Life is good! I did my usual February half marathon and cycling is back on TV. Spring is close! The race temperature was 50 degrees. That was around 30 degrees warmer than I have been training. I made myself drink more and I upped my salt intake. I finished with no cramps which for me is a win. The takeaway, pay attention to the race conditions and don’t be afraid to change your game plan.

Still feel terrible. I did 4.5 mile jog in 50 minutes on Thursday and 12.15 miles biked in 40 minutes. I literally had to stop running after 3 minutes. I have been sick and my chest is stil filled with junk. BUT last night my demo Zoot Ultras arrived. A pro triathlete who shall remain nameless sent me one of the 3 pairs he received as a sponsored athlete. they say "demo product. not for re-sale". And I know they've been getting mixed reviews but they are awesome (excuse my french). They are 8ozs or so but they have a supportive feel and forefoot. I am not back on my feet but I ran a fairly flat 1.5 miles in 12:20. I have run 1.5 in 11 minutes before but still for my first time the shoes were like running in air. No blisters or any issues. great lacing system and sockless design. i am in love.

but they are outdoor only. if you wear them on a treadmill your shins and knees will bark for a few weeks.

Dale, nice job on the half! I bet it felt good to be running outside in nice weather.

Terry, Nice video, looks pretty professional to me. Good Luck! Congrats on getting the swim in as well.

John, I'm glad your feeling better. As my doctor said "those chest boogers take a long time to go away". Hang in there!

I finally got a decent week of training in. I've lost a lot of fitness, but it feels great to be back in the game. Did a four mile run today followed by two hours of shoveling snow. I hope spring gets here soon! I went down to the local bike shop on saturday and made an appointment to get the fit kit done this week. I am so stoked for a new bike!

Take care everyone!

EvoTri narrowed it down to 10 people today and I didn't make the cut.  On March 1st they'll announce the 3 that made it.  Oh well, it was fun thinking about it anyway.

John, glad to see you are feeling better!

The office is closed today, so I had a good swim and a good ride (albeit cold!) today.  I'm going to do my best to swim twice a week.

Dale, do you lift weights?  Feb 2008 Triathlete mag had a Mark Allen 70.3 training program in it and he has a weightlifting routine in there.  I saw the lifting is only 45 minutes twice a week and is on the long run days.  I have a "Total Gym" and I'm working on duplicating his routine; i.e. workout at home w/o joining a gym.  Any comments (from anyone) on weightlifting or incorporating it into a training plan?   March Triathlete mag has another article on lifting as well.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to do weights. As we get older it gets more important to slow bone loss. Weights are like swimming, technique is very important to keep from getting injured. Most tri programs call that the fourth discipline.

Hang in there John. It's going to take time. Just enjoy the fact that your up and moving.

As far as weights go for me, I try to fit one session per week in, but it doesn't always happen. I try to concentrate on a core workout with biceps and triceps thrown in if time permits. I have read a lot of recommendations that core strength training really helps stabilize the upper body when biking. My doc also has stated that some ab-work will alleviate some of the lower back pain that I sometimes get.

I have often wondered if I should be doing any weight training with my legs. They are usually too tired from running or biking to lift anyway though!

The Feb issue of bicycling magazine had a nice article on core conditioning. It looked perfect for those of us who are regularly held captive in hotel rooms, or for those without access to weights.

5 miles in 42:30 in my Zoots last night. Too bad that both feet now have 3" lines of blisters and are very sore - like they've been brush burned. Not liking the sockless wear.

I do leg curls and hamstrong curls every time I bike indoors. Just 3 sets of each with light weight. I feel my muscles really get a good workout if I do them after I bike and run and before I swim.

I got my weight routine finished and created a template in my blog.  Got part of the routine done this morning.  Marmadaddy's BT quote "A short workout is better than no workout." was an inspiration.  Was supposed to swim this morning, but freezing rain moving into the area nixed that idea.  A business trip to KY today was cancelled due to the ice storm up there.

Sorry to hear about the Zoots, John!  I can't imagine running (or biking) without sox.

I know what you mean about blisters. I have had the same problem when I go sockless. You can try vassoline or body glide. I just take a few more seconds and use socks. I keep a small hand towel near my shoes in transition and do a quick wipe then put the socks on. BTW, don't forget to put some powder in your bike and running shoes on race day. Your feet are going to be wet and this helps with trench foot.

Hey Everyone,

What a fantastic day today! I brought home a new bike! After several trips to the local bike shop I finally got the fit kit done. It was a bit intimidating standing in the shop with my cycle shorts on, holding a measuring stick in my groin, and having two grown men measure every part of my body! They actually did a fantastic job, made me feel very comfortable, and were very informative.

Based on what I told them I was interested in and the measurements they came up with, I test rode three bikes, a Cannondale Synapse, a Specialized Roubaix, and a Felt Z35. Right away the Specialized and Felt were a great fit, the Cannondale not so much. After riding them for a while I finally decided on the Felt. It was a great experience and I am completely satisfied knowing I got a great bike and a great fit.

I ended up picking up an indoor trainer as well, since I don't think the roads will be clear here for at least another six weeks. The trainer came with a free TrainRight DVD too.

Looking forward to some time in the saddle now

Congrats Tim! Hopefully the weather will clear and you take her out for a spin. We have new shop in our area. They handle De Rosa. I have been lusting after an Italian goddess for many years. I better stay away from that part of town for a while. There is no easy way to hide a new bike from the wife

Thanks for the nice comments guys! I broke her in today on the trainer while watching stage 6 of the tour of california. It was fantastic!

Dale, don't avoid the bike shop too long, your only delaying the inevitable!

Terry, thanks for posting up the pic, that's the one! I took a look at the other photos in your album. Looks like you have a nice little bike shop in the garage.

John, I don't know how to post up a pic yet either, sorry. Hope the feet are recovering nicely.

Have a nice weekend!

Woke up to a nasty sinus infection Sunday morning.  Had a swim and a ride on tap after church, but that was nixed.  Layed around the house all day yesterday and even slept 3 hours in the middle of the day.  Burned a sick day today - my calendar was pretty clear at the office anyway.  Hopefully sleep a lot again today and consume lots of fluids.

She looks nice! If it looks like you are going to be stuck on a trainer for a while, you might want to invest in a cheap wheel and tire. The trainer will work on your tire. They make tires just for trainers. I think a cheap China tire would work just as well. Your bike shop might have an old wheel hanging around. It doesn't have to be perfect.

You guys keep your germs on your side of the internet Hope we can all get out side soon and get some clean air.

John - to post a picture just reply as normal, and then check the check box at the bottom of the reply box that says "Attach a file after posting". After you hit the submit button, you will then get a data box that will allow you to enter the file name and location of the picture you want to post.

Dale - Thanks for the tip on the tire! I'm hoping to be outside soon, but if you look closely at the pic I posted you can see the snow up above the window sill!

Terry - Hope your feeling better today!

Quick bike question: Do indoor miles on the trainer correspond equally to outdoor miles? Just curious if my trainer pace is anywhere near what my outside pace is going to be.

You can go faster and further on a trainer in the same amout of time than you do outdoors.  My sister can zing on her indoor cycling thing-a-ma-jig and knock out 30 miles in less than 1.5 hours as it has a distance calculator on it.  The best I can do in my neighborhood is about 15 miles in one hour.  I usually find a previous post of how far I rode outdoors and correlate that to my indoor trainer time, just to be fair.  Last night I did 30 minutes on the trainer.  30 minutes outdoors in my neighborhood is about 7.2 miles, so that is what I logged.

Rest-o-the-group - Tim and I signed up for the March bike challenge.  Look under the BT forums, then "Challenge Me!".  You set a goal for the month in time or miles (or klicks) and try to make your goal.  I was looking for a swim challenge, but no one started one.  If anyone wants to do a swim challenge in our mentor group for March, I need some help getting off of the couch in the mornings.

Terry

Once I get this 30K out of system next month, I will chime in on the bike challenge. Here is a good article on exercise, nutrition and your heart. I am planning on increasing my garlic intake and see if that helps as an anti-inflamatory.

I have different theories on how a trainer is comparable to outside. I can safely say that an hour doing a Charmical video I am trashed.
