Well I finished the race this weekend for my first this year. It was well and experience no the least. I did PR by about 4 minutes but considering the elements I will take it. We ran mostly during several thunderstorms. So now I have a fever today and feel like crap but I did finish..Oh and I am in the middle of drying out all my stuff and washing as we speak.

Hey there,

So I am thinking about signing up for my first triathlon that I just stumbled upon this morning but I have a few questions (I'm nervous about it!!!)... it's a super sprint tri (250 yard swim, 12 mile bike, 5K run) which I think would be a great distance for a first timer.  The only thing about it is that it takes place on May 31 --> do you think that I have enough time to train for it?  I am running in a half mary on April 5th and then I have a training plan set for an off road duathlon that I am participating in on June 21st - I can easily manipulate my training plan but I would like some input from the experts

The swim takes place indoors - can somebody tell me about how the transition would work?  What should I wear (swimsuit indoors, tri shorts on top once I get to the bike???)... is it ok to ride a mtn bike (I haven't purchased a road bike yet)???  Help!

Oh yeah well I use lots of water as well. Aaron what is your take on solid foods during a IM? I tried combos on some of my training rides and they were ok but that day I could not stomach them. Also love uncrustables

Just so you don't forget: Gatorade, Infinit, Gu2O and the like are not hydration.  They may be liquid but they're food, not hydration.  Your body processes a liquid with carbs just like solid food.  If that's all you use on a long distance race, it's a perfect formula for GI issues and bloating.

I use Hammer Gel, whatever sports drink is on the course and water.

Do you use hammer gel exclusively on the IM course? I use hammer gels and sustained energy for long days, but Im not too fond of having to carry it over the whole IM course. Ive considered gels the whole way, but might get sick of them! Since I mainly only like the apple cinnamon. Ive also considered Sustained Energy on the bike, then gel and whatever they have on the course, but I know *hammer* doesnt really agree with switching back and forth to gatorade (or whatever simple sugar drink they have on the course) while using the hammer stuff. Guess I could just try

Way to tough it out yesterday Aaron, you have a great attitude.

I had my very first race yesterday & did well. I need to work on my swimming badly & want to gain a couple more MPH on the bike. I hope everyone has a great week.

Congrats Schrup.. how did you like your first race?

Congrats to you also Aaron. I followed the IMAZ thread on Sunday. Sounds like it was a very tough day for many many people. Finishing it out by just having fun is a great example for all of us IM virgins scared of things going wrong! I cant wait to see what your coach has you doing next!

Aaron, FYI that isn't quite the case. As long as the solution is isotonic it will pass into your system. INFINIT is a hydration prduct. Yes it contains the calories and electrolyte you need, but not in a form that will lead to digestive problems. I have 24 hour races on 100% liquids (INFINIT) with zero digestive issues.

Far be it from me to defend gatorade but the Endurance formula is not bad stuff and is a hydration product. The regular gatorade is for drinking while cutting your lawn NOT for endurance atheletes. No idea about Gu2O. There are a number of drinks that have calories and electrolyte that work just fine for hydration.

The single biggest factor when determining what hydration product to use for training and race day, is make sure that it has a BLEND of different types of carbs. By using a drink with maltodextrin, sucrose, dextrose and in some cases fructose you will increase the number of calories that your body can absorb by 30%. This is a HUGE number over a 5-15 hour effort. You are pretty much capped at about 220-240 calories per hour that you can absorb thru a singular carb product. By adding a sucrose and/or dextrose (glucose) those numbers climb over 300 calories per hour.
