help - how do folks deal with foggy goggles?

my last two OWS i was having real trouble cuz of my foggy goggles, especially since day 2 was cloudy and the water was, well, brown (i live in omaha - not a lot of clear water swimming in the area)

how do you deal with foggy goggles, is there a brand style, that works? a magic cleaner?

curious to hear what works

thanks!

Spit in them and rub it around a bit!  Just as good as anything for preventing the fog, and you don't have to worry about forgetting to take it to the race...

x3 on the spit.  works better than any anti-fog solution that I've ever purchased.

okay I asked the Triathlon "group" on myspace this same question and got many responses....

Baby shampoo
dish washing liquid
spit
"cat crap" [some product]
Rain-X Anti-fog

haven't tried any except the spit and haven't had good luck with it. Maybe my spit isn't the proper anti-fog concentration...

I've had better luck with spit than anything else I've tried, including anti-fog solution. It's a little gross, but it works like a charm. And I don't mind if it gets in my eye, which is something that can't be said for dish soap.

Maybe your spit is too watered down? I know that sounds gross but it is kind of in line with your statement that maybe its not the right anti-fog ratio. Don't think spit would work if you just took a big ol' drink of water. Of course, don't need to snort up a big slimer to make it work either...don't think you would be able to see through that any better.

On a less disgusting note...I have had best luck in races by not getting them wet in the first place. I find that if I put them on my face dry then there is nothing inside the goggles to fog up. That is of course if you follow the rule of no crying in triathlons!

Spit never works for me either. I've had good luck with TYR anti fog stuff. Spray it in dry goggles, wipe it dry with a towel, and you're good to go.

Spit never works for me and Johnsons Baby shampoo will work in a pinch but don't rinse it out too much.

My advice is to go to a scuba store and buy some mask defog from them. There are different ones but the one I like the best is called "Super Sea Drops." Just put a drop in each eye piece, rub it around a quick rinse and no fogging at all. There is another popular one that you will see a lot called PSI 500 but it is a paste that really has to be rinsed out. I am sure that they all work and the TYR stuff is probably the same.

+ another for the spit option.

It's cheap, works, doesn't put chemicals near your eyes (am I the only one worries about this?), can be redone in the pool without you getting shucked out for polluting the place and above all just plain works. Heck, if it works on scuba masks for 1hr+ dives then it'll work on my piddly little swim goggles

The ONLY thing I can get to work is Baby Shampoo, put a drop in, a tablespoon of water, rub it in well, and dump it out. No need to wipe/rinse - baby shampoo is tear free.

Spit, spit, spit. When I took SCUBA, my instructor swore by it and I think it works better than anything else. Free, portable, and you never forget it.

The anti-fog capabilities of my spit has never worked However, the more 'substanial' my 'spit' ahem, the better luck I have. Really though what I found ALWAYS works for me is baby shampoo. I go to the dollar store and buy the cheap stuff. Then, just put it in a little container you can ditch when the swim wave starts.

I use dish washing liquid. Put a drop or two in and wipe down with a towel then rinse. I find this lasts for 5 or 6 swims and then repeat.

I use spit in a pinch...

Thanks everyone!  Looks like spit is the overwhelming recommendation - I'll give it a try this weekend and see if i have defogger worthy spit - lol

if not, i'll move onto the baby shampoo, new goggles, and or professional defogging stuff

water needs something to condense on to form fog, so dirty lenses fog the worst.  Anti fog lenses actually have a very rough surface, so that water is sucked into the cracks, forming a thin film of water on the surface.  Fog drops will simply combine with the water surface instead of forming fog drops.  When that rough surface fills with crud (namely oil) fog will form.

Anti-fog stuff (and spit) form a thin hydrophobic (water repelling) layer that keeps fog away.

You can get a similar result (what I do) by washing (scrubbing) the lenses really well with baby shampoo (to remove the oils and crud) then rinsing really well.  The secret is to not touch the inside of the lens at all fith a bare finger (after beginning to rinse) and to store them in the hard plastic case they came in.  You can use any soap (you are rinsing it all out), but baby shampoo won't burn if some happens to stick in the gasket.  Oh yea, and if you can, don't dunk the goggles in the water before putting them on (if they are clean).  Just wet the gasket, or your face, to get the seal, put them on, then jump in the water.  If there's not a lot of water in there already, there won't be much to make fog.
