Hey everyone! I did it! I did the Pacific Open Water Challenge half-mile swim, and even took first in my (small) age group! I have a shiny medal and everything! I placed 1 out of 3 for my age group, 22 out of 31 for all of the females, and 4 out of 15 for the females that are post-puberty. There were a ton of cute, preteen Mission Viejo club swimmers in our wave...who all kicked my butt, by the way!

But, I conquered my fear of OW and feel like I got GREAT practice for that part of my tri in September. I'm on Cloud 9! I wrote a race report, though it is lengthy, if anyone want to see it!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it! It felt nice to actually race, as I've been training for 9 months and still have three to go. Now I'm looking in to other races to keep me going until September. I'm thinking about a 5K this coming weekend. I didn't want to do one quite this soon, but it benefits Melanoma research. My dad died of Melanoma and in twelve years I have NEVER seen an event to raise money for it. They also have a kids' run, which I'm going to let the kids do. It is super short, and they'll get a shirt and medal. They'll love that!

OK...I'm tired and posted too soon. I'm also thinking about a one mile OW swim at the end of the month. It's in the same bay that I train and kayak in, which is awesome. But, I haven't done a mile yet, so I'll have to up the training. The cool part is that I won't have currents or chop to contend with in there!

sealiongirl - I'm soooo PROUD of you for getting out there and doing the OWS.  You had plenty of reservations, but you went out there and conquered the swim.  Great job!  What a great confidence builder!  And congrats on the 5K!  You are well on your way to your first tri!  Yay!!!!

I am doing a three hour ride tomorrow. Any thoughts on what/how often to eat. On my 2 hour rides, I don't usually "eat". I have one gu. I have seen a lot of people here recommend uncrustables so I bought some and was thinking of trying one tomorrow. Not sure how much or how often to eat. On my 2 hour rides, I am not hungry. I think I might be during a three hour ride.

I did a 3hours a bit ago, and stopped off at around mile 30, had a bagel and water (and a cookie), and it was fine...I also had water at around mile 40...but I dont do gatorade that well...

you can probably do just liquid like gu, but on the bike, but at least for me...solids didnt seem too bad...

I do 3-4 hrs almost every weekend with no more than my water and some cytomax.  If I remember, I bring a banana and/or a power bar, and a baggie full of nuts.  Cytomax definitely prevents the "bonk".  But I always follow up with a big protein meal.

Total novice here.  I've only bricked once, so have no concept of how my body might react to doing the 3 sports in a row, and what it will add to my times in each individual sport.  Trying to anticipate what my times might be in my races so I can have a goal to work toward.

QUESTION:  My race is 0.24 mile swim, 6 mile bike, 1.5 mile run.  Let's say, ok, I can run a 9 min mile, so 1.5 miles = ~14 mins.  How much time should I add to that, given how tired I might be after the swim and bike?  I figure the bike I can do in 22 mins; it's a flat course--how much time do I add to my estimated ride, given the swim?  I have no idea of my estimated speed on the swim, heading over to the pool today to check it out.

I know there are no precise answers, but I'm wondering if someone can tell me relative percentages of time to add.

Depends on what you are good at...I'm a pretty good swimmer, so I usually come out of the water "warmed up" for the bike...I always bike faster than I do in training...usually I run about 20 sec. slower/mile (if I'm in good shape - am not quite there yet) than if I was running a 5K...

Those seem a bit slow for me on my bike time...swim time is just about right on...run time is a bit slow - but I've been avoiding the run - so we will see how bad that one is

How is everyone doing...we haven't kept up too well...so, here's to trying to do that - how are you:

1. Feeling about your trianing?
2. How far away is your next race, is it your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. tri?
3. How are you feeling about your upcoming race?
4. What are your goals for the race?
5. What's next (after the race)?


I got an Olympic distance coming up in 3 weeks, with a biathlon the week before...am pretty nervous about the run in the Olympic, but I'm trying to grin and bear it and actually do the distance to train for the run, we will see if it works!!! My goal for the biathlon is to simply run the whole run...my goal for the Olympic is to do better than last year...will see - I think I'm a bit weaker on the run this time - I psyched myself out for it, blah!
After the Olympic, I have 2 more (local) biathlons, and 2 more tris for the season....then I'm going to take a month "off" in order to recoup - then I'm going to do an Olympic training plan going up to St. Anthony's...then I'm going to start the Ironman training for Ironman FL, YAHOO!!

1. My training is going well. My swim is great. I can and have competed in more than double my race distance, so I'm good there. My bike is good, although I'm transitioning to a road bike from a mountain bike now. It's akward, but should help a lot in the meantime. Run still has a long way to go, but is improbing.

2. There's seven weeks until my tri, but also a one mile OW race I'm considering in August. I did two OW races in July and loved them.

3. I've been training for this tri for almost a year, so I'll be excited to do it already...but nervous too!

4. My goal is to be middle of the pack or better on the swim. Survive the bike ride without a crash. Get through the run without shin splints or coming in dead last. Second to last...okay...but last...not okay.

5. After that I'll have two more sprints, each three weeks apart. One in Hermosa Beach and a scary one (lots of bike hills) in Catalina.

Hope everyone else is well. Does anyone know what happened to cadreamer? She hasn't posted anything in her log in weeks. Hope she's okay!

I was diagnosed with pneumonia and am still recovering. I am supposed to do a half mary on Labor day and an oly on September 23rd. Pretty sure the oly is not going to happen. Not sure about the half mary. I could walk it. I am pretty ticked because I was making some good progress. Now it is all gone. Hopefully I will be back to normal in the next couple of weeks.

I was also wondering about cadreamer??

I'm doing well, can't wait for my first tri, only 17 days away (Aug 19)! WOW, can't believe it is finally here. Training is coming along, can swim and run my race distance, still working on the bike part. That is my only worry right now. I don't have another tri scheduled for this year, but I am going to do another 5K with some friends from work. They have never done one, so it is fun to hear and see how their trianing is coming. As far as doing anther tri in my life, I'm not going to rule that out, I just want to concentrate on this one first.

The only race goals that I have for this one is to finish. The time limit is 4 1/2 hours, my goal is anything between 3-4 hours. I'd be happier closer to 3 hours, but will settle for anything in between.

I hope everyone is well, sorry to hear about your pneumonia halfdome. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Question, since I've never done a tri before, only 5K's I'm not sure how my training should go the week of the triathlon. Right now my plan is the following:

  1. Mon 8/13 - run race distance 3.3 mi
  2. Tue 8/14 - bike between 15 - 18 mi
  3. Wed 8/15 - rest
  4. Thur 8/16 - rest
  5. Fri 8/17 - swim race distance 1100 yds
  6. Sat 8/18 - rest
  7. Sun 8/19 - TRIATHLON

Does anything see something bad with this schedule, should I be doing something else, your thoughts would be most helpful.

Regarding your prep for your impending race, are you following a training plan or winging it on your own?  You may have read where I've written this before, but I can't more highly recommend following a plan.  Doing so, for me, added about 70% better results than when I trained according to my own schedule.  Food for thought...

1. Feeling CRAPPY about my training right now.  Had been doing SO well since January, preparing for my first race ever, then SHIN SPLINTS, which my phys therapist says is a result of compensating for poorly healed sprained ankle I suffered last summer.  I have onl 4% dorsal flexion (regular is 16-20%)--so my shins are working OT correcting for that.  He doesn't want me running AT ALL, and thus my training basically came to a halt 2 weeks ago...just as I was making significant progress with my running.  It's bled over into the rest of my training, because it just sucked the air outta my balloon and my motivation has spontaneously combusted.

2. My race is Oct 14 or 15--I forget--it's a super-sprint (really short!), and again, it's my first race.  I have no other races scheduled since it's late in the season.  I figure I'll spend the winter just working on my base fitness for the spring.

3.  I'm feeling ok about the race, except not sure yet what I'm going to do about the run given that I can't train for it.  I HAVE been consistently swimming and feel myself rapidly improving, I think I'll be slow but will survive the swim.  I have no concerns whatsoever about the bike race, since that's my sport.  Still don't have my new road bike yet, still making payment$ on it!  I've estimated my times for all 3 plus the transitions, and don't think I'll come in last (given previous years' results).  Oh, and I still haven't done an OW swim yet...need to get a wetsuit, but I wanna pay off the bike first...

4. Goal for my race is to finish, hopefully not last, but I do have that fear.

5. After the race, like I said, no plans but winter training.
