My boss's husband is probably in line right now.  He cancelled their trip to Hawaii to get the phone.

Personally, I don't see the attraction.  But, then again, I still haven't bought into the iPod thing either.

We were watching TV last week and saw the commercial for it.

My wife, who could care less about gadgets, actually said "Wow".

I replied "if it got that reaction from you, try to imagine how I'm feeling right now."

Entirely too expensive, and entirely too many functions for me.

I want a cell phone that just sends and receives phone calls.  I don't need the internet, email, chat or a camera.  I certainly don't want to store and listen to music on it.  Just.  Voice.  Calls.

As cool as this phone looks, I would have a hard time shelling out 5 bennys for it!  I mean, it's just an ipod with a built in phone right? (I do realize it is much more than this, but for 500 bucks, that's all I can think about)

Oh, and 500 dollars = several race entries for 2008

My company is giving away one iPhone an hour to employees today. I have an 8/14,000 shot in getting one for free .

That would be nice, because I don't even own an iPod or MP3 player or anything. We're coming up on another giveaway in six minutes....

so there are 1750 employees?
if so, your odds would be 1/1750 in the first hour, 1/1749 in the second, 1/1748 in the third, and so on, assuming that nobody is eligible to win two.
so your odds would be slightly better than 8/14,000. bright side and all.

The price of cool - from "light reading" - techie web site

So if you go with the 4-Gig model and the cheapest plan, that's $580, plus tax and fees, up front before you turn the thing on. Let's add another $100, assuming you'll also want a carrying case, some cables, and a new Bluetooth headset so you can drive around without killing anyone.

What are we up to, $780?

Oh, there's an activation fee? Tack on $36. So that's $816 for the first month and about $660 for the next 11 months of service. Two-year minimum contracts? Okay, make it $816 plus $1,380 for about two years of service, assuming prices don't jump and you don't go nuts with texting or anything...

You're looking at a committment of $2,200 for a cool new phone.

And you can't put a price on cool.

No, there's 14,000 of us...and 8 are lucky enough to get one.

Heh, NOW you're talkin'! I just don't get why people froth at the mouth over these gadgets. HOW does the marketing machine have that much power over peoople??

edited to add: I don't race enough in a year to spend $500 bucks on race entries, but I sure could get some fun tri-related toys with the money.

Nope, no iPhone for me. I'll pass because I refuse to let the media tell me I HAVE to have something.

I'd be happy with a cell phone that did not keep dropping calls. It seems that as they add functions the original puprose keeps getting worse.

I already have Cingular, awsome by the way, and we went there today to have some numbers switched over to my wife's new phone and the guy said the only out of pocket expenses for me would be the $500 plus tax since I already have service. Still too expensive.

Spend 500 for a toy that you can use for a year or two...not too bad considering that there are people who question us triathletes for shelling out $400+ for an ironman race where we torture ourselves for 8 to 17 hours straight.

A year of phone calls and relaxing music or self torture.....we may be on the losing end of this equation.

Not a snowballs chance in August in Phoenix of me drooling over and overpriced ‘e-ball and chain’ like that.  Glad you like it though.  Just hope you didn’t geek out camp out to be one of the first to get one.

So unless the cost for monthly service is completely picked up by work, what does that run you?

Also covered by work, but you can get that here:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/pr/20070626plans.html#rateplans

It's not a phone for everyone, yes they are spendy, but if you don't buy that 250-350 ipod and get this instead it's like spending 250-150 on the phone, which is in line a blackberry or treo.  I still have my blackberry and it's not going anywhere soon.
