cjfleischer - 2007-10-09 12:45 AM Where do you all find listings for races that far out? I can only seem to find 2007 races, most of which are now done and I want to start planning for next season. Sorry for the newbie question here. ~Cat

Most races fall on the same weekend dates year-to-year. Trifind.com, active.com, marathonguide.com.

I was looking at the couch to sprint and couch to Olympic training plans and they look great except for the fact that they are both centered around time and not necessarily distance or drill work.

  • I guess I could just stop being a cheap skate and get a membership here and get a more detailed training program.

When you said get a membership at "this site", did you mean BT, or OpenTri? BT has wonderfully detailed training plans with drills, intensity and the works for people with paid memberships. I looked briefly at the Open Tri site. i don't know the coach adn I'm sure he's got good credentials. But look at the forums. Nearly every post has only 1 reply. Compare that to BT where several hundred people are online and posting at once!

Becoming a member also opens up a new set of forums for you to post in and learn from.

So I hope that's what you meant when you said you'd get a membership...

This next season will be my first tri season, so I honestly do not know what I will be doing. It is also extremely difficult for me to plan out anything because I have to also plan child care for my kids. Sometimes I try to get child care first and then book a race and sometimes I do it the opposite... but right now I'm sitting with a 10K coming up and no child care

But all that aside, I am planning on doing a couple local sprint tris and then planning on LifeTime Fitness tri in Minneapolis. I was a spectator this last year and it was a phenomenal race!

Hopefully in 2009 I will actually just be able to plan the season with no worries. By that time my kids would be old enough to hang out at a race with out an adult with them.

The best races in Minnesota fill up fast, so I usually have all my entries decided and sent in by 3/1.

no one should be surprised at how much some here plan things out. I think by nature Tri folks are planners and goal oriented. Just makes sense really. You have to plan to put in 5 or 10 or 20 hours a week towards training or it will not happen.

    Oh yeah . . .
my 2008 is coming together now.

Years past when I was just a runner I was totally planned out. 13.1 in Indy in may, 13.1 in Detroit in Oct, plus many local 5k-15k races.

I have my offseason planned out . . . it starts in less than 2 weeks. Then I have the start of training for in-season planned out including the day it starts. I need to get stronger and faster this winter, along with dropping some weight. Then I have my race goals.

    70.3 in July in Muncie.
No Indy May 13.1 for me, which is unusual for me.
Not sure what I will do after Muncie . . . another 70.3 in the early fall maybe? A half or full Marry in fall? Some shorter stuff?

No, I get that - I am very plan and goal-oriented, which is why I'm asking! But 2008 will be my first "real" full season, and so I am just curious as to how I should go about fitting in as many races as I want to do and planning appropriate training in between. This summer was my first triathlon, so I started in May and picked a race about 12 weeks out, set up a training plan and trained for that race. I have a training plan set up for the winter and once I figure out what races I want to do, then I can try to plan around them.

wurkit_gurl - 2007-10-08 3:29 PM  I also might try to shoot for an Oly at the very end of the season - just finishing it, nothing crazy. Is that crazy? (Assuming I really whoop my a$$ into shape over the winter)

    I'm planned out through my 2008 mid-season A-race.

If you're using the Friel TTB, plug and Olympic race into the plan and work backwards using training volumes that are in typical OLY plans (like the one's here on BT). The volume for the period that coincided with Base 1 is pretty light. The key to increasing to any distance (from sprint to OLY, OLY to 70.3) is consistency. Do the training. The fitness will be there. My person experience has been this: Do 80% of the training, the fitness will still be there but you will kick yourself because you won't be as fast as you might have been. Do 70% of the training, and you'll finish but it will hurt more. Any less than that, you're in for a rough day and maybe DNS isn't such a bad idea.

For me, going from sprint to OLY wasn't a big deal. Going from an OLY to 70.3: big deal. Everything to consider (training, recovery, nutrition, the plan itself) is present for any distances, but when you go long a mistake in any one area is harder to overcome on race day.

Let's just say I've been dreaming about my 2007/2008 season since my last tri in March this year.

I've been reading books, training, trying to work out how much time/money I want to invest.  Whether I'm ready for the QTS distances or just the sprints...

AND I've been checking the two major queensland sprint series websites every week since August to see when they'd be coming online...

     O_O

AND NOW THE 2007-2008 SEASON IS HERE!  ARGH!!!

Almost 6months of daydreaming/training/spending is finally coming to fruition... I hope it works!

It depends on how serious you are or how much time you want to spend training?

Just To Finish: 12-20 weeks prior.
    To Compete: 24-36 weeks prior
To Place In AG: 40 weeks prior.
To complete in IM: 48 weeks prior.
Elites/Pros: most only take 1-2 weeks off per year.

I indicated in my original post that 2008 will be my first REAL, full tri season. This past May, I decided to do a race, never having done any competitive sports in my life (I used to dance) and so trained for about 12 weeks up to the race - my only goal was to finish. I ended up doing another race last weekend as well. I am already starting a new training plan on Monday, which will take me through the winter into March/April and I hope to get better so that I can actually "compete". I plan on sticking to sprints for now, however, I would like to at least finish an Oly (don't care about times) by the END of next season (August, September). My curiosity was more along the vein of "how many races do you plan far in advance" and "how, after training all winter, do you then train for each race, with adequate tapering, trasition, rest time, etc in between"?

But at least maybe I can attempt to place in my AG by 2009. I'll be 28, so at the top end of my AG, but I'm small and light, so that might help get past the 25 year olds if by then, I am awesome
