Probably my biggest hurdle with weightloss is Pepsi, Dr. Pepper and southern sweet tea.  I love soda and sweet tea.

I have been able to cut sweets out and eat more moderately most of the time, but I have a hard time cutting out the liquid candy.  I normally have probably 48+ oz of soda a day. I hate the flavor of diet soda.

Anyway, I have been hovering in the 223-225 range for several weeks and I commited to myself, my wife and the co-worker that I do lunch with that this week that I would not have any liquid candy (soda or sweet tea or any other sort).  Only exception will be gatorade and I only use that on long rides once or twice a week.

Anyway, want to traverse with me or what is your goal for this week?

Best of luck to you.

I was able to switch to diet coke when we lived in Japan because their soda is sweeter than US soda. However, giving up sweet tea was one of the toughest things I've ever done. I was weaned on it, being from Louisiana, and man oh man was it tough to quit making it. I finally just started reducing the amount of sugar I put in mine. Once I got where I couldn't stand to reduce any further I just gave up making it period. What a sacrifce! LOL

Hey now, you can do this.  Liquid candy is for kids -- adults drink lemon fizzy water, fresca, and perrier.

When they're not drinking beer or wine, that is...

Seriously -- going sugar-free in the drinks dept. will really help you.  Good Luck!!

Cheers, -Sunny

Giving up soda is hard. I was able to do it over a period of time a few years ago. If you do fountain pops, try mixing diet with regular for a while, slowly cutting down one the sugar one.

A few of my favorite sodas are sprite zero, diet pepsi max, and diet dr pepper.

I was afraid to calculate how many calories I have been consuming in soda.  I normally don't drink more than 16 ounces during the weekend as we don't have it in the house but during the week at an average of 48oz a day that is 600 calories.

5 days * 600 calories = 3000 calories (that is 1lb right there)

20 more oz is another 250 or so.

Wow.

I can do Diet Dr. Pepper or Mountain Due ok but really, the taste is not worth consuming the chemicals to me.  Pepsi on the other hand....

Quitting soda wasn't nearly as hard as quitting beer/captain morgan. I wasn't able to make the transition to diet soda....can't stand the stuff. I feel your pain. I do still allow myself to drink once a week, but now the captain goes with diet coke (cutting corners where i can). Good luck to ya.

Well, I am not doing so well.

I broke down this morning and had about 12oz of Pepsi.  Yesterday I had the same.

That is still a huge reduction and I expect it will help.  I am not giving up.  Right now, I have a bottom of water on my desk rather than a 32oz Pepsi.

Half way through the week.  I have had a total of about 24oz of non-diet soda.

Yesterday I went to lunch where I ordered a deal with a drink and he said they had un-sweet tea.  Due to his english issues, I ended up with a small coke and no other options other than their tap water..  The pizza wasn't any good either.  We probably won't be back.

Weigh in last night at 221.5.  I may be cheating a little though as a gave blood on Tue and I am sure a pint of blood weighs a pound or so.  Don't know how long before your body replaces it.

I given up on most sugar including gatorade. I avoid that stuff also since it has super huge high in sugar.

I have an almost "sugarfree" sports drink now. I think its sugar but a better form.

I can not personally relate to your liquid candy problem, because I am good to go with a lemon squeezed into my water. But, it seems like you would be better to wean yourself off the sodas. If you normally consume 48oz a day, try doing just 36oz/day for one week, then 24oz/day for the next week, etc or something along that line. No one expects you to go cold turkey and not slip up. Take it slow because your body is probably addicted to all the extra sugar.

Well, as of today, I had about 48 oz the whole week of any drink with sugar including OJ a couple times.  That is a big change.

I saw it on the scale too as I hit 221#, down 2lbs.  I have not yet lost more than one pound in a week.

I am going to continue this week.  It is really tough for me to not have a soda in the morning.  So the few times, I did, I had a small rather than medium or large.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Now, I am feeling sick, coming down with a cold.  I hope I get over it quick.

Best of luck!

After being a caffeinated soda addict for the better part of a decade, I've given it up. About 2 years ago I stopped consuming caffeine(never drank coffee), the first few months without Mountain Dew were tough. Then about 8 months ago I stopped all soda and again going without orange Crush was tough for a month. Now I don't even miss soda, I don't crave it or anything any more. So I can tell you that it does get easier as time goes on.

Thanks

Well, I got on the scale this morning and I am down to 219# even.  I have been successful with cutting back to 1 small soda in the morning or 1 cup of coffee.  Going to zero is super tough for me.  Just a few minutes ago, I was thinking I would really like to have a soda.

Anyway, I have tried to keep a water bottle full of water so that when I get the thirsty urge, I can go for water.

Just an update.  I have kept at keeping the sugar soda and sweet tea at bay.  I have settled on one 12oz  soda or cup of coffee in the morning and then it is water the rest of the day and sometimes 4-6oz of OJ or grape juice.  I have also virtually had no other deserts except on Thanksgiving eve and Thanksgiving (I made homemade cannoli and could not pass that up )

I was at 219 a few days ago and I will weigh tonight and I think I will be 218.  My goal was 217 before my event next Sat and I think I will make it.

Well, I finally got to the scale at the gym and I was 216lbs.  Wooohooooo.  I knew I had lost a few more... I could just feel the difference but I was surprised to be 216.  So excited.  I hit my goal short term goal and more.

Great job!! Kicking the soda habit can be rough! But the results on the scale should be some pretty fabulous motivation!

Thanks.  I fell of the wagon just a little the last few days as I had a few extra sodas but nothing to have a big impact and still much less than what I was consuming.

I had about 10 spoons of ice cream last night too.  I have not had any ice cream in months.

Of course, I bought our family a ice cream churn for Christmas.  My 4 kids are going to go nuts and we may have some ripe strawberries from our garden by then.  Yummie.

Maybe try sweet tea made with Splenda. It is not quite as good, but almost. This will also keep the carb count waaayyyy down.

This is a good point.  Most of the time, now, if I want something other than tea and this is usually at lunch, I will get unsweet tea and use sweet-n-low.  I don't like splenda much at all.  I don't really like sweet-n-low either but I am more used to it.

By the way.  On the scale this morning after an hour bike ride.  214lbs.   Woooohoooo again.

I knew I lost a little more.  I have gotten to the point that I can feel it when a few more pounds are gone and I get the urge to go to the neighborhood gym and weigh in.

So you are down about 10 pounds since cutting back the soda?  Awesome.  I guess you were right on with the pound a week estimate.   ALso think about your extra 10-15 bucks a week you are saving in cans of soda.  You just paid for all your race entries next year at least!

Yes, but actually, I was doing the calculating yesterday and before cutting out the soda, I was loosing about 1lb a week although did hit a plateu.  After getting rid of 80% of the soda, I have been loosing about 1.5lbs per week.

I was thinking about the savings too.  It was $1.75 for the large soda I would get in the morning and then a free refill in the afternoon at our office deli.  That is $8.75 a week.  Wow, it adds up quickly.

This thread gives me hope!!

I'm a die-hard Diet Pepsi drinker... love love LOVE it.  Have cut down to about 3-4 cans a day, and while the calories aren't a problem, I think the carbonation and aspertame aren't playing well with the rest of my body.  So, I decided to enjoy it for a couple more weeks and then go cold turkey starting with the new year.

I'll get my caffeine (which will be weaned out of my diet, but NOT YET!) through coffee, which I really don't enjoy so I won't drink a whole lot of it.

Hearing that other people have done it, and get to a point where they don't crave it makes me feel better about this whole wacky idea of mine.
