Corey07 - 2012-05-11 6:34 PMI'd love to go. Unfortunately, I'm in Belcourt, North Dakota until next Thursday/Friday. Have fun and post up how the course is!
Belcourt, ND should I make plans for a family vacation there Corey?
Oh helltotheno, unless you like wide open spaces. I mean Wide Open Spaces! And casinos, lots of casinos, which is what I'm working on. I did finally find enough paved roads to put a decent bike ride together. On a plus side, I'm like 10 miles from Canada, so my goal tomorrow is to find a road that goes right up to the border. I didn't bring a passport though so I can't do a multinational ride which would be kind of fun.

I am hitting the KC TRI bike course with some other guys @ 0600 tomorrow. Also doing a run to check out the condition of the gravel path. Will give you a good scouting report via FB.

The bike course has more vertical climb than before but does seem faster and the gravel path portion of the run was in good shape.

Does anyone know if there will be assigned transition spots?  Or will it be a first come, first served setup this weekend?

A friend of mine said he talked to the RD and that it is first come first served.  We are planning on getting there about the time the transition opens.

Thanks.  There is an optional bike dropoff Saturday.  Does that get you a reserved spot, or do they just hold your bike for you until you arrive Sunday morning?

Problem with that is there is an optional bike check in Saturday. All of the good spots will be taken on Saturday afternoon.

A message from Ryan Robinson (RD) in the KC TRI Face Book page says transition spots are all assigned. They were assigned the three previous years also.

He may have been wrong.  Like I said, he told me he talked to the RD, which doesn't mean he really did.

I'd rather they be assigned.

Via facebook I asked "are there assigned spots in the racks for bikes? If not, will there be security onsight ALL NIGHT for those that leave their bikes in transition at Saturday's bike check-in?"

Via facebook, the RD responded "Yes there assigned spots. Yes there will be security ALL NIGHT. I would check the weather forecast before you decide to leave it though."

This may or may not be accurate, as there is plenty of conflicting information about this and other issues.  I would welcome clarification.  I would welcome any communication, really.

Yeah, I just looked at the FB page and saw your exact question above and the answer. Who knows.  My friend may have been wrong too.  I guess we will find out soon.

I also asked Ryan a clarifying question on facebook to see if the "assigned" spots are a specific, singular numbered spot, or a assigned range of spots on a rack by age group.  If specific and singular so that nobody can take it, then I won't check my bike on Saturday.  If assigned a "range" of spots, then it will still be a bit first come first served and I might check the bike Saturday.

funny.  as I read this thread, I went from planning on arriving at 4am to bringing the bike in on saturday to showing up at the last minute on sunday (I'm doing the sprint).

We should be able to find out the answers at packet pickup.  not crazy about leaving my bike overnight even if there is security.

Friend of mine with a garmin on said if you swam just outside all the bouy markers it was 430 yards for 1 lap.

Here is one response I received, but not from Ryan:

"Ken Welsh By rack in the past so you can assume the same this year."

With that, I may still just bring my bike Sunday morning and hope for the best.

M first chance to ride the course was last night.  Although disappointed when the changes were made, I think the changes are in the best interest of all athletes. The course is a bit faster, even with the climb on the south end of the lake.  The run course may be a different story...

Whether not looking good for Sun. Do you guys know the best place for spectators for the race? Also the hill that everyone is talking about on the south side isn't zoo bad its more of a long slow climbing hill and not the short bloop hill. If it were me I would rather have the long hill vs. the short bloop hill.

Good spectator locations:

Have them hangout near transition. They can watch you exit the swim, then walk over to Raytown road for you bike laps, then back to the race area for the run. For the run the 1st right turn or near after transition for the 1st and 2nd laps, then head over to the finish line. This is a very good spectator race! My wife and kids love it!

Be happy we don't race Saturday with the forcasted 20mph winds + gusts out of the south. The winds Sunday are only going to be 8 mph out of the S.W.

Anyone else get that simplistic email from the KC Tri?

Most race day questions are answered on the site?  Where?  They don't answer most of the questions I've seen on this forum.  Maybe I'm looking at the wrong page?

It it just me or would you expect a little more fanfare and creativity with the emails?  Just plain text, no active links, and 4 sentences.

I wonder if this is foreshadowing of things to come Sunday?

I'm I being too critical?  Just watching these forum posts, each questions gets 3 answers, one from someone that "talked" to the RD, someone that saw his post on FB and someone that read the read the web site.  No answers seem to be the same.

I'm kind of nervous that this experience may not be everything i was hoping for.

Ryan Robinson (RD) usually delivers on race day.  I would expect a very positive experience this weekend.  With so many people signed up, I'm quite sure he's busier than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs right now making sure Sunday will go smoothly.

I got fairly detailed emails on May 4 and May 15, before the simple email you referenced that came today.

What questions aren't being answered on the site?
NM, just read the thread - I've been out of town.

Yeah, it would be nice if they offered a little "athlete guide" with the specifics ya'll are asking about. Their FAQ is pointless to me...

The racking situation seems to be in the air.  Assigned by number to the spot?  Array of numbers to a rack?

Everyone seems to be worried about the run with 1400 racers.  I wonder if they are accounting for that or just hoping it works out?

Granted I didn't scour the website, but it's so slow when I try to access it, I lost focus.

Did anyone see a elevation profile of the bike course?

It would be nice to see wave start times.  Maybe they will have those at packet pickup?

Just seems they could do so much more with the website and emails.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure RR is up to his eyeballs, but if he needs more help, they should hire it and keep people a little better informed.  All these forum questions should go on the site with official answers.  Just my 2 cents.

I'd check out the FB page, but it's blocked at my work, so that's not an option for me.
