Here are links to the bike and run routes I mapped out. They're similar to what's available at the event site, but provides elevation information. And, if you want to get really geeky about it, you can download the data in CSV format and analyze to your heart's content!

http://www.mapmyrun.com/ride/united-states/va/bumpass/574759947

http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/va/bumpass/30898534

Please let me know if this is redundant or misplaced. I didn't find it anywhere else here at BT.

Thanks!  Hey, did you search for "Giant Acorn Bike" or "Giant Acorn Run" in the route tracker?  I made them a little while back, I think the city I put was Bumpass, VA.

update: I went and tried to find it.  I tried "Bumpass, VA"  "Bumpass, Virginia", nothing came back.  When I searched for "Bumpass" it worked.

Oh, I am *such* a newb! I hadn't gotten as far as learning my way around the training log. Now I see the routes link...and there's Giant Acorn. Cool -- thanks for pointing that out!

nope, it's not you.  I think that's a bug.  If I search by "Bumpass, VA" or "Bumpass, Virginia" I think the search should work.

Thanks, but you misunderstand: I hadn't even found the routes area of the training log -- I didn't know it was available. But I do now!

I'm probably doing this one too - and I was warned that although the Set-up Events website says the bike is "flat", that there is a rather long hill coming out of the park and that it's rolling in sections too.

Is anybody wearing a wetsuit for this one? The website talks about lake anna as being the heated lake. Heated by how much??

I'm going to, if nothing more than to give me all the help I can get with the swim. A few weeks ago, I asked Setup Events about wetsuits and water temp and they replied:

"You'll probably still want a wetsuit. The water at this end of the lake is 6-8 degrees warmer than the rest of the lake. Last year the water was 72 race day but 78 two days before! We got 2" of rain the day prior hence the lower temperature. Still, 72F water is pretty good for October!"

There's a nuclear power plant that uses the lake water for cooling and the effluent raises the temperature of the water nearby. Yes, seriously...

I'm gonna wear a wetsuit for two reasons 1.) it'll be October, and although the water may be fairly warm, it might be better just because it'll be colder out in general and 2.) I did so well on the swim portion of my first triathlon sans wetsuit, that WITH a wetsuit, I'll kick its a$$

Oh, and I'm just ridding my mind of the fact that the lake is heated by a nuclear plant...

As an employee of Dominion Power, I would like to state that their policy is to limit the fish population to 3 eyes apiece. I don't think that they any studies about newbie triathletes that are going to ingest gallons of water during the swim like me (it will also be my first).

I just found someone to work my weekend so now I'm in. Not to sure if I'll wear a wetsuit or not, but will bring it just in case it gets cold.  Oct is so iffy. Looking forward to it but sad that it'll be the last race of the season for me.

hey... looks like you're doing your first race soon.  hope it goes well.  To your question about the wetsuit...  from your logs it looks like you are working really hard in the pool.  Looking at your pace, you ought to wear a wetsuit if the race is wetsuit legal.

You will be surprised at how much more quickly you'll swim with the wetsuit.  For me, I swim about 15-20 per 100 yds. faster.

so wear one, if it is legal, regardless of the water temperature.  and if you haven't practiced with one, rent one for the week of the race, and get a couple practice swims in with it.

I am wearing the one I use for scuba diving. It is a super stretch so the transition shouldn't be too long (hopefully).

Keep in mind that a scuba wetsuit is not made the same as a tri-wetsuit. Tri-wetsuits are made for speed (and I believe they're made of different material, even) and constructed so that you have good range of motion in your arms and shoulders. It might be harder to swim in the scuba suit than just going without it. I'd test it out first, but it might slow you down. If you can, rent a tri-specific wetsuit. Bonzai sports in Falls Church (if you live around here) rents them on the cheap - that's where I plan on renting mine, since I can go in and try it on as this will be my second race, and first one with a wetsuit. But they also ship them as do other online places.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's a fast course, and none of the hills are much to worry about. There is a hill coming out of transition, but it's short (though a bit steep by local standards). Just keep it in the small ring for a few, then hammer away!

This was the only race I did last year, because of knee surgery, so I'm anxious to compare my times with last year.

Thanks - I can deal with small rolling hills. I just don't want to get duped again like I did with Luray, which they initially billed on Setupevents as "rolling" for the bike - and then after I'd registered, they changed it to "hilly" - and it sucked! It took me forever Hoping that doesn't happen this time.

I know - my plans keep getting foiled - gone this weekend with no free time, babysitting, etc. I had EVERY intention of hitting the gym this morning - see blog for details. Stupid contacts, eyes hurt and are shutting themselves...owie If I can figure out how to set up the trainer tonight, though, I'll spin on that - can't hurt myself just sitting in place even if I can't see.
