TriRSquared - 2010-03-12 2:14 PM While it looks like it's a long way away this is a nice hotel:

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/tpapg-courtyard-st-petersburg-clearwater/

2 years ago we stayed there and there were quite a few St A's participants there (including pro Julie Dibens).  It's quite an easy drive down I-275 to downtown.  I'd say that early in the morning only 20 mins MAX.

Yes,, that's the aerea I was trying to point him towards,  I believe its called Carillon.
Thx TriR2

I stay in this area all the time on Business off Ulmerton.  You are looking at 11 -12 miles to drive to the start.  You can be on I275 is a couple of minutes.  If you are looking for an even cheaper alternative and a hotel that has been recently updated try the Holiday Inn Select on Ulmerton.  I get a $75 dollar per night rate and it was remodeled last year.

Socks - 2010-03-19 2:21 PM   water temps do not require it but in general most people are faster in a wetsuit.  Its been chilly here this spring so I bet the water will be colder than other years

based on current gulf and bay water temps, it's almost a sure bet w/suits will be allowed this yr.
Allowed, not mandatory.  I am assuming the water would feel fine for a lot of Northeners...  a lot of people don't wear them.

On this date last year, the water temp. at the Coast Guard station (just south of the swim course) was 77°. Today it is 69°. It's worth noting that the CG thermometer seems to read a couple of degrees warmer than other sources.

I've never swam in a wet suit and dont do well in cold water - what style do most people wear??  Looks like I need to find one before the event and practice getting out of it during transition.  It seems like a sleeveless full suit would work well - any suggestions for a first timer??   Also, any pointers for T1?

Mojo - I have a sleeveless but I bought it considering I would get more use out of something not so warm.
there's a few places that rent them, start with the race sponsors, but I also believe Chainwheel Drive in CLW, as well as the Ironmanstore (www.ironman360.com) may rent them.  There will be last minute demand for these suckers so I suggest you get going.

BTW: I don't do well in cold water either, but especially in murky lake water.  All my races are ocean swim.  G'luck!

Hi Folk, Just wondering if the bike or run course has any big bridges or are they relatively flat. Thanks

flat - definitely flat.  there's one small bridges over the canal but only for the run
the main concern is the cobblestones during the bike, around Vinoy Park area.
The race is contained within the DT St Pete area and mostly asphalt - city usually has the roads cleaned and well swept.

G'luck!

Here's a link to the course map
http://www.satriathlon.com/images/2006-course-map.pdf

Now, I am wondering why aren't there any race official tri-jerseys for sale on the website. ???

I am still noncommittal. Leaning towards yes. Definitely want to do the swim (sans wetsuit) in preparation for the Hurricane Man OWS.

I had to defer to next year.  The knee just did not heal as quickly as I had hoped.  But I'll be there cheering on my wife and dad plus all the other BTers.

I've finally decided not to have anything to do with St A's. It's not going to get me closer to my running goals, cycling will take time away from my other training. My immediate goal is to get ready for the Hurricane Man OWS; I need to stay FOCUSED on that!

Swim Waves are posted. They've mixed things up a bit from years past; Women under 40 now starting about an hour earlier than usual.

Will you at least be there for the practice swim, or on race day with a cowbell?

Well thats a slight improvement.  Best wave I have had in 6 years.  I'll take it.  I DID bend the ear of the president of St. A about this..........................

Well, this would have been the year to do St. A's!  I am boycotting the race for life since the RD consistently refused to put women anywhere but last AND because of his lousy decision to "cancel" the swim last year (cancel in quotes because the pros were allowed to swim).

But if I was racing this year, I'd be going off by about 7:30 which is CRAZY early for chicks at this race!  I'm happy for all the women this year!  I'm cheering for you from Iraq!

259 in my age group, 131 in my swim wave.

ETA:The pro field looks decent this year. I was worried that with the 70.3 US Pro Championship (Lonestar) going on the same day, they would be in trouble. But Craig Alexander, Greg & Laura Bennett, Matty Reed, Julie Dibens, Sara Mclary, and the Wassners have all chosen St. A's.

Great.  I aged up this year, so I start at 8:34.  148 in my swim wave.  So basically some of the Pro men will be crossing the finish line before I even start swimming.  The older I get, the slower I get and the later I start.  I've either got to get younger or faster, LOL.

What's this practice swim someone mentioned?  Is it something official that the race holds?  Or a BT practice swim?

1. Thanks for watching out for us from abroad.
2. Now that the women start times are spread will you be doing 2011 (if back in US soil)?
3. Swim cancellations always leave a mild crappy taste, especially on a race of this caliber (and cost), there's never a good call .  But it just takes one lousy swimmer (hey, could be any of us) to make it a horrible day for the rest.  I wasn't there but I feel your pain as much as the RD's.
4. Tell everyone out there we're praying and waiting for your safe return.
