I'm going to go by the bible.  I was wondering if anyone out there has the templates built in Excel for the Annual, Weekly, Monthly training plans?  If you could pass it on, it would save me considerable time over building it myself and would be greatly appreciated.

But of course! Gimme a minute to make a "Blank" one and I'll post a link.

Go here to get it: http://www.aesdesigns.com/downloads/trainingplan.zip

For the Yearly Training Plan, just the Monday of the first week in C17 and the rest of the Mondays will fill in. I only have about half of the Annual/Weekly training hours filled in and I am working on putting the workouts for the 3 sports and strength training on their own worksheets. Not quite done yet, so I took it out... It should be enough to get you started though...

No problem. Glad I could help. One more thing for the community - on Sunday, I will lock myself in the laboratory (kitchen) and develop Frank-n-gel(tm). I've been doing some research and think I can come up with something good. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. I'll have to visit the homebrewing store for a 3 pound bag of maltodextrin, it's the one ingredient I don't have at the moment. Sad thing is, I can buy a couple pounds of maltodextrin for what a pack of carb gel costs... That kind of markup reminds me of an Ice Tea factory I did some work for once...

Thanks for the rave review, but I am but a mere scribe. Friel is the one that came up with all of that stuff. I just tried to put it all into one place...

True. Y'know those expensive bodybuilding "weight gain powders"? Maltodextrin. Talk about turning a profit.

Frank,

I have experimented with this myself and unless you have tried this before, some tips that I have found might help (and a website that I found on the subject http://www.mtnphil.com/GU.html).

First, maltodextrin makes a gel without having to add anything else to it...I was told that you needed to add pectin to make it work, I added way too much pectin and it didn't work. Still tastes fine, but it's really weird.

Second, make sure you use the alcohol based flavour (or add alcohol) to remove the aftertaste.

Finally, make sure you keep the heat to it for a significant period of time to make sure everything dissolves.

Good luck,

Shane

I've been working on a .xml that will calculate how much power/energy used during your training based on distance traveled/time. I then go on to compare between disciplines so that you can monitor your progress. It's still in the works...but Ron still hasn't had time to check it out (he's a really busy guy no doubt) and I was wondering if I could get your opinion on it so far? It might even be a nice addition to your logs (which I checked out and are nice).

Let me figure out where I'm going to put this thing on the web and then I'll provide a http with a short summery on how to use it...

You can get the d/l here

All you need to do: Under each month enter in a distance and time (boxes are highlighted). The formulas should calculate an energy # and then the pie graph to the right will show you how much energy you have exerted for each discipline...from here you can see if your workouts are equal between each discipline. I'm still working on the formulas but I feel the run and bike formulas are good, it's the swim that might need some tweeking.

Let me know if you'd like more info on how I came about some of my formulas...and don't forget, this is still a rough draft project so all ideas are welcome!

oh and the swim distance is in meters swam...i will make adjustments for different measurements in the future.

Frank,

Thanks.  This is great.  I was planning to build a spreadsheet, but you have already completed it.

Frank,

I was looking at the training spreadsheet and just now understood the 3 pictures of your avatar on the spreadsheet...Frank - swimming; Frank - biking; and Frank - running.  Cool!

My South Park alter egos are there to remind me not to take this stuff to seriously. For whatever reason, I laugh (OK, giggle) everytime I see them, and it puts me in the right frame of mind when working on my training plan. This is supposed to be fun, right? Well, for me it is.

Here's an update with the completed weekly training hours worksheet and the cue cards for the swimming workouts

Thanks for the website. Some nice insight in there.

I don't plan on using any pectin. The "stickiness" of GU is the one thing I don't like about it. Another thing i've found from working with maltodextrin before is that low or no heat works best - give it some time, it will dissolve. Too much heat tends to rip the md into more simple sugars that don't taste "right." Also, mechanical agitation can rip it apart too, so you need to be gentle I'll post my findings in the Smootie Cafe forum.

Frank, that spreadsheet was really awesome! I'm glad I stumbled across it!

Have you made any additional updates to it?

Thanks a bunch... You saved me a lot of time!!!

I haven't made any updates yet. I do plan on adding the rest of the workout "cue cards" for running and cycling this week and the combo and strength training workouts next week. That should do most of it...

Frank...awesome job...I like the look & feel of the spreadsheet and plan to upgrade to it shortly.  I had been using http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=9839 - I posted it looking for prep / AA weight phase feedback.  Maybe there are some little things in the sheet you can use for your next release - but then again, maybe not...you've taken this to a new level.  Nice work...Rick

I took Frank's original and added some of my own stuff to it.  The spreadsheet is attached.  Most of this, I print out and put in a binder.  I like writing my data to paper in addition to putting it in the training logs on this site.  There is just something really satisfying about writing it down on paper.
