The best you can do is be prepared for the worst.

Yes, my full intentions are to be prepared for the worst.  I guess my question now is, what is the worst?

I guess my question now is, what is the worst?

Last year, for those of us later on the last loop, we had winds gusting to 40. By far the worst wind I've ever felt in my entire life on a bike. On practice rides with little wind I had no problem coasting down the Beeline at 22mph without pedaling. I was pedaling as hard as I could and with the headwind going downhill I was going 8mph. That was the worst.

Yeah, you might be able to double your power-to-weight ratio if you shaved that thing....

Any Arizona locals have an idea of how strong potential winds might be?  I know this is a very vague question, but I was just hoping for some ideas.  Did a little searching on the internet for average wind speed for specific locations, but I'm coming up with nothing...

There is always wind on the beeline* even if there is no wind in town. It is most often a headwind on the way out and a tail on the way back to town. Sometimes a crosswind.

But you never know as we had to fight the wind on the way back to town last year. Wrecked my legs for the run.

(* disclaimer: there are times that there is no wind on the beeline but that is late at night and if you are riding at that time you have missed the cutoff and just don't want to get off your bike)

Hmm, so you're saying the best way to prepare is to find the nearest hurricane and ride straight for it!

Thanks for the input everybody.  You can't change the weather, but you can be ready for it!  Happy training to all.

Yup, nice 90/2 brick last weekend followed by a 2 hour run yesterday. Going into a recovery week, after which I expect some big volume.....  We've had some fairly windy conditions in the last couple weeks, it's made for some good long training rides, and we try to draft as little as possible. No sense drafting into the wind now when you can't on 4/13.  Might as well get used to it.

As for the wind, I am taking a page from bryancd's playbook.  I'm just going to make the wind someone else's problem

Hi, all! This is my first IM. I'm traveling from upstate NY, and have been limited to running in sub-freezing temps and spinning on the trainer. I may have to crank the heat in my house to prepare for temps well above 50 degrees!

^My first IM as well - I have had one long-ish outside ride to date..(mostly due to rain/poor Saturday weather conditions and a full time job during daylight hours!)... Here's to a Great first....and to the 8 weeks leading up to the race!!!!

Mostly excited. Can't wait to experience the race with friends and family. And of course, being blown away by all the energy coming down the finisher's chute.

This'll be my second go on this course..

The night before the first time was absolutely the worst: None of my usual pre-race routines could calm me down so I went into the race on about 3-4 hours sleep. Don't expect to be quite so high strung this time but I am bringing ear plugs and a sleep mask just the same.

First timer here, and it still hasn't hit me yet that I'll be doing an Ironman.  I'm thinking it's better that way, because I sure am trying to stay away from "freak out" mode.  Probably won't hit me until I get on the airplane.

I wasn't nervous until just now! Similar to your story, I don't expect to obtain much sleep the night before.

This is my second Ironman (first IMAZ) and I am more concerned now because I know what is coming.  I can't tell if that's good or bad at this point.

Is it a common feeling to enter the race feeling as if you haven't trained enough?  The next 4 weeks are going to be very high volume for me, but it just seems like I should've done more up to this point.  Anybody else feel that way?

JC, I feel the same way. I've really maxed out my week right near 10 hours of training a week; in terms of getting the most amount of training in possible given my responsibilities. I keep feeling under-prepared. I'm just hoping, as you said, that the next 4 weeks will make the biggest difference. I'm not sure what your goal or goal time is. I'm just hoping to go slow and steady, and finish with a smile.
