have a really strong Aerobic Engine. My base is huge, and I am where I need to be at to hit my IM targets.

The Vo2 number of 60 is really good. I was happy with it. I hit 64 as a high, but did not sustain it for 15 seconds. The number 60 is a rolling average.

sure thing. here's the race's home site - http://www.thelondontriathlon.com

I'm doing the Olympic on Sunday morning so it should be fun. My younger brother is going off in the first wave at 0630 and i'm in the 0700 wave with the deal that if I beat his last year's time, he'll be waiting for me with a beer lol

This weekend should be fun as:
a) it's my first OWS
b) it's my first Oly and second tri ever
c) I reckon I'm on the cusp of going under my 3 hour target
d) I've had a shocking couple of weeks training due to work etc
e) my A race
f) the race that started me off on this whole triathlon journey

I was just thinking that a year ago I was looking forward to watching my bro compete. It was whilst watching that I thought to myself "I think I could do that" and handily someone dared me too lol Not long after watching that triathlon almost a year ago i decided to get a bike and try this cycling lark and the triathlon was still a far off dream.

makes me think what I've done over this year and the 9 months or so of training.

Hey folks,

I am back. I ran for the first time today after pulling a calf muscle back in June. Tried a couple of times to run on it, but too early. Ended up re-injuring it. I decided to basically take the month of July off. Everything seems to be working fine albeit tight and loss of fitness.

I have been watching the posts and now want to engage more often with you all (or as they say here in Mississippi "all y'all").

Any advice about how to get back into the saddle after being off from an injury would be greatly welcomed!

Hey Ron (Atl Runner) I would be interested in how you went about getting your analysis done. I have been trying to figure out who would do it without any success. Can you tell me who typically provides this service? If I did a cardiac stress test, would it give me these numbers?

July's totals:
Bike:11h 45m 47s  - 147.62 Mi
Run:6h 12m 18s
Swim:9h 15m 06s  - 13369.47 M
Home Improvement:2h
Skating:1h
Softball:3h
Walking:30m

July was the first month where my totals for each sport weren't higher than the previous months.  The overall total still saw an increase, but it was more spread out so my bike time was less this month than last.  That makes sense though, because I have increased my running time hugely, so there has to be a decrease somewhere else.  I nearly doubled my run time from June!  I've also seen huge improvements....I started the month with mile times usually in the 14's, and now I'm running consistant 12's.  On my last few runs I've actually been getting in the low 12's!  (Yes I know that's still painfully slow, but it's big for me!

I don't have internet at home right now so I might be MIA for a while.  Don't think I'm ignoring you all, but the times I have online are barely long enough to read email and update my log.  I'm still "listening" though.

Bill.. welcome back. Start climbing that fitness ladder now, and in a few months you will be right where you want to be.

As far as the analysis goes, you can generally find it at one of three places..

1. Coaching Buisnesses. Specific to Coaching Cyclists, runners, triathletes, etc..  I know of two in the Atlanta area that both administer the test. You'll just have to look in your area and start calling some local coaches. I am sure one can point you in the right direction.

2. Heart Doctor.. while a cardiac stress test will not give you what you need, chances are, that most heart doctors can administer the proper testing. Only problem there is that you will not get the post test analysis and counciling you need.

3. Local university. Most universities with Athletic programs offer this kind of testing. Again, while you might get 'some' counciling and guidance, you will not get exactly what you need.

Bottom line is.. call around, and if Possible, find a USAT certified Coach or one that is certified in at least one of the three disciplins, and go with them. It's worth driving to get the test done as it tells you a LOT about yourself, where you are, and where you might be able to go.

Good Luck, and keep us posted on your search.

I did it!! managed my first OWS and Olympic distance all in one go and didn't die lol Didn't quite manage to go sub-3 hrs (3:02:31) but it's close enough for me considering what happened.

Anyway, race reports up and pics to follow. How'd everyone else get on this weekend?

Looks like you hit the mark to me.. 3:02 is excellent for your first. I'm off to read the race report.

My weekend was pretty much pure hell. 3300 swim on friday. 18 mile run in heat that topped out in the 90's.. then the kicker of them all, a 100 mile ride in a heat index that went well into the 100's. Was miserable and it was brutal.. but I survived. Perhaps a little less confident with my IM goals, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

How is everyone doing?  We've been way too quiet!  This is peak time for me.  Two more build weeks and then I am tapering for my VERY FIRST IRONMAN!!!!!!  This is insane.  28 days and we are there.  Ron, I look forward to meeting you then.  I'm feeling a bit tired mentally and physically the last few days.  Had a great training trip to Lake Tahoe last weekend, for those of you who don't read my log, check out the pics in my album.  It was an amazing time with six other triathletes.  Lots of tough and beautiful miles put on the bike.

I rode 110 miles of the IMWI course today.  It was hot and humid and I'm feeling it!  I ordered a 12-27 cassette yesterday, and I'll be riding that on race day as opposed to my 11-23 that I've been using.  Look forward to spinning up those hills without so much mashing.

What is everyone up to these days?  Races coming up?  Focusing on one of the three sports?  Having a social life?  I think I broke my social life.  Good thing my girlfriend is doing IMWI or we would never see each other...

Hope all is well for everyone--I know there are others peaking, recovering from injury, enjoying racing success, and all that other good stuff.  Let's hear what's up with you!!!

My only tri left for the year is in the beginning of Sept.  It's a sprint.

Then I have the bike leg of a HIM on 9/30.

Then 1 week later I will be running my first marathon.

I really won't have a lot of time to sit around as my training for my second marathon will begin straight away. It's in Jan.

I'm really looking forward to taking it easy from training in Oct/Nov/Dec.  Those will be the days where I will do what I want to do when I want to do it (at least for S and B).

Then Jan 1 it all picks back up again for HIMs in May and June of next year.

Just finished my final race of the season today.  It was the 5430 Long Course, which is a HIM in Boulder.  I'll have an official race report sooner or later.  Good race though.  I shaved about 50 minutes off of my overall time compared to my HIM in St Croix earlier this year.  Granted,  this was a much easier course than St. Croix.

I checked out those Tahoe pictures last week.. was trying to pick you out, but there were no clues. Nice place. I've only been there in the winter.. to Ski Heavenly. Were you able to see fire damage? That lake is amazing. I think you said you swam in it. If so, that is awesome.

I'm in peak training, and this week will be nothing less. Mental and physical wear down here as well. Taper comes soon.. 7 training days counting today. Sometimes I'm confident, others I'm not. My first IM, so I really don't have a lot to go on.

Jonathan.. your going to really enjoy Chicago. Best part is that funkiller is doing it too. You guys will really have a good time. Most important is that you soak up the atmosphere entirely.. take it all in. You are going to do great.

Awesome job TriForrest on the HIM. 50 minutes is a lot of time to take off, no matter the course. I'll be looking for the race report.

Kimje.. Greycat, Little Turtle... what's up with you guys? I know Greycats net access is limited these days.. or so I read.

I'm still here! Kinda took a week off after London which has seemed to morph into two and work has quite happily sucked up available time and more!

Just today been discussing with my coach a plan for my half marathon at the beginning of Oct as well as winter training to build up for next season and strength training for climbing and MA. As you can guess it's a bit complex at the moment but it's getting there.

Work is taking off in a major fashion at the moment with offices being built projects getting dumped this way etc. I'll be moving down to the head office soon so I'll be focussing on getting all of that in place over tri training at the moment but I'm not quitting just yet

how's everyone else doing?

Atl - looking good for the IM. how you feeling about it?

triforrest - 50 mins?!? that's just awesome!

Hey everyone,

I've finally got a few extra minutes at the library to post here.  Without internet at home it's been really hard to find the time to keep up with everything.  Sorry.

So lets see here.....

Graycat - Congrats on your first OWS and your first oly!  That's an awesome accomplishment and your time looks great to me!

TriForrestTri - Congrats on your HIM!  Taking 50 min. off your time is amazing regardless of the course!  Wow.

PeterAK and Atl_Runner looks like you two are both kicking @ss, as usual!

Ok only 3 min. left of internet time and I have to give my computer up.  Eek!  As for me I'm doing an oly this weekend....mainly because there just happens to be one in my home town and I'm visiting my parents for my dad's 60th bday.  It'll be really cool for my parents to see me tri.  I'm using it as training for my A race the weekend after, which is a near oly-length sprint.  I wanted to do a relay but couldn't find anyone to do the run, so I'm on my own.  I'm debating about whether I'm best to just to the swim and bike and then DNF or do part of the run first before stopping.  I know for sure that I can't handle a 10k right now as my runs have not been doing so well.  My tri the following weekend has a 4 mile run so i need to save my legs for that.  Times up, gotta go!

Hey all,

Just wanted to check back in with everyone.  I've been taking it slow since early June (knee cartilage tear plus DVT (blood clot)).

Just an update: My doppler / ultrasound is scheduled for Monday morning.  Then I see the hematologist on Wednesday morning - he will give the yay or nay as to whether the blood clot has deminished enough for it to be "safe" for surgery.  About an hour after I see him I have an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon.  If I have good news from the first appointment, she'll schedule the knee surgery for me.  Then, hopefully very soon, I'll be able to run on it.  It's been very hard not to be able to train like I wanted to and to miss 2 races I had planned.

I have know idea how to post the July training so I'll try this (keep in mind I spent some of the month on crutches and trying to make my lower leg less purple):

July's totals:
Bike:4h 45m 40s  - 37.11 Mi
Swim:1h 30m  - 10 M
Strength:1h 25m
Elliptical Training:20m

Hiking:

45m

Hey - it worked!
