Subject: Anyone doing Nathans?
Hi everyone, back from a summer of craziness and vacations and back to business. I looked all over but couldn't find any threads for Nathans? I know there were mixed reviews about it last year but today is the last day to signup online before the price goes up and I am 'this close' to doing it, wanted to see what everyone thought of the race...
This will be my first tri and the only thing I am really freaking out about is swimming in TTL - ick!
Will there be any Splash n Dash's before the event?
Thanks for any information, I just thought I would get some good opinions before finally making the plunge. I appreciate it!

I'm signed up to race the Oly. Didn't do this race last year so don't have any pre-existing opinions on how it was ran. I say take the plunge!

There is a splash and dash (#1) on the 24th, three days before Nathans.  It's a 1000m swim, 3k run.  Good luck on your first tri!  My first one was Tempe International and I was definitely anxious/nervous about the swim as well...it's not bad though! Butcher Jones Cove is a great to practice your OWS.  I'm new on BT but I know there are several groups who go there often.

According to RaceLink, there are 17 of us BT'ers doing Nathans, either the Sprint or the Oly. I did the sprint last year. I enjoyed the race and am signed up to do the Oly this year.  My main reason to do it is because the course is exactly the same as Tempe Intl Olympic, and I want to compare times to that race in May since I melted down in the heat at Tempe Intl...

There are a lot of us training for Nathan's and SOMA (and IMAZ!), so just keep checking the forums for when and where we're training!

Thanks guys! I went ahead and signed up...now am excited, scared, nervous etc...
I would love to hear where everyone is training! Schedule is a bit crazed during the week with DH work schedule, two small kids at home and my spin classes (4x/week) but luckily as of Sept I can get some longer workouts done on the weekends!
Does everyone train for OWS at the Canyon lake - or are there any groups that actually swim in TTL? I really want to get a few in before the event!
Looking forward to meeting some of you! Been training for this for so long and am now finally putting my work into action! yay!

Many of us still swim at Lake Pleasant or at Butcher Jones Cove at Sugauro Lake.  I know some tri clubs swim at Canyon, but have never been so do not know of a point of contact for that one.

I swim with AZ Tri Club out at Canyon Lake..

OWS @ Canyon is normally on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Swims are at the boulder recreation area, on the right just before the 2nd bridge. Nice no boats allowed area with no weeds, etc.

There is free parking on the left side of the road just before that. If you park in the Boulder recreation area you will have to have a Tonto pass.

Go here to get on the training mailing list.

I would like too.  If anyone wants to do a relay (the run portion) I would be willing to the swim/bike...

oh, relay is for the olympic distances

God I hate running....

Skipping RedRock events this year because I asked about a Clydes division in their races not being available this year and I was told that they take up more medals and time so divisions are no longer available for Nathans and SOMA.

From the First Wave Tri website:

From Kimo Seymour: Just to let you clubs and coaches know, we extended the price increase deadline for Nathan Tempe Triathlon 2 days, to the 19th at midnight. We did this for the clubs and coaches only. The price goes up $15 tomorrow night.

As of today, Nathan Tempe Tri registration is 35% ahead of last year at this same time, with over 900 athletes registered. Nathan will likely be the largest Olympic/Sprint event in Arizona this year, and it looks as though the event will sell out shortly.

Doing the OLY, already signed up. It will be my second year doing it. I got a notice on FB from Redrock that they are making a change to the bike course that includes more riding on Rio. I assume that they'll probably add 100 more 90 degree turns too

I'm thinking of signing up for the sprint. The intersection at Mill/Rio looks like it could get a bit hairy, one group turning W on rio, one group coming back and turning N on mill, and one group heading straight through. anyone blows a turn and it could get ugly.

Isn't the course map on the event site the exact same course as Tempe Intl?  I'm doing the sprint!  Sounds like this race hasn't been wetsuit legal in the past.  Is that correct?

Nathan's wasn't wetsuit legal last year, was the year before.

In other words, it's a crap shoot.

It looks exactly like the same course for Tempe Intl - didn't you do that one?  As I remember, the intersection is plenty big enough for all of the bike traffic. Of course, by the time I got out of the swim at Tempe Intl, there weren't that many bikes left on the course.

One of the advantages of being a hyrdosloth is that it's always easy to find your bike after the swim.

I speak as one of your hydrosloth siblings.

Roger that! Of course it was a little humiliating at Vineman when they were dismantling all of the bike racks around mine by the time I got out of the water!

I'll be doing it this year (third time). Kind of a bummer the bike course is 26.5 miles instead of a standard 40k as I've only raced Olympic distance a hand full of times and want to compare times. I guess I can compare paces haha.

PS - First post! My name is Josh and I live in Flagstaff!
