Subject: Fall and Winter Training Plans

Todays 48F bike ride reminded me that Fall is right around the corner (at least for some of us), how is every body approaching the off season? focusing on weaknesses? going full force with no change? becoming a permanent couch potato? something else?

I am excited to be going back to swimming lessons, want to continue to see improvement in biking form (albeit on a trainer) and run, but need to find the balance.

Thoughts?

Pretty basic question, how do you keep track of the elapsed time associated with each part of the tri, including TI and T2?  I know in the WI IM the chip does it, but what about smaller races?

I have a Garmin 305 for running and an Edge 305 for biking.

Garmin! NOOOOO! must be a TIMEX or I will not answer the question.....(ha ha)

Well, the best thing is to get an Ironman 50 lap sleek watch for around 40-50 bucks and keep track of your time on that. I use mine that way and hit the LAP button when I cross the timing mats. Some races are so small that they don't have multiple mats at entrance and exits of T1 and T2. I just use my TIMEX watch for that.

With the Garmin you won;t be able to get a start or swim time....with the TIMEX, you can wear it the whole way throught the race and get all your splits.....how 'bout 'dem apples!?

Splits are the way I go too and yes it's a timex ironman watch - 25 bucks at walmart.

On another note.. Dr confirmed hernia diagnosis. So now I have a referral to a surgeon.  I'll be out of training for a while  we'll see

Sorry to hear that, Dave. My friend had that fixed and he was back riding his bike 4 weeks after surgery. no running though. Hmm, was it the tree removal that did it?

You could ask about aquarunning. Its non weight bearing and could be very good for you.

On another note, I have been very busy this week and not training at all. My 2 year old kitty was diagnosed with cancer. We are getting an MRI next week and going with a new homeopathic treatment. So, my mind has been elsewhere lately....

I want to race IMAZ in 2008 and will start training for that 10/1. So the timing couldn't be better fo this to happen when I am on a training vacation.

Thanks for listening.

Jeanne - sorry to hear about the kitty.

I think the tree removal was the proverbial straw.... it hadn't been right for a long long time, but there is no ignoring it now

Very sad to hear about your kitt, so young to have that happen.  Do you live near a vet school? When our 14 year old dog Schnauzer, Newt was diagnosed with cancer that is where we were referred to.  Fortunately the UW is 15 minutes from our house.  The care was spectacular.  We eventually had to put him to sleep, but it definitely prolonged our time with him

Hang in there.

PS Thanks for the split feedback. I should have known better than to mention Garmin to you!

Suzy, its ok. I forgive you....

My close friend really rubbed salt into the wound, by ordering a Timex bodylink and sending it back to get the garmin, her wife then got a garmin as did her brother. Shoot, at least I tried.

I like my Timex bodylink. It works well for me.

My close friend is a top holisitc vet who specializes in cancer treatment, so I am very comfortable with the treatment we are going to be doing. I jsut have to get the MRI so we know where it is. It's looking like a lymphnode or chest cavity/lung area.

I had 2 other kitties pass from cancer, both I treated homeopathically and they didn;t know they were sick until a couple of hours before they passed when the tumors ruptured. This time its different, we have a great new treatment that will attack the tumor and only the tumor.

My husbadn grew up with Schnauzers...he loves them. I had Golden Retreivers. I don;t think I will be getting purebred animals anymore....sigh....

I never knew there was a homeopathic approach for pets.  I have worked with a naturopath for my own health issues, especially sports nutrition, so I suppose it is only logical alternative medicine would be available for our furry friends.  Good luck.

PS Schnauzers rule!  I already have a name picked out for my next one, if my husband will break down and let me get another dog.

So...what is everyone up to?

I went on a bike ride on Friday with my 2 friends who are going to Kona, hubby and 2 other people. The KONA bound people did 100 miles, the rest of us did 60. I made a very, very bad decision at lunch...we were ust taking it easy and I wasn't thinking. I ordered Tunafish wrap with lettuce and tomato. First of all I know better than to eat a big meal on a bike ride. (or even a sandwich) I learned this last year. My stomach just doesn't like to share. So the high fat from the mayo and the high protein from the tuna wrecked my ride. Right after lunch we had to do a big climb (5 miles ) and it was hot here on top of it all. NOW, my husband and friend both had fried egg sandwiches and red bull...they were fine. I was draggin....they wanted to stay out and do more riding because it was soo nice out. I was D-O-N-E. It took me all weekend to recover from that ride.

So, the moral of this story is, if you see me on a ride, and I order lunch, stop me! Just make me eat a powerbar and a banana.

Last night I had a good ride with my friend (going to KONA who is so freaking fast) We did 40 min warm up, 40 min at tempo or what you could do a 40K TT in, and then 40 min cool down.
She did 35 miles total, I did 30. the warm up and cool down we did together. that is my goal for training....more biking, in a quality way. Not just long rides, but LT work and intervals.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Go do the Humpty Dance!

Its Monday October 1, 2007. I am oficially in training for IMAZ 2008! And its a rest day

Went on a great ride yesterday. Nice flat to mild rolling terrain. Then the boys wanted to go climb hills. I was hammering out of my comfort zone to keep up with them on the flats, so I was worried about hitting hills...so we are riding and I finally have to switch down to my small ring, but I was still in the middle of the back cassette. The hill isn't long, I would not have considered it a "climb" by any means. We get to the intersection and one guy says, " how was that climb for you?" I was like, "Oh, that was the climb?" Then we hit 2 more. My hubby's garmin said the last one had a section (life 100 feet) of 16%. I can say that one really hurt....

Hope everyone had a great weekend doing something outside!

Sounds like you are really getting strong on the bike!  I posted a question on the forum about becoming a better biker over the winter/spring.  What's your best advice?

Had a lot of fun doing my first duathlon yesterday.  Did well on the run, average on the bike, and stunk it up big time in transitions! Lots to learn for next year.

Suzy, what if I may ask was your time/avg speed/distance on the bike?

Why were your transitions bad? All you had to do was change your shoes! LOL!

The only way to get better on the bike is to ride lots. Try to ride outside as long as you can tolerate it, 3x a week. I know Wisconsin is bitterly cold, I grew up there!

The only way that I have found to get better on the bike is to ride with people who are faster/stronger than me. It makes me "suck it up" and just ride.

Last tuesday I rode with my friend, we did a 40 min warm up, 40 min TT, 40 min CD. The warm up and CD we did together, but the TT she biked 5 miles more than I did...in just 40 minutes!
Her warm up pace was a little agressive for me, but not totally undoable, like 18 mph on a dead flat. I think if you do something like that 1x week, you will see lots of improvement when you hit the roads this spring. I use Matt Fitzgeralds book with training plans in it. You could just use it for bike workouts. He is pretty agressive.

The great thing about training over the winter on the bike, is the rides are shorter and more intense, so you see results quickly.

I would also mix it up with spinning classes at the gym. OR if you have a club or friends get everyone together with their trainers and have your long ride be in a group! How fun would that be?

Many!

I love my Pearl Izumi Barrier Jacket....i wear it running and X-C skiing too...

  • ..And tights Pearl Izumi Am Fib
  • http://www.pearlizumi.com/product.php?mode=view&pc_id=105&product_i...
the wind panels are the key

  • .. and my Northwave Gore Tex boots:
In the winter I put MTB pedals on the bike so its easier to walk around in MTB shoes. I use Crankbrothers Eggbeaters.

a balaclava is always good, or a helmet cover if its raining...
    http://www.thetriathletestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=175
    ours is yellow....

All of these items are expensive, but they are investment pieces that really work.

i don't know why they make cycling stuff in all black.....I wear the brightest stuff I can. Cars don't really expect cyclists in poor weather so you have to be even brighter!

jeanneroth - 2007-10-02 8:26 AM Suzy, what if I may ask was your time/avg speed/distance on the bike? Why were your transitions bad? All you had to do was change your shoes! LOL!

The bike was 32m long and my average over that distance was 17.6mph.  The first half was in about 20-29mph and I probably averaged 16m here, the last half was a tailwind and I was between 19-20mph. I used your advice and changed to an easier gear the last 2m so I would be ready for the run (speed diminished to 18ish).  It worked my last mile was 7:12.

I am not sure why my transitions were bad.  I talked to my rack neighbor a little while changing on the way out to bike and had to sit down to put my shoes on. I have MB shoes with the ratchet design (Not all velcro).  It took me a while to find my area after the bike which blew time. Otherwise, I did the typical took of my helmet, my shoes and put on the other shoes, grabbed a cup of water on the way to the run.

I am not sure about the biking outside thing in really cold weather.  I was thinking once it hit 35F I would be inside until Spring.
