Expert 1195 Shelby Twp | Subject: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road So, yesterday my friend and i are in the park, riding along.... We are descending down a hill, trailing each other, and up comes a motorcycle with a woman screaming "move out of the f'in way!" ok, thanks for scaring the sh*t out of us downa hill, but we scoot the whole 5 more inches over we could, and as she drives by (well she was riding, a guy was driving), she yells "get off the f'in road" and a few other choice words. Ok, Im used to this, as we all are. But this one really irritated me, as in, I would have really caused a scene had they pulled over, as some drivers had done before. First off, were in a park, for that reason, its a RECREATIONAL park where your the minority if your on a motorized vehicle. Second, and the part that bothered me the most is, motorcyclists are really disrespected in our area also, and they claim no one watches out for them, runs them off the road, etc etc etc. So for a motorcyclist in the first place to be so angry at another group of "bikes" taht pretty much fear for their lives when they go out, I was pretty pissed. I guess I just thought if anyone would actually give us a little respect and not run us off the road, another 2 wheeler would have. Normally I just carry on my merry way, but not yesterday. But, that's just me... well considering she was on a harley and was uhhh, comfortably hanging very far over on both sides, I was gonna offer her to ride on my kind of 2 wheeled bike instead of hers had she pulled over like we thought they were going to |

Extreme Veteran 514 Perkasie, PA | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road I pulled up next to someone who yelled something like that at me and said, "I wish horrible, mean people like YOU would get off the road." Then there was the woman who coasted through a stop sign and came right out into the road and nearly hit me on Sunday. I said, "Yo! I'm riding here!" (I had the right of way and no stop sign.) She yelled a few things and I said, "You were supposed to STOP in case you didn't notice." (Because at this point I'm out in the middle of the road riding along side the drivers window.) She said, "I did!" I said, "NO, you didn't." She said, "Yes I did!" I finally said, "Whatever. Just get the hell away from me lady." The best part was as she took off I knew there were a ton of other cyclists up the road she would have to deal with. It was a charity ride. :-) Edited by cmbcwb3 2007-05-23 2:45 PM |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road I've had the opposite experience - I find that motorcycle riders, particularly those on Harleys, are reasonably friendly when I encounter them while riding. If I find myself beside one at a stoplight just saying "nice bike" is usually enough to get at least a friendly nod. I frequently get called "Lance" in a semi-friendly/sarcastic way. It's the drunk rednecks in pickups trucks, the soccer-moms-talking-on-cell-phones driving huge SUV's, and the 90-year-olds who can't see past the hood ornaments on their old Cadillacs that scare me. Master 3019 West Jordan, UT | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road I don't think it had anything to do with them being on a motorcycle. Jerks come in all flavors. I'd MUCH rather get hit by a motorcycle than a suburban. |

Heck, I don't want to get hit by a little kid on a huffy. Some people are just JackA$$'s, no matter what they are on. I just think it is kind of funny when they yell. I really have not gotten that much as I don't ride on many roads to avoid this. I get honked at alot while running (I figure it is usually just hot blondes trying to get my attention, ha ha). If I had anything I felt was dangerous I would definately try to get a license plate an report the incident.tkbslc - 2007-05-23 3:03 PM I don't think it had anything to do with them being on a motorcycle. Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road The other day a girl in my office asks me a question. Goes like this: Her: "You ride your bike a lot, right? Let me ask you, if there is a paved bike path next to a road aren't people on bikes legally supposed to be on the path and not in the road?" Me: No. According to state law a bicycle is a legal vehicle on the road and has as much right to be on most roads as a car. The existence of a path nearby is usually irrelevant. Unless of course the path is there specifically for bikes to cross a road or something obvious like that. Her: What???!!! No way! You're lying. Me: I'm so glad you drive a Yukon. |

I would have written the plate down and turned it in. Bicycles are vehicles, too. run4yrlif - 2007-05-23 3:02 PM Maybe it's sort of a reverse "pay it forward" attitude--she was just passing her anger on down the food chain. |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road On a ride last week, there was a bike/running path that parallels the road (4-lane, btw). I pull up to a stop light and a lady in a car pulls up next to me. She proceeds to yell at me for not being on the bike path. I told her that on downhills, my being on the bike path would endanger other athletes, and that I have a legal right to be on the road. She balked and said no one travels that fast. I said ok, when the light turns green, stick with me on the downhill until we get to the bottom and tell me how fast we're going. She says ok and we take off on the green. I peaked at around 26-27 mph on the downhill and then she took off. Bike paths are good for runners or kids on bikes...not good for us. |

Mountain View, CA | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road If I remember correctly from driver's ed all those years ago, when two vehicles are approaching each other on a hill and there's not enough room for them to pass each other on the road, the downward-moving vehicle has the right of way. The one going up the hill is supposed to pull over and let the other one pass. Of course, that point is moot if the other person doesn't acknowledge your legal right to be on the road... |

Veteran 222 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road This was the best part about going back to my college town this weekend - traffic was so great! There was a bike lane everywhere and drivers were super nice. Actually I don't have too much trouble on the bike at home, but I do get honked at for running in the opposite bike lane. Lucky for them my left calf is starting to be annoyed by road running, so I may have to stick to something flatter. |

The problem is when trying to educate them, you don't have the time nor the energy to drill it into their skulls what "our" rights are. Best reply is "Have a nice day." |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road If by some awful chance you ever do get hit by a motorist while you are cycling, do yourself a favor and consult an attorney. Laws in many states say that while you are a legal vehicle on the road and subject to the same rules as motor vehicles, once you get hit, you are often considered to be a pedestrian. That gives you a LOT more legal clout.

I live in Lance Armstrong's home town, he is our biggest celebrity, yet, some red neck ignorant still clipped him a few years ago. I believe his defense in court was something like "he shouldn't have been on the damn road." Watch yourself out there friends. |

Elite 3494 Renton, Washington | Subject: RE: Interesting twist on people who get pissed at you for biking on the road Oh geez. Having been hit by a car, and hard in 1994 I am obviously so much more wary on the road. In fact it's taken me over 10 years to get back to cycling properly on the road again. I've grown more confident over just the last few months but when I first headed out there I hadn't been on the road a few minutes when some teenagers came whizzing by me honking their horn, whistling, screaming "HEY SEXY SPANDEX LADY" and NEARLY slapping my a$$ that it really made me wonder why I bother. It really upset me (stupidly) but I guess if you cycle on the road it's really something you unfortunately have to deal with. Last night it was the POLICE I had trouble with, no I didn't do anything but seriously they were STALKING ME! He waited for me at a 4 way stop. I must have stood for about 2 minutes waiting for someone to go so I did! MERP!!!! Mistake. He was on me like flies roon sh!te. On his loudspeaker "Lets not forget our right of waaaaaays" Just like that. I really feel your pain. |
