Who's in? It's my first time doing this race but I'm looking forward to a flat and fast course.

My wife and I are signed up. Her brother, who lives in Orlando wanted to do a race kind of 1/2 way between them and Atlanta, so we decided on this one. Never done this race before, but it looks like a great venue.

Doug and I did the race the last two years.  We saw no snakes but did see a lot of antpiles at the start area, so watch out for those.  Very flat and fast.  A good race.

x2 on the snake.  It was looking for cover in a crowd of swimmers.  Some guy picked it up and moved it before the start.

see you there

This is a great race - I've done it the last 3 years, I think. Very fast, flat, and lots of fun! I won't tell you about the large reptile they pulled out of that lake last year.

I'm actually doing the duathlon this year, but I'll be there!

I choose to believe that snakes in the water won't bite you because they will drown if they do. There are only 4 posionous snakes in the US/Ga. Of course two of those do tend to favor water--copperhead and cottonmouth and both are found in south Ga.

Is this race an overnight stay or is it morning drivable from ATL.

We are driving down in the morning, but that is because we have no place to drop the girls off.  I think it is about 3 hours from Roswell.

Four? What are the other two? I thought there were only two, and not localized to south GA.

I do not know which two you are talking about.  I am not an expert and anyone is welcome to disagree with me but I think that all of these except the Coral snake can be found here although they may not be that common here.  All but the Coral snake are in the same family and can be found around Atlanta.

1)  Coral Snake do not live around here. They are in South GA though.
2)  Pygmy Rattlesnake
3) Canebreak/Timber Rattlesnake
4) Diamondback Rattlesnake
5) Copperhead can be found here
6) Cottonmouth (venomous watersnake)

Since I didn't know about the snakes in Georgia (I thought there were only 2, too) I looked it up. If anyone is interested, I found some info here. Seems Neal is an expert.

I'm just gonna keep pretending there aren't any snakes in Lake Blackshear!

Cotton mouth, coral, copper head and rattle snake. I have had encounters with all but the coral snake in Ga. Coral snakes are very timid and rare and often mistake for --I think--King snakes. Bands are different. I just avoid both since I don't remember the distinction.

I have never seen a rattle snake in metro area but I did almost step on one hiking in North Georgia. I see copper heads frequently out at the Big Creek Grn way. Once when I was running and the kids were riding my son toldme "Mommy I just ran over an orange snake." Upon further discussion I figured it must have been a copper head and then we had to have the discussion about avoiding snakes.

Cotton mouths I've seen less frequently. But I have seen them here and in south GA.

For some reason I'm contemplating being an idiot and doing this last minute.. I've been nursing a hurt ankle (achiles tendonitis) and the DR has me off it through the weekend but I can do the distance even after being off it for a little while.  Thinking about just doing it for fun with a run/walk combo on the run part as not to stress my ankle. Just treat it like a practice for my previously planned first sprint in october. Just thinking if I have done one before and dealt with the nerves and transitions etc it may make what was supposed to be my first easier and less stressful.

Stupid?

Really the practice part is stretching it as I am just sort of impatient and really really want to do one, but I"d try my hardest to take it easy, well easy after the swim I am only fooling myself if I try and say i wouldn't push that.

That was actually why I asked the question.  I was wondering if you were grouping the three species of rattlesnakes into one group "rattlesnake".  The copperhead also belongs in that group.  They are all in the same family "viperidae".

The coral snake is sometimes mistaken for a Scarlet Kingsnake or a Milk snake.  Their is a saying to tell which is poisonous.  "Black on yellow kill a fellow..."  I do not know the rest.

Cornsnakes which we also have around here are very orange, but they are not poisonous.

If anyone was wavering about this race and didn't do online registration... I saw on the GA Multisports website that they're having onsite registration on Friday at Lake Blackshear Resort from 2-6 and Saturday morning from 6-7:30.

I'm in, although I have to wait to register until I get down there. For the record, I've done this race (or volunteered because of a random injury last year) since 2005, and I've never seen a snake. But I have stepped in a lot of ant piles. And almost in the duck poop. I'd be more worried about picking something up from that.
