Subject: Mantra while running
Durring races I tend to chant to stay positive and focused. One of my favorites is Persistence Overcomes Resistance. I guess race runs are the only time I'm not wearing my Ipod. Does anybody else do this? If so, what do you say to your self?

last year during my HIM i started making up a song that went something like "Run, run run, I love to run.  RUnning makes me happy even though I'm feeling crappy."   I was singing it out loud at times, though I was probably partially delusional by that point in the race.

I guess that's not really what you're looking for here.

That is absolutely classic.  I love it and I'm stealing it.

I tend to do the whole Little Engine that could cheesiness "I think I can, I think I can."  Most of the time I'm thinking, "Oh, come on, come on, come ON.  Just RUN!"

A guy told me his mantra while we were running some tough hills, and it has stuck with me ever since:

There is no up... There is no down... There is only forward....

Oh my gosh. I get the craziest songs stuck in my head during the races! I only *wish* I could get some wise mantra circulating around in my mind.

The worst part is that I have ZERO control over the songs my brain selects. During my first tri run, it was that Maxine Nightengale (I know, right? WHO?) song: "Ooooh, and it's all right, and it's coming on, we gotta get right back to where we started from..."

And during the ride portion--up the tough climbs, it was the counting part of "Kiss Off" (Violent Femmes): "I take one-one-one 'cause you left me and two-two-two for my family and three-three-three..."

Sigh. I'm gonna borrow a nice zen-like phrase from one of you guys and try to force that into my head next time.

Ditto on stupid annoying songs...and I never know all the lyrics so it's always one or two lines. Yesterday it was Aerosmith's "My Girl", but only the lines "my girl's a bareback rider, my girl's a Lady Godiva." I'm not even a big fan of Aerosmith!

I heard a few good mantras from the pros listening to this podcast from Endurace Planet.

http://enduranceplanet.com/programs/07-16-07_Music.mp3

I particularly liked : "show 'em you're tougher than the rest, show 'em you're tougher than the rest"

For me it's an old REO Speedwagon song:

Keep Pushing
Keep Pushing
Keep Pushing on
Keep Pushing
Keep Pushing
When you think your strength is gone
Keep Pushing
Keep Pushing
Keep Pushing on

That song always works for me.

I find if I say something positive about myself, I do better in races.  The little voice in my head used to beat me up when I was hitting a rough spot. I have used this one for about two years with pretty good success:

"I am strong, I am trained, success is mine"

My mantra seems to be: "is that another pain? is that new? what happened to my knee just then? Is that going to worsen?"

Seriously, when the going gets tough and I'm trying to hold a pace, I repeat "I am the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria" from the Rage Against the Machine song 'Sleep Now in the Fire.' It doesn't make a lot of sense, but there you have it.

["I tend to do the whole Little Engine that could cheesiness "I think I can, I think I can."]

I use that one all during a race!

While running lots of times I think things like "Just to that telephone pole, just to that next block, etc... " Or stuff like "keep loose, keep hands low, shoulders down... breath easy"

I think stuff like "you can do it, breath easy, relax, relax, just keep striding" during the run. But, I tend to get this kid's song named "Nora's Room" stuck in my head on the bike because my first 25 mile bike ride followed a route that included Nora road. It goes, "Crash, bang, crash bang boom - something's going on in Nora's room. Crash, bang, crash, bang, boom, somethings going on in Nora's room. Sounds like girls, sounds like boys, sounds like someone's making lots of noise."

You could be right. I had to Google the lyrics just to find out for myself. Perhaps there are multiple versions of the song? (Oh my.)
