so how much of this can be reacquired for lack of a better word.??    I'm coming off a good 6 month lay off will it take the same amount of time to improve as before?

My experience has always been that coming back is much faster than initial building. I won't quite numbers, but it won't take you 6 months to get back where you once were.

My theory on that is that you have the underlying structure in place, you just need to get the enzyme systems, etc. back up to par.

All of it. The changes due to exercise come and go depending on if you're exercising or not. So you can become detrained and work hard and become trained again and get all of the physiological changes back again.

The structures change back to the way they were when you were not training, but the 6 mo. lay off may not be enough time for them to change all the way back to where you started. This is most likely why it's easier to get back into it than it was to being from scratch. Changes at the muscle level due to exercise follow the same pattern of slowly changing (enzymes, # of mitocondria etc...)
