Lynn, Thanks for the laugh! I was having bad day at work and had a good belly laugh at your post. Sorry for the confusion. May I suggest www.brainready.com? a good tool for firing up those neurons! LOL! I use it and really like it.

I predict that you will do better than 1:14! Just remember to pace yourself in the first 5K to keep the time that you want, then try to negative split (even if it's by 5 seconds, it counts!

I have to give you crap on your log--it was 18F and you wore clothes for an Eskimo's weekend! Come to WI and enjoy the 3F windchills! 

I have been inside for the last several days on the TM due to icy conditions and a cold and not minding it nearly as much as I thought I would.  We are getting a new TM today to kick off my Boston training.  I am seriously hoping my 18m run this weekend is outdoors!

Wanted to post my new favorite breakfast:

Whole steel cut oats (like the ones that take 20-25 minutes to cook)

add to boiling water: 1 Tablespoon honey, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 oz walnuts, 2-3 Tablespoons dried cranberries or apricots, 1 teaspoon coconut oil, 1 Tablespoon ground Flax seeds, oats

Add some protein powder after cooking or cottage cheese. This will stay with you until lunch. If you want, cook 2-3 servings at once and then store in fridge and heat as individual servings.

Yum. I eat this about 2-3 times a week. YUM!

Love steel cut oats!  I actually make mine in a rice cooker and it is super easy.  If you do not have one of these appliances, consider it.  They are great for brown rice, barley and other other whole grains.

Suzy - What kind of TM are you getting? 

My favorite breakfast of late:

SWISS OATMEAL

2 applea, cored and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup apple cider or unsweetened apple juice
1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1 tablespoon honey
1 cup plain low-fat yogurt ( i use vanilla flavor)
2 tablespoons sliced almonds
2 tablespoons raisins

Into a large bowl, combine apples and apple cider. Toss the apples to moisten.

Stir in the oats and honey.

Add yogurt, almonds, and raisins. Stir to mix well.

May be kept in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Dave this sounds really good.
Be sure to use red skinned apples! A recent study showed that red skinned apples are better for you than yellow or green ones. More brain boosting antioxidants etc...

You can give me crap, BUT I used to live in the midwest! grew up in the burbs of chicago. I am very familliar with -10 weather etc...I will say in my defense, it was icy/slippery and I knew I wasn;t going to be running that fast, which meant I had to layer more. Did I also mention that it was snowing? I found that if I ran on the road (which was clear I could keep the pace I wanted) but the cars werent moving over for me. I thought it was safer to run on the unplower shoulder/sidewalk.

My friend did 16 miles that day and complained about the cold. He told me he was wearing a technical shirt, a COTTON shirt (jeeze) and a jacket...and sweatpants! I scolded him for all the cotton and told him to get some CWX tights or underarmour tights.

My good friend qualified for boston at Philly. She was having a bad day not feeling well and she made it by 2 minutes! This is the same chick who also qualified for Kona on her first IM at Lake Placid. She came in 4th in her AG. The woman who came in 5th has been trying to qualify for a couple of years....(there were only 4 spots) She's very gifted. The main point of this is she loves running on a TM indoors. She blasts the stereo and bangs out an 18 miler.

Hilary Biscay runs an entire marathon on a TM as part of her IM training. it can be done....just figure out what would keep you there for 2:30-3 hours!

For me, that would be putting a big gooey cake just out of reach....Carrot/stick training! LOL!

Hi All

Jeanne:  The rice cooker takes about the same amount of time, but it is idiot proof.  I put everything in the cooker, plug it in and when it beeps it is done perfectly.  Seems like when I used to make it in the pan it was always too hard or too runny. No need to watch the pot.

Dave: We purchased a Precor TM.  I originally wanted a Woodway, but decided $7500 for a TM I only use in inclimate weather was a little excessive!  Like most of the other high-end models, the Precor has a belt technology that makes it feel like running outside.  Given our 6" of snow last night with 2 more storms yet to come, I envision doing my 18m inside (or at least part of it). I have done it before so I know I can get through it.

To everyone, if you have not looked at the new videos posted under articles you should.  I found the swimming ones really helpful.  This really is an amazing site!

Hey SUzy,  glad you looked at the swimming videos the finger drag was what I was talking about, and while the video, makes the point that it sets up for good hand position, I also think it might help with your right side breathing....

Suzy, sometimes drills are not effective because you are not traveling fast enough to stay afloat! Try doing this with zoomers or using a float and doing it while pulling. Using a float puts you out of position a bit, so i would opt for the zoomers or fins first. Fingertip drag is a great drill, so is catch-up.

A good drill for balance (and fins!) is:
(i do this a lot because I only breathe to the left)(bad jeanne)
push off from the wall swim on your left side with your left arm out, facing to the right. kick all the way down to the end of the pool nice and easy. Resting your ear on your arm, turning your head to breathe. (only your head) repeat on other side. do for at least 100 each side, no more than 200! It really gets you used to hanging out on your weak side.

After these drills you can graduate to the switch drill. Start on left side, kick 3 times, switch to right with one pull, switch to left, one pull, kick three times, your body position is the same as the drill above.

all of these were shown to me by an Olympic Gold medalist who coaches swimming.

Melanie Valerio. she's on Team timex. at 6'3" my head comes up to her armpits. She won Gold in altanta in 1996. I think she was 3rd out of the water (overall) at an IM last year or the year before.

I shared a lane with her at camp and she wanted to swim in circles, I said, no lets just split it, I'm glad I did that, she was lapping me so badly while she was doing drills!

Your drills are very TI-esque!  I went to the pool today and spent a large portion of the time on drills - catch-up, single arm, and finger tip vs just swimming.  They definitely help.  I was even able to do that darn finger tip drag drill Dave likes so much Cool.  Better on one side than the other, but it'll come.

Suzy, did you use fins at all?

I learned how to swim long distance with TI. it really does work and is great for beginners. I highly recommend it if you are having trouble with swimming. It gets all the right concepts into your head about swimming long and lean, swimming in a relaxed state etc...

The big difference in my drills vs. TI is hand placement. in TI they want your arm angled down towards the bottom of the pool. I was told by Melanie to have your arm straight out, parallel to the bottom.

Another difference that I do from TI is head placement. melanie told me that you should not submerge your head. Its like constantly banging your head into a wall. She told me to have the water line hit you between your eyebrows and hairline. Use your head to help cut through the water. Then when you breathe, tilt your head and only look at the lane line next to you. You should not be able to see anything on deck. Only 1 eye should be above the water. This has been the hardest thing for me to work on, but when I do it right I can feel my stroke getting much smoother and easier and I seem to be able to speed up. This is so much easier for me to do in a lake... the walls and flip turns really get in the way.

I am lucky to swim with Terry Laughlin (inventor of TI) at my masters swim club. His training center is in New Paltz, NY.

With all this talent around me, you would think I'd be better, but I guess it goes to show that swimming is a blue collar sport....you have to swim regularly to get better.

I hope to move up from the "remedial lane" (lane 6) to lane 5 by February.

I did not kinow you were someone who believed in TI.  I actually took a two day workshop in June in Milwaukee.  I was in way over my head (literally!).  My class was full of IM and tri folks and they lost me at double underswitches.  I actually contacted Terry for questions on how to keep the process flowing, but there is no TI teacher in Madison. While I practiced the drills I did not see much improvement and had no one to critique what I was doing.  Flash forward 5 months and I am now in a position to appreciate some of those drills although I am working with someone one on one who is not a great fan of TI.

I think people are so individual that a coach needs to watch you to determine the best way for you to swim effortlessly.  For example, Mark (coach) also recommends reaching the arm far forward before placing it in the water.  He has me position my head so I can see slightly in front of me (not head down like TI).

I want to do the Danskin tri in July so I have got to keep at it!

You are quite welcome. TI is great, but I agree it can get complicated. i only had the DVDs and was self taught. everything I have done to my stroke to improve has been from friends and teammates giving me pointers.

It sounds like your coach is heading you in the right direction with your hand position and head position. Keep trying, keep drilling, it will come together.

I am curious to see what feedback I am going to get from my new coach. he really rode our lane tonight. 3200 yards in 1:15! (we are the remedial lane) (slow and we can;t count)

our workout: wu 400 swim, 100 kick, 200 pull, 3 x 100 on 2:00 (build) 100 ez swim
(so that is already 1100 yards)
main set: 3 x 3 x 300 on 6:00 (faster lanes are on 5:00)
1st 300 swim, 2nd 300 neg split, 3rd hard
we made it through 2 sets and then ran out of time.
did a 300 ez cool down

Water logged and sore....

Whoo Hoo! You beat your goal by 1:20! that is HUGE! Don't say "I did good for me anyway!" that is horse poop! You did AWESOME by any standards! rememeber, most of america is fat and lazy and would have to walk all of it and then bi___ and moan about having to be out there in the first place. Hold your head up high and be proud of your accomplishment!

Our group has fallen out of the archives current list so I thought I would provide an update. I am entering a mini sprint March 9 - 200, 5K, 10mile bike. Then on March 16 a duathlon - 5K, 14M, 5K. Then on April 6 I want to redo the indoor triathlon at the gym, this is the one that started this whole crazy, fun, exercise adventure off for me. I am curious to see to what degree I have improved in a year. I want to try an olympic distance this summer. I will keep you posted.

Suzy, how is the training for Boston going? Good Luck to you.

WOW, you have a lot of things on your plate already.  I would love to find a 200 swim.  All the sprints around here are a minimum of 400 which still sounds a little daunting.

I am gearing up for a 1/2 marathon on 3/15 in preparation for Boston.  Most of my runs have been on a TM because the weather has been so SNOWY and ICY here in Madison.  Unbelievable year.  It is an all time record snowfall for the area, over 85" to date.

How is everyone else doing?
