Go without?
Wear em under the goggles?

Gracias!!

Wear them under the goggles. Blind as a bat without them.

same here (I haven't done a tri yet but have swum for years with contacts),
no problems wearing them under goggles if goggles fit tight

I wear them under the goggles, but I wear the mask-ish type goggles (I think they are called aqua sphere) because the regular little ones really irritate me. I wear gas permeable hard lenses and with the mask-ish type goggles work great.

Someone told me that if I got kicked in the face my contacts would pop out - but I am blind as a bat without them, and I can't exactly afford prescription goggles/sport sunglasses. Has anyone had that happen?

Lasik.

Would be nice - don't have the money for that either I have a Masters in Lit and I live in the DC suburbs...needless to say I don't have a lot of extra cash floating around. Plus, I'm still a little unsure about the longterm studies; don't trust it enough right now.

It's a possibility, but would be a freakish occurrence. I've been swimming (or at least "playing in the water" with contacts for 35 years now, the only time I lost one was when I was like 16 and my sister hit me in the eye with an air mattress.

Cool

Tip: Put your cap on OVER your goggle strap(s)--helps keep them in place if you get hit/kicked/...

I too am blind as a bat without corrective lenses.  My eye doc fixed me up with the cheapest, yet functional disposable contacts just for racing.  They don't correct for the astigmatism but they work well enough to get from the water to the bike and back again.  I wear them to do the race then toss them out.    I raced all season last year without a problem using the contacts and goggles.  I use the larger goggles as well, makes me feel more protected then the small ones I use for training swims.  CapTex, last year, was the biggest and roughest swim start with a good bit of bump and grind, but I never lost a lense, even with a bit of water in my goggles.

Yup, heard that, and will do! And hopefully that will be enough!

Yep, wear the contacts. Goggles keep the water out. And, to those concerned about what will happen if you get kicked, if goggles come off, etc., I think the natural instinct is to close your eyes, so you should be fine. Have a spare pair or glasses in transition if you're really concerned, but you should be fine.

I actually race without them. Granted I am not blind without them. The first time I got in a pool with them (without goggles) they came right out. My goggles fit well but I still didn't want to chance losing them again. I don't think getting kicked or anything would make them come out though.

I wear them under my goggles.  I've only had a problem once with losing them.  Started off the blocks in a swim meet and the goggles came off and the contacts came out.

My optometrist did tell me to disinfect the contacts twice after swimming to help prevent eye infections.

Like many others that have responded I wear contacts under my goggles.  I got kicked in the face in my first tri and luckily didn't loose either contacts.  Other than that close call I haven't had any problems.  Just make sure you have a pair of glasses in transition just in case.

I wear them...wore them in my last tri, and will again this time. I would never find the buoys on the swim without them.

Even if you get your goggles knocked off, they should stay in while you put your goggles back on. I swim in my pool at home without them all the time and I have never lost one.

My fellow competitors will be glad I'm wearing my contacts!!!

Good luck

(holding my breath) I have never lost one in training or a race.  I was kicked and punched all throughout the Ironman swim.  I had to reset my googles 15-20 times because of water and one never popped out.

I wore my contacts, and didn't have a problem. I even had to deal with the goggles undoing themselves at the start of my wave, plus having to fix the fogging....never had a problem at all!

I wear them under my goggles. Have lost a few lenses with slippage during practice. Bought Rx goggles but they suck--leak bad and still dig into my face. Being closer to 50 than 40 my eye doc won't advise for Lasik "everybody develops cataracts at some point and we can get a better known correction at that time". My first race was pool swim, next 2 are OW and there's probably a bigger risk of losing lenses with the washing machine effect at the start. Having worn CL for 25 yrs I'm way too sun sensitive to wear regular glasses if I lose a lens on the swim. Ought to be interesting...

I wear my contacts under my goggles and do the cap-over-the-goggles thing in races.  Never had a problem.

My biggest issue with contacts is getting grit in my eyes on long bike rides.

I wear daily disposable contacts every day and I've never had an issue.  That said, I do keep a couple of extra lenses in my transition bag, albeit, I'm not sure that in the heat of transition I'd be able to stick my finger in my eye gracefully, but it makes me feel better.  Biggest issue is that I have to wear sunglasses ALWAYS when I ride or my contacts dry out & get grimy.  Makes for some interesting low light riding in the early morning & at dusk!
