NAME: Joe_H
STORY: started in '96 doing tri's when I was looking for a challenge. I returned to running after an long love affair w/ beer and fatty foods. I started running and lost weight and felt great. I found a local tri and trained hard for it. then discovered I was a type 2 diabetic. I did that first tri and was hooked even though I nearly drowned and got passed by everyone and their brother. since 96 I've done about a countless sprints, half dozen oly'ss 3 Half IM's, and 3 marathons. Some went well and some were complete disasters but I survived and keep coming back for more. I use training to control my sugars and as therapy.

FAMILY STATUS: Married w/ two little rug rats

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm just trying to juggle it all - family, work and training.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: slow year - broad st run, Quakerman oly tri and a bunch of little 5k's
2008 RACES: Broad St. Run, Road trip to IMLP as a cheerleader, Steelman oly, Quakerman oly, American Zonfigen Du Short Course maybe the philly marathon

WEIGHTLOSS: started out in '96 about 220 now I'm about 178

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: I'm a BOPer but LOVE this sport and it is my passion. I am constantly reading/watching/learning and if I don't know it I can find someone who does.

Joe, I would love to join your group!
I am a type 2 diabetic as well, and one of my goals this year is to get more serious about exercise. A friend of mine challenged me to do a triathlon in August, and I accepted. So here I am!

My goals for this year are to do a 5k in May and a sprint triathlon in August.

I am currently doing the "Couch to 5k Aggressive" plan and I should be finished with it sometime in April. Then I'll start my training plan for the sprint. The plan is to get a base with my current plan and then get ready for the sprint.

Thanks for this opprotunity, I'm really looking forward to it.

Hi there,

New as it could be to this type of thing, both sitting writing on a web page and planing training etc. Thought that it could be a good thing for me to get back in to shape again and since this seems to be a fun and challenging sport, it would be something to try out rather than just going for the occational jog around the park. Bit more structure to the training.

If possible I would like to join your group since it looks like we have some what similar time schedules. I am married times two, work and wife, and is trying to get the time to match it all together. Due to this it would be good with a mentor that understands a bit more what it is like to juggle the time and trying it all to work out, thus I think that you could be a good mentor.

A bit of background info: I have been involved in sports most of my life, did my military service as a diver in the navy (think Swedish) and from there on it has gone down hill with my training. Currently living in Tokyo, Japan since 5.5 years and am as I mentioned married both to my lovely wife as well as to work. Working days here are about 10-13 hours a day so this makes this even more interesting trying figure out how the training is going to get squeezed in there...but if we don`t try we are never going to know if it is going to work out or not, right.

Goals for this year. Get back in to shape and being able to kick my bosses rear end in a 5km/40km/5km or 10km race by this summer.

I think that is the 30 sec introduction on me. Please let me know what your thoughts are and honesty is always appreciated if you do not think that I am going to be able to be of addition to this forum.

Cheers.

/HW

If you still have space, I would like to join the group.

I did my first triathlon in September and completely fell in love with the sport! I did a sprint race on my mountain bike and it took me 2:15 but I didn't care...I had so much fun! I am starting my training program for this year and I am looking for advice, encouragement, etc to keep me going. My goals for 2008 are 2 sprints and 1 Olympic. I also plan on doing the Lance Armstrong Challenge bike ride in October.

I am married and live in Seattle. No kids, but two four-legged friends. I work at a local police department and I am still learning how to juggle it all.

Thanks!

plenty of room KO! congrats on your first tri! juggling it all is hard (even crazier with the police dept shifting schedules) but doable. welcome to the sport and site!

Hi Joe,

I have been an exercise drop out for the past few years as a result of the action packed stress filled business that I own. I've been attempting to get back on track for the past 8 months but was further sidelined when I broke my ankle while playing tennis last July. Recovery has been slow but steady.

My group of running buds convinced me to train for a tri (sprint) in mid July and I need all the help that I can get. Would love to be a part of your mentoring group if you will have me.

Joanne

Hi, Joe.

My name is Nan Tuckett (really), and I want to be one of your "mentorees."

According to my driver's license I'm 60 years old. (I have no idea how that happened. One day I just looked in the mirror, and this middle-aged woman looked back. I swear she wasn't there the day before. And THAT was 15 years ago.)

Anyway, here I am . . . looking for a challenge . . . and setting my sights on the Philadelphia Women's Triathlon on July 6. I've never done anything like this before. Gulp!

I'm not quite a couch potato, but I haven't engaged in any regular, planned exercise program either. Last summer I DID spend a week bicycling from D.C. to Pittsburg--350 miles including a 67 mile day with a 22-mile continuous climb up and over the mountains. Unfortunately, in October I fell during the 40-mile Tour-du-Port here in Baltimore and broke two bones in my thumb. My first athletic injury! How cool is that?

So now it's January 1, and those promises I made to myself about "next year" are staring me in the face. It's time to get started. If I can just avoid all those easy excuses: I really need to work late to finish that special project, I'll work out as soon as I finish this book, It's too cold, the gym is too crowded, 5:30 am is way too early to get moving, . . .

The gym opens tomorrow!

Nan

I see a couple of you are keeping logs here at BT and this is a fantastic idea. it lets you keep track of your progress and helps you figure out how things affect your training/racing (as well as keeping you motivated) I have been using an excel spreadsheet that tracks everything in my life from workouts, meals to meds and other stuff on my home computer but I think I will start logging in here as well

Hi there everyone,

Just wanted to say Happy New Year and wish everyone a good 2008.

For those with experience of this sport you are most welcome to send me any links that you have found helpful in your training, anything that you can come to think of. Currently I am learning how to use my new toy, HR monitor. So I can cream my boss...good idea or not it is going to be fun. At least I hope so.
For those with no experience with but with ideas, I am all ears.

Cheers.

Hi everyone!

Do any of you know of a good, relatively inexpensive indoor bike trainer? The Seattle weather this time of year is not condusive to much outdoor riding and I really don't like the stationary bikes at the gym - they are so uncomfortable!

Thanks!

how much are you looking to spend?

mag trainers are cheapest but are the loudest, fluids are quieter and have a more realistic resistance (or so I'm told) rollers are supposedly the best bike simulation but are a little dangerous. computrainers are top of the line but are easily over $1K and you need a computer to hook up to it (tacx makes imagic/fortius for less but not sure they are as good)

cyclops, kinetics, tacx are all good brands

check:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/item_list.cfm?estore_ID=1486&cm...

http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?cat=Turbo%20Trainers

and if those don't fit you budget check ebay & craigslist (just be very careful)

Just came back from a run in my newly purchased shoes, it does such a difference. It does not sound like I am running in stepping shoes any more.

There is one question I would like to ask. When I bike for 30 min plus at a high pace my lower back starts to hurt. Does anyone know why this occurs? And more important are there any quick fixes for this? More training, different riding style....

all ears open

might be the bike fit. if there is a good bike shop near you they can make sure you and bike together correctly. a good bike fit = a more comfortable ride. here in the US a bike fit goes for around $50-100 USD
