Subject: Anti-Fog drops (dumb) Question

Hi all,

One quick semi-dumb but valid question, how and when do I have to apply the anti-fog drops to the goggles; inside, outside, before or at the water?

Thanks...

I put a drop on the inside of each lens, smear it around with my finger and swish the goggles in the pool water (or you quickly run them under a faucet in the locker room).  You don't want to completely rinse out what you just smeared, but you want enough off that you can see and your eyes won't sting if some gets in them. I then shake out the goggles and put them on.

Can I piggyback another "semi-dumb but valid question" on here?

Does the antifog drops work on sunglasses? I find with the colder weather, my sunglasses get fogged when I'm running from my breath being so much warmer than the air.

I ended up just taking them off at my race last weekend (after distrupting several peoples running rhythm by dropping them on the course while trying to wipe them ) because I couldn't see anything through the fog on them.

I have that problem with sunglasses when I go skiing.  Last year the boyfriend bought something call "Cat Crap" (http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=608&memberId=12500226).  Great name, I know, but it works like a charm!

The way I do no fog for both my diving mask and swim goggles is to put it on the inside (the outside will be completely wet when your face is in the water, therefore keeping the outside de-fogged) BEFORE getting the mask/goggles wet. Let it sit for a minute after you rub it in really well. Rinse the no fog out right before you put the mask/goggles on your face. You end up with suds if you didn't rinse enough or fogging if you rinsed too much. *Bonus Tip* - no charge - If it's warm out and the water is cool, splash a good bit of water on your face before putting on the mask/goggles. Nothing like putting a cool mask/googles (remember, you used the cool water to rinse them) on a warm face - instant fog Also, dunking your face in the water works too. Once you get over the "HOLY CARP (typo intended) this water is cold" inhalation of water, the cool water on your face brings on the mamalian dive reflex which will relax you a little.

Cat Crap ROCKS!!! Big fan of their lip balm too! Plus, the giggle factor when someone sees the stuff is prices less

good question! I never tried antifog drops but what works for me is a drop of ultraswim shampoo(any shampoo) on the inside of each lense, rub to coat lense and then rinse the excess. That one was from TSME from total imersion and it works really well for me

I've also heard that a little toothpaste smeared on the inside lens works. Never tried it, but thought it was interesting.

Toothpaste works ok, but it's harder to rinse off. Also, since most swim goggles have plastic lenses, a coarse toothpaste could scratch the lenses up. As a diver who loves gadgets (plus as a Divemaster for the shop, I get samples), I've tried just about all of the commercial defog juices. For the price, you can't beat spit. However, if you eat power bars close to swim time (and you don't want any of that in your goggles), I would recommend J&J baby shampoo. Works well and "No Tears"

cat crap is AWESOME and I totally use it for my sunglasses on winter rides....just be CAREFUL to use a clean cloth or you'll end up scratching your sunglasses without even knowing it until you put them on.

as for goggles....i just lick the inside of them...got that from diving while living in Guam when I spit in my mask.

gross, but it works for me.

I'm sorry, I just can't stand CRAP, cat or otherwise, in my goggles!  I put a little liquid soap in mine while showering (before hitting the pool), rinse lightly, then dunk/rinse once in the pool.  I've had no problems, and better yet, the rec center keeps plenty of liquid soap in the dispensers for me!

Yikes! You would think that a commercial no-fog wouldn't do that to an eyeball... Spit or J&J. Unless of course, you've eaten hotwings for your pre-race breakfast and use spit. THAT would be bad too.
