Subject: To race or not to race... next weekend
I need some advice from you all. I planned on racing in Jack's Generic Tri here in Austin next weekend. The race is only a sprint. I haven't registered for the race yet, because I caught the stomach flu (or something along those lines) last weekend. I've been sick since Saturday. I haven't been able to train and I can hardly stomach a meal but it is slowly getting better. I'm feeling better but still not 100%. Should I go ahead and race in 8 days or hang on a little longer and volunteer for this race? I'm going to be out there no matter what, but I can decide in what form. My nutrition has completely gone to Hades since Saturday. My body was wrecked. Training just hasn't happened since Saturday. However, I think I'll be able to train this weekend and next. Suggestions?

How was your preparation prior to getting sick? Were you on track to race?

If so, I'd say go for it.

Know thyself and be good to thy body. I assume you're doing all the good stuff like hydrating properly, replacing electrolytes, etc.

Sounds like the worst is over--if it is, eeeeease back into training ... if it feels good, continue; if not, don't. In any case I'd do slower/shorter sessions until you're at least 90% back. This may not happen in a week.

If you are good at holding yourself back, you could look at the tri as a training session. Take it easy, really enjoy the race and participants and spectators, stretch. The best case scenario is you might feel great and be able to kick in. But I wouldn't go in expecting to "race."

My preparation prior to getting sick was great. I was right on track and had raced a couple of weeks prior and even set a new PR.
