Ooohhhh, very cool. I love white bikes. They look so much sleeker and speedy. Very hot.

Awesome on the ironman registration. I must say, even though our mentoring group has become small, I am training with some fierce people; 3 iron men and a half marathon runner. I guess I'll have to kick it into gear!

We rock!!!

Wow, I just got over some kind of crazy flu. I feel a little off of my training in the last week because of that, but I'm going to get back on it now that I'm feeling better. I've been training for quite a while for this sprint tri in May...I'm so ready for it to be here! I'm getting anxious, and I've also started this great marathon training program in town. So, I'm running more, which makes it harder to bike and swim. I know I just gotta keep it going until May 10.

Also, as May 10 gets closer, I'm starting to think of details...like what do I wear? How do I set up? I bought that tri suit, but realized I'm swimming in a pool, so I won't be wearing a wet suit over it. And I really can't wear it alone, since it has pockets. Anyway, any feedback on the details, would be appreciated!

Hey Lauren,

For the tri suit, I *think* you should be ok to use it in the pool solo. If you are referring to the back pockets (ala cycling jersey), they should be far enough down in the small of your back that they won't act like a parachute as you swim through the water.

If they do, and you still want to wear it, AND don't mind being a little "modified," toss a piece of duck tape over the pocket openings and then tear them off when you get out of the water.

Good luck on the sprint!

I agree, however I would HIGHLY recommend wearing it in the pool on training swim!!

That's a fast looking bike. What a fat, aero downtube and fast wheels. Congrats and I hope you put some long miles on it.
A little note, does that rear derailleur cable look a bit long?

Lauren,

Do you have a timing chip band already? That is something I would recommend purchasing ($5). If you don't have one the race organizers use either cable ties or those plastic hospital braclets to tie your timing chip on. Those can really rub and get pretty uncomfortable.

Got in the pool this weekend. First time since the surgery. ( Actually, I think it was the first time since January, but we won't talk about that ) My 100 yd time has dropped from 1:57 to 2:17, but I am hopeful I can make that up in the next two weeks. My first race of the season is in two weeks, on the 26th. It is a sprint of 300yds pool swim, 14 miles on the bike, and a 5K run. The bike route is flat but the run ends on a pretty big hill. This is my husbands first triathlon and also my neighbor's first race. It is funny that I am the "experienced" on of the group, having completed only one other tri, lots of 5K's and a half century charity bike ride. I am excited for everyone to do well and have fun. Because afterall, isn't that what it is all about?!

Long story But it's getting resolved shortly when I swap out the aeros with Vision bars. I still shake my head when I think of the otherwise professional mechanic that put the bike together, then told me that "it was the correct way to set the cabling".

I knew I was going to internally route through the new bars so I told him not to worry about it, that I was impatient to ride, and that in the future, please avoid giving me enough cable to hang myself on a long run

Tracy and Steve

I think you both hit the nail on its head!
It is all about having fun. Fun training. fun racing no matter what the time.
A good part of triathlon is to support other triathletes. We spend many hours training all by ourselves getting ready for a race. It is good to see other people surrounding us getting excited about the sport and sometimes also doing it themselves.

Tracy: great that your husband and neighbor are joining you and participating in this healthy past time. You are a great inspiration as you lead by example.

I am trying to get my 8 year old to try his first tri race and we are looking for a suitable event. Even my 5 year old daughter sometime says she want to enter, although that would be with floaters for the swim and training wheels for the bike (maybe with aero bars )
We were in a bike story this weekend and my wife was eyeing a pair of fast commuter wheels for her daily grocery trip. If she really wanted she could have one. One can not have too many bikes. All is well

Aerobars on my daughter's trike... now you got me thinking!

That's training plan is still coming along, work just got super busy and with the race last weekend (which went pretty well, all things considered -- you can read my race report on the Angels race down in Lynchburg) my motivation for anything not family related has been tough to muster.

However, the day of the "big race" is rapidly (ok, like 349 days) approaching, so it's time to get serious

How was everyone else's weekend?

Ben,

No pressure, just a gentle reminder. If you are interested in running the Army 10 miler there are only 6000 spots left. I know that sounds ridiculous, but registration started April 1st with 26,000 slots, and over 20,000 people have already registered and it is only 15 days later.

Let me know if you decide to run. We will try to hook up.

I picked up a Computrainer off Craigslist for a steal. It was a few years old, but I was able to upgrade the software and a few components to "freshen" it up a bit.

....

....

....

Holy crap. This thing is either going to make me a much stronger cyclist, or I am going to die in my office some evening, with my poor wife finding my lifeless body clipped into my bike, and the avatar on the screen getting farther and farther away from the computer chase rider.

Ben you are going to love the Compu Trainer... I think for FY08 I am 500 miles on the Computrainer, and 200 outside!!

I LOVE IT! The only thing to be aware of, is that is really puts a lot of wear and tear on your back tire... You may find yourself FLATTING EASIER OUT ON THE ROAD!! Again nothing major, just keep an eye on that bike tire!!!

Thanks for the tip Steve. I picked up a Conti Trainer tire (the yellow one), I just need to install it.

I am tempted to find a stable, but cheap, rear tire/cassette just to have set up for the trainer. Have you done something similar?

Sort of.... I actually went and picked up a different bike! It is just EASIER.... When I want to ride outside I just grab my bike off the rack instead of unhooking, or uninstalling anything...

At my house we have a "trainer" tire and cassette for all the reasons you have discussed. Works nicely.

I have my first race of the season this saturday. Getting nervous. Wish I had another 2 weeks to train, but oh well. Did everyone have a productive weekend? I think I swallowed every bug in North Carolina this week on my bike. Spring has beautiful flowers, but nasty road kill and bug protein. Something buzzing got lodged in my helmet, that was scary.

It was a good weekend. I ended up running two 5ks, with the first one (Sat - CRC Benefit 5k, Sterling VA) coming in at a PHS (post high-school) PB of 23:28. I am still waiting to see the official time, but that's what the Garmin reports.

Sunday's 5k was slower, but still in at ~24:50.

I feel like I'm the most novice on this message board...but I'm doing my best! I did my first brick, run/bike, workout today...my legs felt like they had weights on them during my run! Well, 20 days (I think) until my triathlon.

I'm back into PortlandFit, too...the marathon training program. So, I ran 6 miles Saturday, and then up to 7 this Saturday. Its making it hard to work in the biking and swimming, but I know I have to do it!

Don't think that at all Lauren Just being here puts you above the "novice" category.

Bricks are great training. It's also worth doing swim/run bricks just to see how it affects your upper body (it's not exactly like a tri, because you have the bike to rest the upper body) but I definitely have a harder run workout when I swim first (if even from a calorie burn/energy spent standpoint).

Do you happen to have a digital version of that PortlandFit training plan? I would love to see what they have you doing, and hopefully incorporate part of the it into the end of my HIM training plan. Thanks!

hey, dumb question. How do I post a photo on this thing? The cut and paste option doesn't seem to be working,

By the way, the coolest thing just happened. Someone I don't know from the BT website sent me a private message saying she was also running my race on Saturday and asked for my bib number so she could take pictures of me and send them to me. Isn't that the coolest thing?

Lauren, I view you as very experienced and the person I seek running advise from. We all just have our personal strengths that all. Keep going. I have never run more than 6 miles, so you are way ahead of me.
