Hey - I forgot you were racing. Congratulations! Sounds to me like your goal was not aggressive enough. You beat it by 7:00 - that is huge. Nice job. I will have to check out your race report now...

Well, I had my first race of the season on Sunday and I'm pretty excited about how I did. Of course, it rained all week and the forecast for Sunday was not looking good either but I didn't stress about it because what will be will be. The weather turned out great, overcast and not extremely hot like you would think for Texas in June.
My goal was to finish in 1:30 and I did it in 1:23! I was 6th out of 29 in my age group! I've spent several months training hard and I know that paid off.

WOW! Great job. All of your training is paying off. Isn't it nice to work hard and see the rewards?

Strep throat, nothing serious, still on the shelf. Disco pre-tri on Sunday.

How do you build endurance in the water? Is there such a thing as overtraining in the pool? The reason I ask is I could swim at lunch for 30 minutes 5 days a week and then either ride or run in the evenings. Would 5 days a weeke in the pool help?

I think 5 days would help dramatically since there is less pressure on your joints. You might try 2 on 1 off 2 on though.

The key is to vary your workouts. Go long and slow, go short and fast.

Pretty soon you'll be going long and fast.

I've never tried five straight days, but the biggest threat I could see is calf cramps. Hate those!

What I truly need is a swim teacher!!! My wife thinks I already spend enough money on my hobbies!! Right now after a few strokes I have a fear of putting my face back in the water, so my body drags quite a bit making my swimming that much tougher since I am pulling "dead" weight instead of gliding across the top.

Mike, 5 days in the pool swimming with bad form won't do you much good. You'll just get a little faster with really bad form.

You fear putting your face in the water? Interesting. Why? Are you claustrophobic? A lot people who are have that issue.

It sounds like you need to focus on being ok with your face in the water, before you move on to bigger and better.

What I would suggest is this, put on some fins, get a kickboard and just kick. While you are kicking, put your face in the water and have your arms stretched out in front holding the kickboard. Kick with your face in the water and breathe to the side like you would if you were swimming. When you breathe, your chin should go towards your shoulder. It doesn't need to touch, but shoud go in that direction.

This drill will help you get over your fear of putting your face in the water, teach you how to breathe... and you will get some kicking in as well.

Once you get OK with putting your face in the water and breathing comfortably to the side, then you can start working on your form and stroke.

I, myself, don't understand the fear!! 20 almost 30 years ago I took extensive lessons through Red Cross. I don't know if it's because I try to breath on every stroke and tire easier. I don't know if it's because water gets in my goggles so then I don't want to put my face in the water. I was never one to swim with my eyes open, but then I swim in a zig zag pattern. I scrapped my goggles after the first 100 yesterday.

Gotta go with Karen here...you need to treat the illness not the symptoms.

I'd get a coach, even if only for a few sessions to let you know what you can do better.

Well, if water are getting in your goggles, then you need to fix that problem. It's easy to fix. Maybe they aren't tight enough? Or maybe the nose part is too far apart? Etc.?

Wear goggles. When you do open water swimming you will need them. Find a pair that doesn't leak. They are out there.

Helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllp.

Felt good this morning when I woke up so I decided to go for a run.

Cramps set in a half mile into the run. It was mostly in my quads but it was extremely painful.

I went into the run not wanting to overdo it and was going to do a half mile warm up, a mile, then anything extra if I felt up to it. I didn't finish the warm up. I think it was just dehydration. I'm hoping it was.

My problems are many (obviously)

1 - I've got an OWS swim tomorrow morning. If I'm cramping on the run, I don't want to cramp on the swim, especially in OW. I think I'm just going to the pre-Tri to observe

2 - I'm trying not to go all mental but I need to at least know if I'm capable of racing next weekend. My confidence right now is a bit low.

A week ago I was completely ready for this race.

How can I go about testing myself so I can make a decision about the race?

Ok, I talked myself off the ledge. Went and did about 1200m at the pool this afternoon. No cramps, no pain.

Happy to hear it!

Well, I'm off to ride and eat with my cyclling club! Fun!

How is everyone doing out there? Good I hope!

I know that GRANT has is FIRST TRIATHLON this coming weekend! WOO-HOO! Hopefully, we will finally meet face to face as well. Altough race days seem to be nuts and it's hard to find someone you haven't seen before.

I am also racing with Grant. Although, I just kind of threw this one in there because my boyfriend was doing it and some of my friends. It's really a "C" race for me. My focus is my HIM training for Oct. I'll be racing on sore legs. I won't expect miracles.

After this weekend, I have my first Oly. Gosh, I really WISH CapTex had gone off. I can't really taper for this coming Oly. So I probably won't get a good example of what I can really do at an Oly. I hope my performance doesn't affect my attitude towards what I can do at the HIM.

What is everyone else up to? Still swimming, biking and running I hope!

Really, this week is going to be a killer, especially with the holiday tomorrow. It seems like it's just going to drag by! I want to race!

I'm probably going to spend a portion of tomorrow working on transitions. I've got a hitch-mount bike rack so I think a smooth parking lot would suffice. Any body see anything wrong with that plan? I might look a little funny running around a parking lot in my tri shorts...but whatever.

Aside from that it's business as usual with the training.

K, I'll be out there bright and early so I'll come find you in transition. Chances are I'll be borrowing your idea of setting up near the end of a rack. Two pairs of size 13 shoes take up a lot of real estate. I'll keep any eye out for buttercup.

*Do you ever feel like you are talking to yourself* HA! I noticed we seem to be the only two regulars around here. Oh well... we are here!

I'll look for you on Sunday! I will be parking it at the end of a row, away from the isle.

Hope you got in some transition practice.

Oh, and I hope it stops RAINING by Sunday!

Hey guys,
I'm still here! My girls have been at a tri camp and so I was helping out these past couple of days. Yesterday was their last day and they got to do a mini tri for the parents. They actually did it twice. It's so much fun watching the kids do it. They actually have a race this Sunday.
My training hasn't been what I'd like it to be but I'm still working at it. The weather is really frustrating as both of you in Dallas know.
We'll have to only think good weather thoughts for the race on Sunday. You guys will do great!

That is so cute! A tri camp and then a race! You must be so *proud*!

Your training looks great, so don't worry.

Yes, the weather has been very frustrating! In fact, Grant and I's race has been changed to a duathlon now thanks for the lake being too high. UGH!

So... what happened to Danny on his first tri is what is happening to Grant.

Oh - I am sorry to hear your race has become a duathlon now. The lake is too high? Odd that this could be an issue. But I guess you guys have a gotten a LOT of rain lately. I am still looking for another open water swim to try and get over my "issues." It is tough when you live in NYC and don't own a car. Oh, and don't want to swim in the Hudson River. Eewww...

Well... yea... it's an issue because the water has flooded the pavillons and covered up trees and bushes. If you swim in that, you could very likely run into a tree underwater, or even a picnic area. Not safe really. I think the lake we were supposed to swim at was over by 20 feet.

You do have a challange there. And I have heard that the Hudson River is not a good place to swim. Smart thinking passing that up.

You should make some tri friends who have cars!

Finished. Final time of high 1:32, low 1:33, not really sure.

I checked the results afterwards and it said I was in there somewhere. When I went back to look at the AG rankings something had gone awry putting my T2 at 45 minutes.

Either way, I'll have a report up later.

I still haven't gotten off the couch yet. Except to make protein shake and a sandwich.

I'm not wasted, I just feel so content that I don't really feel the need to move. I need groceries though.
