Who wants to start a pool on when I join the club?

Seriously, of all the things I've tried so far in training and just in general, for some reason, clipless just scared the poo out of me.  I can normally use fear as a motivator, but there was just some block.  I went for a swim today, and decided that when I got home, I was just going to ride around the neighborhood.  So I did.  Not too bad.  We'll see how the next couple rides go.

We started the pool when you first started talking about going clipless

The question is not if you'll join the club, but  when?

Yeah i already lost.... had my money on "before out of the house". Feels wierd the first few rides being locked into your bike doesnt it.

I am famous for clipping out of my right foot and leaning to the left. Dumb thing is that i always clip out my left... so why in the hell do i unclip the right ?????? guess lack of O2 to the brain

If you want to get some experience before you fall over (thereby significantly increasing the embarassment factor) switch out one pedal at a time.

Well, it took me 7 weeks to join the club! I didn't fall until two weeks ago with my clipless pedals. I got them around Memorial Day. I thought it wasn't gonna happen, then I fell on two rides back to back. I wasn't moving either time, just leaned the wrong way! LOL Got a bruised ankle the first time and no injuries the second because I got my other foot out but still fell. With my toe clips, I fell on my first ride, though, so I'd say I love clipless! They are awesome for climbing some of the brutal hills around here too. You'll really learn to love them, then as soon as you feel totally comfortable with them, you'll fall!! LOL

I'm still good after about 1 1/2 months. I always unlcip the left foot and lean left. I think I do this from riding motorcycles all of my life. Since the kick start is on the right you always lean left so it has kind of stuck with me. I'm still waiting for my time to come

The slow-motion falls are the best. Particularly the ones you do on a group ride, even after trying to key off the other riders unclipping.

Oh no the worst ones are the ones where you're at a dead stop, and fall trying to get going. Did that on a ride a couple weekends ago, and I STILL have the bruises to show for it.

Note to self - no matter how far ahead of the group you are, do NOT stop where you still have to go uphill more. Stupid stop signs part way up a hill.

No the worst ones are when you drop your chain going up hill and don't realize that you did until you are halfway over.  I did that last year, pedaling like mad and going no where fast.... right over.  Laying in the ditch looking up at the sky with the bike over top of me.  The only thing brused was my ego.

I just started using clipless this past weekend.  It took me an hour trying to get my left foot clipped in before I remembered I could adjust the tension.  After that, no problem!  I rode around in my front yard for a bit first to practice.  Fell twice in the grass.  Once on each side.  I have several bruises and a nice bruise/cut on my right calf that resembles my chain ring!  When I finally went out for a ride - 27 miles - no problems at all clipping in or out.  I hope I got all my falling out in the grass.

I joined the club last weekend just as my membership was about to expire.  I was coming to a light that I needed to turn left and was trying to find a break in traffic but slowed to much.  I chose to fall in the grass luckily but I am sure a few people in cars laugh, heck, I did.

I LOVE these stories! They really started my day off right!

I have been clipless for over 10 years so I don't think about it much, but it is great to hear the stories and remember all the great falls I had. Usually nothing bruised except the ego! I probably have not gone down in over two years (just by saying that, I'm sure I'm going to fall today!) - But I used to be an expert at the "horizontal track stand"

I have had many reason why I fell, but here is one: Make sure you check your cleats on occasion to make sure they stay tight. Nothing worse than trying to twist out of your peddle and having the cleat just twist on the bottom of the shoe - CRASH!!!!

Welcome to the world of clipless!  You will fall eventually...took me over a year until I joined the club in one careless moment at a stoplight loaded with cars and drivers staring at me like I was a buffoon.

On the flip side, you're riding will improve!  Once you relax a bit, concentrate on making big circles and/or mimmic the motion of scraping mud off the bottom of your shoe at the bottom of the circle.

It can be done.  I've been clipless almost a year and a half and haven't fallen yet.  I've even posted before that it hasn't happened yet and I've stayed fall-over free.  I've crashed twice, but it had nothing to do with being clipped in.

I know, it seems unfair doesn't it?  Amazing coordination, charming personality AND stunning good looks.

My first clipless experience: stopped at a traffic light and started to lean with my feet in. I knew I was going over so I reached out and grabbed a sign for support. The metal edge of the sign cut a deep gash into the web between two fingers but I stopped the fall. Rode home dribbling blood all over the bike and legs. But I know how to clip out now.

There's a lot of meat here, but let me ask but one question...Can we all be so lucky to have the coordination to swim into a concrete peir and suffer a concussion?

Oh, the ego.  It's almost as painful as the idea of falling...

Wow. Now that's some talent. Did you have to go far out of your way to hit the pier?

Yep, joined the clipless club last week and the clipless crash club today. Clever girl, I did remember to fall to the right, out of the road. Inexplicably I have road rash on my LEFT elbow and a bruised bump on my left ankle (looks suspiciously 90-degree pedal-shaped).

A clueless but trying-to-be-kind motorist who got there first on my right at a 4-way stop (having the right of way and passage) kept waiting for me to go (I know it confuses them when you slow down as you approach the intersection but don't fully stop). I waved him through and promptly fell over, crashing my bike into the curb.

He stopped and asked if I was okay. What a sweet guy, but, go already, GO!

Yes I did.  I decided that the swim course didn't have enough hills to be challenging and decided that doing the race with a concussion would make it difficult enough.  And it was a swim platform with two lifeguards standing on it who, apparently, were told not to interfere with swimmers even if they are about to injure themselves.

Oh, and good one Dan.

I joined the club at a stop light when I had the slow motion crash. It didn't help that all 4 lanes were stopped for the walk light so I could have the largest possible number of witnesses. My worst moment of club membership was during a charity ride when I pulled into the rest stop that for some reason was paved but suddenly became light gravel with a nice deep patch right in the middle. Front tire went down and I followed shortly after. It was that moment that you realize that if you could just put your foot down things would get better than made it all the better. I was able to spend the next 8 miles picking all the gravel out... free souvenirs!

If you could kindly indicate how many stop signs/ traffic lights are on your normal route it would help us potential pool members greatly.

Dagnabit, ALL of you owe me $39.95 for your yearly dues in the Clipless Crash Club. This club can't run on fumes, you know. We have to pay the bike gods their due in order to keep getting new members all the time.
