Subject: 2006 Tampa Bay Marathon...who's up for it?
OK here's the plan. I have decided to take some vacation time and run in the Gasparilla Marathon in Tampa Florida on February 26th next year. Renee has graciously agreed to join me in this event, and it will be her very first marathon. She's probably both excited and scared, thinking "What have I gotten myself into...I'm not a runner?" but nevermind the details. We can take care of that. We all have to start somewhere, and the goal is to get both her and myself through this AND enjoy the experience. Along the way, we're going to make her feel good about herself, her body, and her ability to perservere and tackle a project that she probably thought at one time was way beyond her reach.

With the help of Hal Higdon's marathon plan for beginners, I'd like to set up a weekly training schedule, revolved around peaking at just the right time so we both will arrive at the start line, ready to DO IT!

So my request here is.....anyone else interested in this as a long-term goal? Specifically anyone else willing to make the commitment to also run in the Tampa Marathon? Let's get "Team BT" together, meet up in Florida in February, and run this!

So far, the marathon web site is a bit under construction, but they do have a home page at

http://www.tampabayrun.com/

and it does give you the ability to sign up early. Once we get people on board, I'd like to encourage those that are willing to do this to send in the entry fee...nothing like putting your money where your legs and ambition are, and it will provide addtional motivation for doing this together.

Let's get a Team together. I'm willing to set up the training plan that will be do-able for anyone. Whether it's your first or 10th marathon, you'll have other virtual partners to train with and report back to. That should provide additional inspiration. In addition, for everyone who is willing to come on board, pay the race entry fee, and do this together, I'll foot the bill for our pre-race dinner the night before for the "Team BT" runners.

You don't have to decide today...but I'd like to start the program with a warm-up by August 1st, and get into a regular weekly schedule no later than September 1st. That'll give us over 20 weeks towards building you up to the distance. We'll start slow...there won't be any daily 10 mile runs to discourage people who have never done this before. So let's get together and I'll get an email list going for those who want to run with us!

Hmm, tough choice, Disney or Tampa? I'm trying to decide what to do after Marine Corps.

PT, I've done both, and honestly I think Tampa is a better race. Nice run along the waterfront, not too big, but big enough for a great party. Weather has been a bit more predictable, too. If you're after a PR or BQ Tampa is better for that.

Right now I've committed to the Disney half, but I haven't ruled out a Tampa race yet.

And, I'll let BTers crash at my house. One guest bed has already been committed. We can make it as crowded as you want.

Uhhhh, no. This isn't the Gasparilla Sexcapades; it's a Marathon race/party/blowout. The Shackarama is aaaaaaaallllllllll yours.

BTW, I'm a fantastic cook and I love to entertain and feed friends. The more, the merrier!

Ummm...yeah, I'm married and plan to stay happily so....I'll pass on the "shacking up stuff". Be glad to help out on the BBQ details too if needed. That would be great fun too...my wife would love to come and be a part of it all.

And I would love for your wife to be there, Max. Sorry this thread took a sordid turn; certainly not my intention.

I will attend to all bbq details! Maybe we could have it on the beach! It's convenient to South Tampa (where race is held, etc).

Ya know... I'm thinking that a chartered sailboat might be groovy too...

OH not a problem Renee....she's so excited to be going to see her sister! We'll probably drive up from the Naples area and work out the details from there. I think we're going down mid-week, maybe on Wednesday and staying until the following Wed. I might even ship my bike down UPS if we decide to stay long enough.

I will probably just do the half again. Not sure, though. I haven't picked a training plan for IMAZ yet so once I do that I will know whether a marathon or 1/2 is in the cards.

ahhh!!!  It's still raining here, worse now.  I'm in another state at mom's house.  We are going swimming later (indoor pool) and I have no goggles/cap.  But I did get a new swimsuit before we left.....    Shopping!

Well anyays I think I can go up for the half.  I can do 13 I think!  Longest run to date was a 10K.  Max, is this training plan gonna interfere with our tri training, since there isn't really an off season here?

I'm in...my folks live in Dunedin, Fl.  We could do the post BBQ party over there.  I've heard the Gasparilla race is awesome.  That area of town is beautiful, down along the water.

Looking forward to seeing you guys (and gals) in February.

Cool! Maybe we can get the Neaser-Bostic clan down here and they could stay at my house. No problem finding a gallon of milk and cereal for the kids! My house is within walking distance to Bayshore; very easy to get around. (It's my insomniac running route now.)

Absolutely not! I figure it's normally an 18 week program to get the base to run a marathon, so why not spread it out a bit and still allow for swim and bike training. You don't run as often as the original plan dictates, but the cross training from the other sports makes up for it a bit. Plus it gives a longer time to work up the distances needed on the run. We'll play things by ear and see how it goes. There's plenty of opportunity to assess the training and make adjustments as needed.

Hey, with a 10-K under your belt, you can do the marathon! Like I said to Renee.....DREAM BIG!

I wish I could commit to a race this far in advance! Sounds fun.  I am now trying to get organized enough to do the Kiawah Island mary in Dec04 w/my sister. I will keep an eye on this thread just in case those plans fall through.
