Subject: Offseason Challenges
Today I was thinking about different ways to motivate myself in the offseason.  Many of us take this time to relax and recovery.  Others work on their limiters (cough, running).  After years of doing both of these, I am finding myself a bit bored with the normal s/b/r routine.

I want to toss out the idea of a Georgia Forum Offseason Challenge.  The concept would be to establish different tiers of challenges within each discipline.   Some of these goals are easier than others to achieve.  The challenges can be very specific (in regards to location at time) or a bit more vague (all about improvements).  The goal is less about egoistic intentions for fast people to post fast times.  Instead, the challenge is individual, go for the challenges that you want to accomplish.  Participate when and if you want.  No pressure, no obligation.

For instance, I wondered today if it is possible to ride the front three gaps in less than 2 hours.  Obviously this would be an extremely difficult bike challenge.  But think of how much fun it would be if a large group of us went up there and tried to do a 35 mile time trial where we all pushed each other.

Other challenges could be run 1 mile on a track for time.  Improve 5k time by 1 minutes.  Swim 1000y in XX.  Ride from Floyd Rd to Tara Drummond and back averaging 17 mph.  The possibilities are endless.

The challenge will force you to be honest with yourself and hopefully be a carrot in front of you for the offseason.  Plus it could provide a place for you to conduct multiply attempts at the same goal and see if you truly are improving (think swim time trials).  And at the very least, it promotes good sportsmanship and encouragement among us

Is there any interest in something like this?  I am more than happy to head this up.  If there is enough interest, I will start a new thread to solicit feedback in regards to defining all the challenges.

Id take the bait. and i'd even throw it out there that the challenge doesnt have to be internal. it could come from one of us. for example, i could throw the gauntlet down to you if i knew your training and you could elect to take it on.

Was that Floyd Rd. to Tara Drummond idea directed at me?   I do need a bike challenge.  I've have a little too much time of not being held accountable.  I like this idea.  Let's see what we can do.

I like the idea.  I may not be able to take on all the challenges, but I would like to have a few "events" to work on.

This would be an interesting way to challenge..."Battle Camp"    I would be willing to help setup a swim challenge, but not quit at this level.

I like it.

I think it would be best to come up with as many challenges for folks of different fitness levels.   Here are some ideas of the top of my head:

  1. Run X miles per week
  2. Complete a marathon
  3. Ride a century at X mph
  4. Improve one mile TT on track by X%
  5. Track repeats once a week- we all seem to skip this workout.  lol
  6. Yards per month swimming.
  7. 1000 yard swim TT improvement.

I like the gaps challenge too.  Maybe the fasties think under 2 hours while others say 2:30.

5K improvement is another great idea.  There are tons of 5K's and we could have folks run one now and then another in the spring.

I might be interested, at least in the bike part of s/b/r workouts. It would be great to have this local challenge.

Depending on how we want to structure it, we could have a bronze, silver and gold status for each of the goals like the Gaps.  Times might be 2:00, 2:30, 3:00 so that everyone can participate.  I want it to be inclusive, not just for the fasties.

And time improvements for specific distances will be the crux of the program.  That way hopefully everyone sees personal improvement without being too concerned with not winning or being the fastest.

Being new to the area and never ridden the gaps... but I'm still up for a challenge.  And since I am focusing on cycling right now it would fit right in.

Don't just ride the gaps, run them. One of the biggest challenges in the area is the Hogpen Hill Climb. 10.5 miles almost entirely uphill, where at least 6 miles are steep. If you've ridden hogpen, you know.

I would like to try the GAPS at some point.  I am going to be up there this weekend but I don't think anyone else is riding up there now.  If you all go at some point let me know.  I don't think I would set any speed records but I would like to add it to my list of things I have done...

I'll play - always up for a challenge.

One that I would like to conquer is the Gaps - again.  I have not been up there in a good year at least I think and I'm scared to go!  I used to love it up there when I was a roadie - now that I'm a triathlete my focus has been so single minded.  Need to change things up a little for the winter and focus on some things that will make me stronger and not just faster on my tri bike.

In.

Even though I am not distracted by Ole Miss losing every single football game of any interest football I need all of the off-season motivation I can get.  That said, when shaping the challenge, my 2 psi worth is that during this off-season the focus for me is more on volume and consistency in my limiter (running) than speed or time.

There is also the Brasstown Bald 5k in December ... it is just 3.1 mi and only one hill over the entire race course .  The race is on December 20th this year, starting at 11:00 am.  While I could not find an event specific race site, it is put on by Georgia Runner and registration can be found here.

I'm down for a challenge of some sort.

My winter plans:

1. Not get fat
2. Keep some semblance of s/b/r shape
3. Not get fat

Ok, I may not be in the area right now but...  here's an idea.

Instead of the "winner" being the person who went fastest, the "winner" of one of the challenges is the person with the most improvement.

For instance, the 5K challenge.  Whoever has the most improvement in speed wins the challenge.

(looks like I'll be back in the greater Atlanta area after January, so I'll be keeping an eye on this forum to see what y'all are up to!)

Yes! I would like to have some fun challenges through the winter, gearing up for IMCdA training starting in January.

I am going to sit down this weekend and try to develop a challenge format...some will be based on time, some based on improvement and maybe some based on consistency/distance.  Again, the key isn't to establish winners or losers.  Instead, I hope to put out some different challenges that mixes up training, makes you think and work outside your comfort zone and attempt to accomplish new and challenging things.

I will probably create some type of ranking scale, not for keeping score, but instead to allow us to mark off one accomplishment and set our sights on something even higher.  For instance, a challenge might be:

Running:  Improve your 5k time
Gold Star:  Improve by 3 minutes
Silver Star: Improve by 2 minutes
Bronze Star: Improve by 1 minute

Will you keep a real posterboard chart with all our names and challenges, and then give us real gold star stickers?  Really seeing it helps motivate me.

I might even get in on this if there are gold stickers involved.

I'm in.  Hopefully I'll be in this area for awhile...I will at least until mid-January.  I'm scared to ride in ATL, but I am going to conquer it.  I have not been in training for awhile, so I definitely could use the challenges and encouragement.
