I prowled over the website.  Thanks for the link!  I lived in Knoxville from about 70 - 78.  A lot of links to other East TN links.  I saw Panther Creek on there.  There is an Xterra race there, but I just can't fit that one in my schedule this year.

That Fall Creek Falls 10k trail run looks fun too!

On the road for two days Mon-Tues.  Knocked out a killer swim today and will use Mon as a rest day.  Broke 1000 yards into drill sets.  Was going to do a last 50 yd for a cooldown afterwards, rolled it into 75, then 100, 150 and just kept counting each 50 yard mark.  Hit a wicked "zone" and finally stopped at 800 yards.

Hey Terry, it doesn't look like you need a challenge, your kicking some serious butt!

I had a morning swim planned for tomorrow and thursday but it looks like work is going to get in the way again. I'm going to try to get it in on friday though.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Copied from yesterday's blog:

""I usually do my brick workouts in order of Run, Bike and then Swim. That is the most convenient when I am indoors but it is the exact opposite of the order of a race. Tonight I did my 3rd Bike and then Run brick. It was tough. I rode 20.1 miles in 65 minutes and then did a 5K in 26:45. My run posture was bad and tight. My butt and legs felt numb and weak. I didn't have fun.""

- Any advice? My elgs feel like stiff sticks.

FEB Totals:

Bike: 2h 47m - 50.05 Mi
Run: 4h 18m 51s - 30 Mi
Swim: 08m 45s - 400 M
Strength: 1h 20m
Tennis: 4h 00m

Yeah, Tim, that was one of the more enjoyable swims.  Now if I can just do that in the mornings!  That was a Sunday afternoon swim.

Good numbers for Feb, John!  Especially the run!  Are you warming up thoroughly before starting?  I came off a two-day business road trip yesterday and wanted to run.  Jumped rope for a quick 2 minutes, stretched for a few minutes and went into the cold to run.  Halfway thru mile 2, right hamstring went "TWANG!"  I had to do a lot of stretching and yoga afterwards to loosen it up.  Still sore today.

Everyone see all of the bike porn in this month's Triathlete mag?  Pant, pant, pant, drool, drool...

He John, sorry I can't offer up any advise on the bricks, I haven't attempted any yet. Good workouts in feb, especially coming off of being sick and the road rash on your feet!

Went down to pick up a copy of triathlete yesterday, but they were sold out. I guess I better just get a subscription.

I've been stuck on the road all week with some brutally long days. I'm a bit behind on my workouts for the week, but should be home tomorrow night and I hope to crank it up again.

Inside Triathlon has a 2 for 1 subscription going on. It's like $25 per year buy uou and a friend each get a copy so you could split it. That's about the same as buying 2 or 3 copies off the stands.

Hi John,
Everyone has problems getting off the bike and start running. In time your conditioning will improve and you will get used to it or at least you know what to expect. If you have some room left on your saddle rails, you can try to move it forward. If you do this, just do it a couple of mm at at time. Move, it, ride for a few days and move it again. Sometimes, being a bit forward more than what you get on a fit kit can help with the stiffness. Be sure to mark your saddle position before you move it just in case it doesn't work out. Just give it some time. Rather than do long rides and run, try several mini bricks i.e., ride 30 min, run 10, ride 35 run 15, etc. Hang in there everybody!

Tim!  Great job on the swim!  Dude!  It was 5:30 AM this morning and I could hear the rain in the 35 degree weather.  Uh, I thought, I can do this tomorrow.  We are getting snow rite now (tonight) and have about 2" on the ground.  I'm sure I can get a schwimmy-swim tomorrow afternoon or even Sunday if the roads are too bad.

March Snow

We had a rare 3" snow last night.  Some of it drifted to about 5" deep.  Got out and tooled around on the Rockhopper in the backyard.  Went to swim later and the pool was closed due to the weather.  Got a great weight workout in and then ran 3.5 in 32:38.  My kind of Saturday!

Hey Terry, looks like you made good use of the snow! Your pic brought to mind a question i've been meaning to ask. What do you do for cleanup/preventative maintenance after riding a bike in less than dry conditions? Any particular products you guys recommend or do you just wipe the bike down and call it good?

One more bike question while I'm at it. I see that people pay big bucks to shave grams of weight off their rides, but still have a bunch of ugly plastic reflectors attached. What are your opinions on keeping or removing the reflectors. I'm all for safety, but the ones on my bike seem to stick out like a sore thumb to me.

I don't ride on "salted" roads when it snows.  I wipe it down afterwards and relube the chain.  The Rockhopper is my secondary mtn bike, not my primary race bike.  I won't take the Epic out in the snow.

Got a good swim in today then an opportunity arose to knock out a quick 10 miles on the road later in the day.

I'd ditch the reflectors, if you feel comfortable.  Depends on how much riding you do at night.  I personally don't ride at night.  I don't road race, so I'm not a "weight wiennie" (yet).  Some mtn bikers are weight-wiennies though.  They'll go to carbon bottle cages, ultra-light (and ultra expensive!) rims, titanium seats, carbon seat posts, carbon handle bars, carbon brake levers, etc.

I don't want to ramble, but one thing more.  I was at the bike shop I race for about 8 months ago.  I wanted some high-end wheels (rims) for my mtn race bike.  I was asking the owner about some Mavic rims.  He had rims hanging all behind the counter, etc.  He said, "Terry, saving 8 ounces over the rims you have now, isn't going to make you faster.  Your fitness will make you faster.  Work on that and when your rims wear out, we'll look at rims."

WOW!  Dude could have sold me any set in that shop, but he said to work on my fitness.  He earned my respect that day (and on other days).  So I don't do the weight thing.  A carbon bottle cage(s) won't help me win a race.  One or two total pounds off my bike's weight won't win a race for me, but hill-climb repeats, wintertime base miles, etc. will.

My .02 worth.

Hey everyone!

Just checking in, its been a little quiet lately.

Did a swim/bike brick today. 1500yds followed by an hour spin class at the "y". I tried some Hammer Gel diluted in my water bottle for the bike portion. I like Hammer Gel straight up, but I didn't really care for the taste dissolved in water. I think I'll try some Hammer heed for the next long workout.

My knees were moaning a bit today, looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hammer products rock!

I just ordered Infinit last night.  You go to their website and mix your own for only about $40.  They advertise that folks run entire Ironman competitions on that product alone (wouldn't they all like to say that)!

Speaking of gels and the like, is there a place where you can order in bulk to get a better price?

I go through quite a bit of myoplex lite bars, but have only ever found them for sale individually.

I was in sunny southern california today, and took advantage of it. I got my first outside run in since before thanksgiving! Sure did feel good to be outside again. I hope spring gets here soon, there calling for another six inches of snow on friday!

Hope everyone is doing well....

I've bee pooped. My usual workout days the last 4 months have been 7pm - - 10pm Tues. & Thurs (for bike/swim/run) and Sunday 11am - - 1pm (for weights). However my Tennis team now has practice on Thursdays and I'm only getting 1 fitness day at the gym. I try to run around the 'hood or in my garage or pedal on the trainer but I NEED the gym. Today was the longest run I've done in a month (4.65 miles in 39 minutes) which is good BUT I have not swum/swam in March AND I only biked 2 (T W O) miles after my run. I was just too tired toget into it. I did lift and everything but I used to run 6 or 7 miles, bike 12 - 20 miles and STILL go down and swim 500 meters like clockwork. Ranting I guess. Plus the girl scout cookies, neighborhood parties, etc. have gotten me to 202 lbs (up from about 195 about 6 weeks ago). I know these problems are MY problems but I felt like sharing. I am going to beach 2nd week in April and there is a nice 14 mile bike route and a 4 mile run route (both flat at sea level about a football field from the beach) so hopefully i can get a workout in per day. blah blah blah

Hey John,

Hang in there man.  Life slaps us all upside the head on occasion and our training schedules get all caddywhompus.  I'm sure things will slow down for you.  I imagine at the beach you'll get some killer workouts in and that will get you back in the swing of things when you return.

Tim - check with the manufacturer of what you want to buy and ask if they have bulk discounts.  Or ask your favorite retailer if they offer quantity discounts.  I was at Vitamin Shoppe at lunch today and they have the No Explode (whatever the drink is) for $3.15 a bottle.  A little hit of that at 5:15 AM and it helps get me to the pool at "oh-dark-thirty."

Terry

Hey John, hang in there! I feel your pain, our girl scout cookies arrived last week and I seriously cannot lay off of them. Between the cookies and eating on the road I'm up three pounds this week!!!

Terry, thanks for the info. By the way, nice work at the pool!

It was road.   Wicked hills!  Like 5mph climbing and 36 mph down.  I'm too chicken to go any faster downhill.

Mountain bike practice tomorrow (Saturday).

Hope things are well in Iowa!
