Veteran 928 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand My swim coach is coaching me to breath on alternate sides. I can do it, but it is very obvious that one side is much more comfortable than the other. After practice the other day she challenged me to start using my left hand for things that I do daily with my right hand. Have you ever tried the following with the opposite hand? * Brushing Teeth * Shaving * Applying Shave Cream * Eating (using utensils) * Write your name 5 times * Use a Mouse I was amazed on how awkward it feels. The ironic thing is I do all of these with my right hand except apply shave cream. I usually use my left hand. I tried my right and it was really strange. |

Master 2115 Dothan, Al | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I eat with my left hand, I write with my right hand, and I can not switch either. I am right hand dominate, as eating is the oly thing I do with my left. I don't think I will try shaving with my left...sounds dangerous. |

Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand unfortunately, i broke my dominant wrist (right) snowboarding this february. after surgery and 5 weeks in a cast I know all to well what that feels like. now, i have always swam using bilateral breathing, but the first time i tried brushing my teeth left handed I almost gauged my eye out (it slipped). |

Regular 206 | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I'm a lefty and can do all those things righty except write. I actually switch hands while brushing my teeth or shaving depending on what side I'm doing. Using a mouse with either hand is easy for me because I work in IT. I'm at so many other people's desk during the day I don't even need to think about it. I find that most left handed people are pretty adept at doing things with their right hand. I think it's because so many things are right handed you have to use your right hand for them. |

Not sure why or even when it started but aside from using chopsticks, I always use my left hand when eating |

I switch off on brushing teeth & shaving, apply shave cream with my right hand. Usually eat with my left hand, and probably couldn't write halfway legibly with my right hand to save my life. I mouse with my right hand, but touchpad with my left. I also golf right-handed, except for putting lefty. Oh, and when swimming I usually breathe to the right. I can breathe bilaterally, but find I don't get enough air. Edited by tjh 2008-07-27 12:51 AM |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I'm very left-handed -- there is absolutely nothing I do right-handed (or even right-footed). Oh, except I did teach myself to use a mouse right-handed to avoid RSI issues at work. I think it's fascinating that there doesn't seem to be a good relationship between what side you breathe on and your dominant hand. I'm left handed and feel more comfortable left-side breathing, so I always assumed lefties breathed to the left. But then my dad, who's right-handed, said he breathed to the left, so we decided to look online and see which of us was the freak. From what I can tell, neither of us are. It does make me wonder why most people are more comfortable with one side over the other. |

Expert 1379 Woodland, California | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I'm right handed and I was a left side breather until I forced myself to learn bilateral breathing. I can't write or brush my teeth with my left hand. But utensils........when I am cutting meat, I keep my fork in my right hand and use my left hand to cut. I've been told that's weird. |

Mountain View, CA | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I eat with my left hand from time to time, especially if I'm doing something with my right hand. I shave using both hands, too. My parents tell me that when I was learning to write, I couldn't figure out which hand to write with because neither felt easier than the other. I suppose that's why switching hands for some things isn't too hard for me, but I still have trouble with certain things. After I had shoulder surgery years ago I had to learn to serve (volleyball) with my left hand, and that was awkward... I did it, but it felt weird. I have trouble breathing on my left side when I swim, but I think that's just because for years I've done it almost exclusively on my right--I seem to remember being able to do it fine when I was in middle school. |

The only thing I can do with my left hand is pick my nose and scratch my butt. Begs the question: in which order do you prefer? Being an extreme rightie I actually had to check - nope, even picking my nose is more comfortable with my right hand. Scratching with my left I can manage just fine. I can, however, pull a Leonardo daVinci: since I was a kid I've had no trouble writing backwards and in mirror images. I can write just as fast either way, but my penmanship is actually better when written in mirror image.

Master 1572 PA | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand I'm going to try it, just for fun, for a week. I'm good on my breathing, but I'm still going to do this just for kicks. The pouring thing cracks me up. And dexter, thanks for the visual. So this post marks the kick off of my left handed week. Unclipping the opposite side on the bike and putting that foot down is going to be a fun one. How many times will I bite it? Here's to a week full of amusing myself!

Sweet. Another one that's very hard to break - when you're standing around most times people put most of their weight on one leg. Try to shift to the opposite leg for a change [also a goofy maneuver for the first two hundred times]. Or if you run with a water bottle - switch hands. I run better when I carry it in the "wrong" hand [can't remember which one that is right now because my run mileage is so low...] |

I've actually been doing this experiment for a number of years now and with training (like most things) I have gotten better with my left hand although it still feels weird and there are some things which I just cannot do - like use chopsticks with my left. |

14 | Subject: RE: Interesting Experiment - Right Hand v Left Hand Left side: write, eat , most things Right side : kick footeball , play basketball , use a mouse Think the left/right thing is genetic , my brother is also left handed and my mother started out writting with her left hand but in school kids werent allowed to write with there left hand so they used to tie her left hand behind her back till she got used to wiritng her right hand ( Crazy !), so now she writes with her right hand and does everthing else with her left hand

I can do pretty much anything with either hand except write. I find that I do everything requiring strength with my right hand and everything requiring fine motor skill and finesse with my left. Even though I'm left handed, my right arm is stronger. One note on doing everything with either had. In every day life, yes. In sports, no. Even though I'm a lefty, I play sports right handed. I look like a right handed person throwing lefty when I through lefty. |
